I am assuming he has some sort of special mental state, a savant or some form of autism. I grew up homeschooling, and while I met tons of people who had zzzeeerrrooo social skill, I don't think he's just socially inept. I will say though, it's awesome to see that reporter squirm. Not too often a total no-name un-glues a host.

While I am against homeschooling because it stunts a child social skils, I think this was just more of a case of a young kid being out of his element. Spelling bees and competition of the sort, he is used to, but being on national T.V and knowing you have millions watching you? That would make most of us nervous. Grats on the win kid

I think this kid is just a little nervous to be on national tv, and is trying to be a little funny or witty with his answers. I assume all of you who are criticizing him would be perfectly smooth and full of funny jokes if you were getting interviewed on national tv? (although I admit he could have given more than one-word answers...)

By the way, thats some real class calling some middle-schooler a douchebag...

Not bad for his age and his experience.

How could he be expected to spell the word when the TV face could not even pronounce it correctly.

I am appalled at most of these comments! This has zip to do w/ homeschooling! Also - these commenting morons apparently know zip about the spelling bee! Every entrant always inquires about the language of origin - and for this lady to not be able to give it - and, particularly, not even be sure of her own pronunciation - and to put this child on the spot like this is unbelievable. Additionally, this child wasn't trying to be cute - nor was he nervous. He behaved precisely the way he did when interviewed immediately after winning the competition. He obviously has some sort of special need (probably some form of high-functioning autism) - as well as some special strengths. I know it makes lots of idiots feel good to slam someone else - but a child? Y'ALL have many more special needs than this kid!

This child obviosly has a social skills disorder. He may have autism or aspergers syndrome which would technically qualify him as handicapped. For all of you who think public school would cure this, you are wrong. These students often become home schooled because of abuse and misunderstandings from peers and uneducated adults. Being around "regular" kids does not make things better. These kind of kids need special social skills classes. They do not see their action the same as you or I. I am thrilled that this child has exceled in an area that interests him. Would we criticize another handicapped person this way?

The kid is obviously a genius and geniuses are, by definition, not normal. Homeschooling did not make him into who he is. Those who attribute his mannerisms to his educational training obviously do not understand pedagogy. If the reporter interviewed other kids from the spelling bee, many would have probably appeared nerdy, and most of them are not homeschooled.

Give the kid a break--he will learn the necessary social graces as he ages; apparently many of the previous posters have yet to learn them too.

Also, great job for staying cool, Sibila Vargas!

I have to agree with some of the posters, this boy probably has Asperger's Syndrome. I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was 15, so I can really relate to him. Many of us have sort of an all or nothing attitude, which helps explain why he was not satisfied with spelling the word only partially correctly. I also thought that her pronunciation of the word made its spelling a bit ambiguous. I think he did pretty well for being on national television.

I think it's a sad, sad world when so many people bash other people and pick them apart. We are all different... with different talents and different challenges. What makes any of us feel superior to anyone else? We should instead be looking for the beauty and good in one another, rather than bashing other people to make ourselves feel better. It's amazing to me that there are so many people out there who are just plain mean. To me, that makes YOU "socially retarded".....

yes he definitely fits the asperger's profile. Do your homework, networks! the anchor needed to know the child might respond in an inappropriate manner. a five minute pre-interview would have told everything. She needed to follow the regular spelling bee format and provide the language of origin information and use it in a sentence, plus audio over face to face can be very difficult if you have any auditory processing difficulties( common with asperger's).

Hmmm, it must be the homeschooling. Public schools never turns out socially inept people like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and so on. Perhaps he's just a shy and introverted kid who wasn't ripped down by a public school system and the bullies it harbors and, so, went on to win a spelling bee instead of enacting another Columbine.

I mean come on, that's not even a trick word like opossum or aardvark. Not to mention he's a mean little boy that has an inferiority complex. He has to justify everything so he doesn't feel small.

If the posts condemning or downing home schooling were not filled with so much misinformation they might be funny. Having known many homeschooled kids, and families that contained both homeschooled and public school children, as has been stated, homeschooling is not the issue. The supposed lack of social skills seems to be the typical cliche given in opposition of home schooling. Anybody that was public schooled, like myself, can attest to the fact that there are certainly some, even numerous children that attend public school who are "wierd" or inexperienced and socially challenged. Almost every public school has some children like this young man. Is that public schools fault. According to the rational of some on here it has to be so! Or does that only apply to public school? If so, why? As for social interaction, look up some of the many homeschool groups and the activities they have. Homeschoolers can and do participate in band, sports, choir, drama groups, and even spelling bees. And as this young man proved, they can do as well and even better in some cases than public schooled children. Generally children act like their parents or guardians. If those parents/guardians are wierd, and unsociable, there is a chance, (a good chance i believe) the kids will follow suit, whether public or homeschooled. Before spouting off about homeschooling or public schooling, do your homework. Calling a kid names is immature, regardless of where you received your education. I'm sure this kid's vocabulary would allow him to call most of us names we have never heard of, could not spell, and have no idea of the origin! However, I suspect he has more maturity than to stoop to that level! Just my take!

I agree with karenkeyjohnson. There's nothing wrong with this kids attitude, he is most likely Autisitic or, more probably, has Aspergers syndrome. This basically means that all forms of social etiquette mean nothing to him and he's just getting on with it. So well done to all those who called him a moron. I think that says more about you than it does him. P.S. If you're going to abuse a child who won a spelling bee, check you're own spelling first.

Evan does not have a major attitude. He is clearly on the autism spectrum. Interviews such as this are undoubtly difficult for him.

You people are all rude and ignorant.

He's not a classic nerd. He's very literal, probably has some processing issues and is very uncomfortable in the situation he's been put in.

He was probably homeschooled because of his disabilities and is not socially inept because of homeschooling.

This is the main reason for not to have home schooling, especially if it puts little snot-nosed future anti-American spies for the Russians(could you tell me the origin of the word while my friend whispers the right spelling in my hidden microphone that's attatched to my ear)on so-called established news programs such as CNN. Not only did it show the true personality of "dear little Evan", it also shows why we need news anchors that not only can spell words, but also speak the language outside the newsroom.

This kid is totally composed. This woman is obnoxious. Why shouldn't he correct the anchor. who mispronounces his name? She seems totally fake and he seems totally sincere. He is truthful, capable, living in the exact moment. She tries to put him down by saying he didn't get a chance to eat his brain food. How nasty. He totally asked the correct questions about the word's origin. He's not even in the same studio as she is an is having a totally hard time understanding what she is saying. He seems like a really nice kid. I don't believe in home schooling for the same social reasons everyone is referring to, but what's wrong with you critics of the kid. He's a great , likable kid and I bet he has friends. He's just very very smart. there is nothing wrong with that. He's have to skip several grades if he were in public school anyway. Don't be threatened, be interested.

No but really, this 3-and-a-half minute clip needs to be turned into a full-length movie. INCREDIBLE! And our true heart goes out to the anchor who tries to be as polite as possible in the face of sheer insanity. I would have been like "Eff off, spell that, son!" (less)
