Simon's reaction was clearly made about Chris's attempt to deflect the criticism he had just made on his singing, not about the Virginia Tech statement. Sadly the camera appears to show otherwise, but this is not the case. Simin himself offered condolences regarding the Virginia Tech incident toward the end of the show, cut him a break, this has been hard for all of us in USA.

Give me a break !! He was not rolling his eyes in disrespect to Virginia Tech. He did it because Chris was deflecting his criticisms by changing the subject. Simon even spoke up in support of Virginia Tech at the end of the show.

oh, give me a break. just because someone is non-American doesn't make them insensitive. isn't that a stereotype?
chris was just taking attention off his bad performance, and that aggravated simon (which is why he rolled his eyes). after all, look how chris cuts the critique short by sending the condolences...quite awkward.

More often than not, people want to express this so they can become PART of the saga....part of the "news." There are actually less than admirable motives behind most of this, and Simon naturally is cynical about it like me.

Cowell's reaction was in part due to the interaction between Chris and then thinking that Richardson was pulling at the heartstrings of the American people to help himself get votes, which I don't think was the intention. It's just an unfortunate camera shot of Simon. To be honest, Simon is the most truthful judge of them all. A true judge is not trying to win popularity points with what he says. Although I don't agree with all that he says, his criicism is the most constructive of all 3. Sometimes ... the truth hurts!

Fire Simon?? Give me a break!!! I don't think Simon was rolling his eyes at Virginia Tech, but at Chris trying to take advantage by using VT.
But even if he was, its ridiculous to demand we fire everyone who has a moment of insensitivity. Condemn their actions, be vocal in opposition, but firing people doesn't solve anything and only causes people to be more insincere.

I was watching and kind of had the same reaction as Cowell.
It seemed very coy, the way Chris made reference to the students, while in the midst of Simon's critique. It was an inappropriate time, and totally self-serving.
You could see it on Chris's face, he knew it. To say after that he was shocked is show politics. To hear about this on Drudge just makes me dislike Chris, and I did not care one way or the other til this point.
I found it unfortunate in this overly routine/planned age in which live in, that none of the contestants decided to throw away their song choice, go out on a limb, and choose a song that could have addressed the tragedy.
What role do songs and singers have in our culture that they chose instead to stay with their self-serving song choices instead? Very little of worth in this age, think you'll agree. I know, they could blow their career options, right? Not really, others have chosen substance over career in this competition, and all involved will be on tour this summer.
Lack of character development in today's kiddies.
Simon rules.

Come on. Give me a break. Simon was rolling his eyes at the excuses given by someone who had just turned in a bad performance and sang off key. As a former TV producer, let me tell you timing is everything. The director had the shot lined up and went for it and happened to simultaneoulsy get Simon reacting to the excuses Chris was giving out. He was nasally, and he was off key. The cynicism was a reaction to the excuses, not to Virginia Tech. I can't believe how people make something out of nothing.

this show is such a waste of time but americans are lulled into complacency by it while rome burns and the barbarians storm the gates.

CHRIS IS AT FAULT HERE, not Simon. Can the Chrissy baby, he was using a terrible situation to hopefully play on the emotions of us all and get votes, I saw this and thought this right away last night, when he did it! This has been a terrible season of American Idol, really nasty, now it just got worse. Sanjaya throws his sicko hair in our faces each week, now Chris tries to play on our sympathies! Can them All!

I was watching this when aired and said "ooh he's gonna catch flak for rolling his eyes!" During the commercial my wife and I agreed they would probably have Simon say something about VT once the folks in the control room saw the eye roll--and we were right!
We also noted that Chris's comment was ill-timed since it looked like he was deflecting the criticism.

Any person saying that Chris was doing this to just "get the sympathy of the American people" or to "deflect the criticism and take the attention off of his bad performance" is just plain wrong. I went to high school and graduated with Chris. He is honestly one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Yes, this may not have been his best performance, but it is true that he has a good number of friends that go to the school and it was probably hard to have a happy-go-lucky, high energy performance while he was probably in the dark with the details of the situation (not knowing who had died/been injured). I am proud of him for using the limitied amount of post-song time he has to make a comment in front of millions not about himself, but about his friends and former classmates at Virginia Tech. Also, Simon did comment on the students and faculty at Virginia Tech, but not until after Chris did it and after the commercial break, in which he said "I would like to touch on what Ryan said and send out sympathies to Virginia Tech" or something to that matter. More than likely a producer told him of his untimely rolling of the eyes on camera and told him to make a comment so that he didn't look like the insensitive prick he is. The least he could do was say it was Chris that said it and not Ryan. I almost always agree with his critiques of the singers, but I am going to be a judge now, a judge of his character and go out on a limb and say he is an insensitive, egotistical, pompous prick.
Some things are more important than a singing contest.

The tragedy that occured at VT is truly disturbing to everyone. To even suggest that someone would react in disgust to a comment about those events is incredible. Watch the video, Chris never even pauses between his rebuttal to Simon¿s comments and his condolences to victims¿ families and his friends. You really don¿t know what he¿s saying until he¿s finished talking. Simon was clearly reacting to the rebuttal to his comments and probably didn¿t understand what Chris was saying at the time. Sure, Simon cab be a jerk sometimes on Idol when judging the contestants but that¿s just good TV. Come on folks, you can¿t really believe the Simon, or anyone for that matter, would show contempt for the events at VT.

OK, first, I agree with the people who think that Simon's reaction was not to VT, but to the guy "using" the VT incident to take away from the criticism he received. Very poor timing on the contestant's part.
Secondly, what happened to free speech in America? EVEN if Simon is an insensitive bastard who rolled his eyes at the mention of VT, SO WHAT? He has a right to his opinion.
People really need to learn to think critically about stuff instead of jumping to conclusions. Just cause Simon is an arse (and I think he is), I have a lot of respect for him, and his brutal honesty, which some of the folks who show up at American Idol obviously need to hear.

Here's the straight scoop:
1.) Chris is from Virginia and has been distraught since news of the tragedy broke. He had several friends on the campus of Virginia Tech at the time of the shootings.
2.) Simon did not intend disrespect toward the vicitms and their families with his eye roll. However, the official AI line is not true, he did not, "not hear it" and was NOT reacting to Paula. As some have speculated, Simon was cynical of the timing of Chris' remarks and viewed them as a ploy to connect with viewers and distract from the criticism.
3.) Contrary to the official line coming out of AI, the "plan all along" was NOT to have Simon address the matter on behalf of the judges at the end of the show. This was a real-time, ill-conceived attempt at damage control after alert producers caught Simon's reaction. (Their instincts to address the matter were spot on, but they blew it. They should have had Simon say something along the lines of, "I want to clarify my reaction to Chris' comments about the tragedy at Virginia Tech, we all agree wtih Chris' sentiments, we all feel horribly for the families and friends of the victims, so let me be clear, my eye roll was for the unseemly timing of the comments which appeared to be a ploy to distract from our criticism in the same way that I am cynical about other contestants comments about loving puppies or sending birthday wishes to grandparents and the like..."
The official AI story is foolish and not credible. They would have been much better off to just tell the truth and be honest about what Simon meant. America would understand that and the matter would be closed.
This hokey explanation is pathetic. Perhaps they'd buy it across the pond, but it's not going to fly here.

If simon were just rolling his eyes at the blow off why didnt he state that at the time instead of waiting till the end of the show!? But if the show didnt have Simon they would get someone just like him to take his place. Ratings etc.
