    This kind of reminds me of high school wrestling....skins against the shirts....but we didn't have a female referee.....and we were not allowed to take tools out of shop class......

    Norman was notorious for fighting with practically everyone he met - really. I have no doubt that this is real - this story made the rounds many years ago. You can see that both he and Rip Torn were pretty young back then - they are at least in their 70's now.

    What the hell is wrong with you people. Rip Torn hits Norman Mailer in the head with a hammer and then tries to choke him to death, and you people act as though it's just a couple of punk kids getting in a fight. This was attempted murder. What I can't figure out is why the camera man continued to film and not try to stop the fight or at least yell for help. Unbelievable!!

    It was a rather civilized fight until the foul mouthed woman got into it screeming, you Mother ------, you SOB, get the ---- off etc. etc.

    HELLO setta20 and others...Rip Torn DID NOT hit Mailer with hammer...Norman Mailer is the one with the hammer and the "Psycho"...doesn't anybody know who Rip Torn is? he is the one getting attacked & the "foul mouthed woman" is his wife Newsman2001 ! Her husband has bloody head and their children are screaming, in that situation i would have been more proactive than she was...NORMAN MAILER is one fucked up dude...even tho Rip has been in many many movies, do you folks at least not recognize Rip from "Men in Black"?

    "Yeah baby", shows you what a messed up bunch of freaks the Hollywood Idols (MAILER)are, Rip should have RIPped and TORN Mailer to shreds and not stopped till he was in the hospital or morg, because I dont care who he is he attacked someone with a hammer and as was said above it was clearly attempted murder(with or without intent vis/vis insanity) and no jury on the planet would convict...especially with film evidence....Mailers obviously a wacked out freak, I dont even know if hes dead or alive right now, but I do know he is lionised by many in that alien culture called holly wood.After seeing this there is not one benifical or profitable thing that P>O>S could have possibly done to further human progress...if hes dead im sure hes getting his now..

    Controversial, celebrated post-WWII American writer Norman Mailer first gained recognition at age 25 for his scathing anti-war novel, "The Naked and the Dead" (1948). Mailer directed three "underground" features in the late 1960s--during one of which he and actor Rip Torn argued so violently that Torn attacked him with a hammer--and has made appearances in works by avant-garde directors such as Kenneth Anger and Jonas Mekas. Several of Mailer's novels have been made into feature films, one of which--the forgettable, noirish Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987)--he also directed. Son Michael Mailer is a film producer and daughter Kate Mailer is an actress.

    Rip Torn is the one with the hammer, not Mailer. Not only does the description of the video say it, but if you listen carefully at the end you will hear Torn (the one in the green shirt) saying "You know I had to do that Norman, I really did". I think the person who thought that Mailer was the one with the hammer was confused because the video was shot 35 years ago. Norman Mailer is about 10 years older than Torn and the one with the hammer is clearly the younger one,

    During the 1970 film "Maidstone", Torn got into an improvised fight with the director and star of the film Norman Mailer. As the camera rolled, Torn struck Mailer in the head with a hammer, intending to "kill his character." Mailer's scalp opened up, and a vicious fight ensued. With the camera still rolling, Torn energetically strangled Mailer until the fight was broken up by Mailer's wife Barbara and Mailer's wailing children. During the melee, Mailer bit off a small chunk of Rip Torn's ear. The fight, in which the actors called each other by their real names, made it into the film, and the segment has proven very popular on the Internet in recent years.

    Jeez, Mailer had a rep for pissing people off and fighting, as I'm sure most of you know. I love Rip Torn - he is still one of the acting gods. Somehow I'm sure Mailier asked for it, though you have to love and respect him too. Mailer just passed away.
