I remember watching Mars Attacks. Probably the weirdest movie I`ve ever seen, but it was very entertaining!
BTW: are you shittin me? ANOTHER The Thing MOVIE IS BEING MADE?? wtf?!! I mean, the second one was good enough, not horrible or awesome but still good.
I really agree with you, is it REALLY necessary to make a third one? I hope they cancel it or something.
Can`t wait for the next reviews!

Good I needed to hear someone address the remake of Day the earth stood still. Good to see keanu at least was decent in the role although I still won't be running to the theater to see this. Maybe as a rental.

How has no one realized yet that KLAATU BARADA NIKTU was on Army of Darkness? It's one of the funniest scenes in the movie when Ash says "Klaatu... barata.... *cough*cough*blahbalbah".
I'm surprised James didn't mention it.

I'm surprised that you pointed out the original source material for The Thing but failed to do so with Mars Attacks (the 60's trading cards) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (loosely based on Harry Bates's, "Farewell to the The Master")
I for one don't know how anyone could prefer the Hawks version of the Thing over Carpenter's. Don't get me wrong Hawks version is a classic but I think you let the SFX really cloud your judgment with Carpenter's version. You didn't even mention that those SFX are completely ground breaking for the time and were done by the legendary Rob Bottin with Stan Winston doing the dog sequence. The performances in this movie are gritty and realistic and the interplay between the characters is believable. Than you also have Ennio Morricone's haunting score. It should also be noted that legendary matte artist Albert Whitlock worked on this film as well.
I don't know people defend ID4. Sure I guess it's just a typical blockbuster if you expect a typical blockbuster to be so poorly written as to insult your intelligence.

this is great!looking forward to the gift of two more reviews!i always found the gross out factor of carpenter's 'the thing' a bit too much for me, but never read the original story to know if the aliens transformation was more subtle than this. my 13 year old son was excited to tell me he saw a bit of the original "day the earth stood still' at his brothers house and thought it looked really cool. i think its great that he is open to older movies even though cgi etc are the norm for him...we encourage accepting classics and new alike, though. lastly, that is neat about the harryhousen space ships. gotta love that mans work, as well as stan winston!

this is just my opinion of "ID4": first, it wasn't just america, though the film focused on OUR response, it was about the independence of the world. second, yes. one drunken idiot pilot taking out an alien space ship IS far fetched to the point that a vegas odds maker stood to become rich, but history is riddled with stories of the unthinkable happening, against all odds, yadayada. it is mostly jjust a summer blockbuster blowing stuff up, and rag tag survivors making the final cut (the dog in the tunnel?that stripper actually finding the first lady?many odds beating moments i guess.) i still like it for what it is, and get my mind candy elsewhere.

You have a totally good point James. I agree with you. Why bother making remakes when the originals are considered good.

Why is everybody so down on remakes? Some of the greatest films in history are remakes:
The Wizard of Oz
The Maltese Falcon
The Magnificent Seven
Just to name a few.

Why not add Invasion of the Body Snatchers too, since it's an alien invasion movie, and it's been remade three times!!

Cinnemassacre, I'll be pissed if you DON'T do "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers". Those films fit your criteria perfectly!!
"Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" has not been remade just once, but fricken 3 times!
I hope it's on Pt 3.

I've always felt that you're much better at being an historian than anything, and I think that's what I love most about your videos -- from the AVGN installments to these lovely gems. I get to learn some neat things I hadn't known before.
I'm really looking forward to Part II, as I've been a huge fan of "The War of the Worlds" ever since I was introduced to the 1953 classic back in 6th grade (some thirteen years ago).
I know that many have mentioned some things they were surprised to see missing from this video, and I just had one comment to add. While Independence Day was, no doubt, influenced heavily by "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers," it also took some significant things from "The War of the Worlds, as well. (SPOILERS?) I mean, seriously, the whole giving the aliens "a cold?" It was completely stolen from H.G. Wells and the aliens having no immunity to the common cold.
That is all. Keep up the good work.

Ah. Man. James. You are the Nostalgia king. I can't wait to watch your reviews of these films. I loved the Carpenter version of The Thing. One of the best scenes in movie history.
The Thing: GRAAAAAAAAAAAAR!
MacReady: Yeah! F*** you too!

I usually enjoy your work, but I have to call you on a comparison you made.
"Independence Day (1996)" is, in my opinion, a remake of "War of the Worlds (1953)", rather than "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers (1956)".
The ships attack major cities systemtically, are impervious to nuclear bombs, and ar taken out with a virus.
I could be describing either "Independence Day (1996)" or "War of the Worlds (1953)."
Keep up the good work.

Wow, never have I seen John Carpenter's The Thing, I remember seeing it for rentals of Beta and VHS back in the day on videostores but never did I think it was this cool. Im sorry but its gorey I love gorey flms hell thats what also got me into anime in the first place (referring of course to the old 80's sci-fi animes that actually had good animation and gorey scenes unlike today)
Im gonna look for that one, I really dont recall seeing it except for the movie cover.

Wait a minute! I've seen the Thing remake, but this is the first time I noticed one thing. The Thing remake takes place in Antarctica... with American and NORWEGIAN scientists? What are those Norwegians doing in Antarctica?! What the hell? I know Norwegians got money, but why would they send scientists all the way to Antarctica? But then again, people do crazy things.
