Good for Mitt Romney. I thought he handled that well. It's ridiculous that still after all this time people are judged by race, religion, and gender.

It's ironic that in one statement he was able to be tolerant and bigoted at the same time: tolerant of religious people, but bigoted against the non-religious. He apparently isn't aware of the "no religious test" clause of the Constitution.

you cant believe how strange this sound to Europeans, surly a persons religious faith, or lack of it is a matter personal to them? The only country in the western world that executes its own citizens, the U.S, expects its politicians to publicly declare a belief in god?? Why??

Wow, Jackdaniels. You seem to have it all figured out. Except small things like how to spell "soulless"
You remind me of a the stereotypical hicks at the local bar in some small town. You know, the ones with 2 teeth that come up to the person from the city that is passing through and says "We don't like your kind round these here parts" It doesn't matter what part of the world you're from, you're entitled to have an opinion. We as American's have opinions about most everything throughout the world, and spout off frequently about them.
On the whole subject of Mr. Romney... I have no problem with him having faith, or even believing that a person in charge should have faith, but I feel strategically to have any chance he better lay off of the "my religion is the only right religion" rhetoric. Even though most religions believe that.

You should be executed if you take someone's life, for a country that had it's constitution based with the belief in god, it makes sense since the Bible teaches that. Also, why would it make someone a hick just because they misspelled a word or just typed a word wrong? Not that I'm saying there is something wrong with hicks. The great thing about America is its diversity, and also the enabling ability, that we can take advantage of or not, to be tolerant of any ethnic and religious background that someone might have. I'm just glad I don't have to be in Mr. Romney's shoes and handle the ignorance that people can publicly demonstrate. I do agree that it is rather unethical to have to explain your religious background to be able to run for political office. He is Christian.... what else does he need to say?

Jackdaniels63, I'd consider myself a very "decent American" and I do have a problem with the death penalty. Not because I think someone who (for example) murders children shouldn't be done away with, but because our system is woefully flawed.
We've good reason to believe many innocent people have been executed throughout American history. We know money buys "justice" in America. The rich and the poor seldom pay the same price for equal crimes.
Your snap judgments are asinine. You don't speak for the "decent" people of America.
Benbg makes a valid observation. The reason: religious zealots are a powerful force in America. It's unfortunate to say the least. The "decent" people of this country are doing everything we can to subdue these dimwitted. totalitarian, "god" pushers. But it's an up hill battle. Not because they make up a significant percentage of the populous, but because collectively, they are richer than God.

I happen to be a particular fan Of Jack Daniels, so its very disappointing that it's "namesake" concept of decency , is tied up with death and minding ones own business!!!The fact remains, that alomg with Saudi Arabia and China( well known bastions of democrcey and religious freedom!!!)you execute your on citizens. No other state in the western world does this. Why?

Well it really doesn¿t matter I think you should be free to state your religion, and leave at that any of that pushing your religion, or the my god is better than yours are just wrong. I personally think the Mormons are a very racial they believe that African Americans are the decedents of Cain a man cursed by god with a mark, and used this as a excuse to exclude the African Americans out of your church for many years. Not to mention the multiple wives thing and all the scandal of 14 year old brides in Utah. So if I had my choice a Mormon would not be elected as for the death penalty yes I support it fully and it does make mistakes but if you were not there is no way to know for certain. As for typo¿s I have English teacher who has been teaching for 20 years and he makes typo¿s so one mistake dosn¿t make you a hick. And I believe that only people with weak arguments use spelling or punctuation to attack the other person argument bottom line if you understand what they were trying to say then leave the spell check for correction English papers. Also Hillary Clinton will win like it or not.

WOW! mrgrim257 you are an amazing example of ignorance. Your statement that Mormons are racist is a complete farce. I am confident that the hundreds of thousands of African American, and countless other ethnicities that belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints would strongly dissagree with you.
Also, to state that, the religion that Mitt Romney belongs to practices polygamy shows just how ignorant you really are. The LDS church has not practiced polygamy for over 100 years. There are a small number of people who belong to splinter groups, who fell away from the main stream church which do still practice that doctrine, but they are not associated with the LDS church in any way.
I am certain that you will have some witty comments to try to set me straight, but until you have actually gained some level of understanding about the matter which you wish to discuss, please hold you tongue and use your time to enlighten you own mind, before you try to enlighten others.
As far as Mitt Romney for President goes, I am a Mormon, and I don't know yet if I'll vote for him or not. You see, as an informed American, I will vote on the person whom I feel will do the best jot at leading out country based on his policies and ability to govern, not on his religion, though obviously, being of the same religion would pre-dispose me to agreeing with his point of view on many things.
Don't make judgements on people that you don't actually know anything about. You obviously don't know much about Mormonism. I would suggest that you study up on it from people who actually practice it, and see what you can learn. You don't go to Catholic school to learn how to be a Baptist, So you shouldn't go to your minister to learn about what Mormons believe.
www.lds.org will teach you what you need to know.

Good for you Stuarthenry, i am also mormon but that doesn't mean i'll neccasarely vote for Mitt Romney, i'll review the issues and vote for who i think would be the best president. I'm not going to fool myself into thinking that him being mormon isn't going to make me more inclined to vote for him. Religion matters to voters and it alawys will, Yes Church shouldn't be combined with state but people don't change who they are when they walk into a goverment building. Also, confusing Mormons and the splinter groups that practice polagamy is like confusing a sunni with a shitte you need to learn your facts before you make comments like that. That would be like me saying that the Catholic Church burns witches at the stake(not true). Calling mormons racist is a horrible thing to say and you should really think about what you say before you say it. If you generalize people in religions and groups your forget that there individuals and differ, you need to learn that. If your going to say that you why don't you say that muslims are terroists (not true) or that mexicans are lazy(also not true). Take the time and learn about what you say. sorry for the typos and bad grammer and the examples of stuff that's wrong but if you ignore ugly predijuice it just makes the matter worse.

I agree with eegah here. Also, Mormonism has been disproven by genetics and linguistics. They supposedly had a battle where 2 million people died but the original population of lost jews could not have produced quickly enough to lose that many people. Also, most religions are pretty silly but a religion with secret handshakes and sacred underwear started by a guy with a police record is hard to accept for many religious and atheists. I'm afraid Mitt will have to wait to rule the next planet he inhabits that may be next to Kolob where God now supposedly lives with his wife. Joseph Smith wanted to be president too. (google "kinderhook plates" and "lost scrolls or abraham" for more on how retarded this religion really is.)

What is it, exactly, that you were told you need salvation from?
Your creator made you defective? Now you must believe man-made doctrines in order to fix yourself for Him by accepting Him? LUNACY!!!! WAKE UP!!!!
Remeber this, voters: Jesus was not a Christian. He also said that the kingdom is HERE AND NOW, and if you seek it, LOOK WITHIN. Not within a church, and not within any particular religion. Go outside, take in the air, exhale and know you are alive and free.
WAKE UP. You don't need organized religion, and you shouldn't trust politicians who attempt to woo you by claiming to believe in the same mythologies you've been duped into believing.
What you need is to KNOW YOUR CONSTITUTION, and know when your rights are being ripped away from you. If you know the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, then you'll know who to vote for -- you'll know by removing those candidates who speak of everything BUT the Constitution. Without the protection of those privileges, America is nothing but dirt.
WAKE UP!!! And Google "WTC 7" while you're at it.
