I really like the song, very creative and stirring. After I saw the video I was terribley disappointed. The first comment was accurate. It's creapy, and brings out thoughts of sacreligion. Then I learn the song was about losing a gay lover. Assuming this is correct, that makes this song even more distancing. I realize we live in a pluralistic society where all people should be respected, but this should not mean that everyone should be forced to put their stamp of approval on individual choices. I think the song was best for me when it was vague, filling in the blanks of what I thought the song meant. Sorry I dug into this. Now it has ruined the song for me.

I worked on this video and talked with Michael about the song. It's true, the song's about loss of love, NOT about loss of religion or faith. 'Losing My Religion' is a Southern phrase that means something like 'losing it' or 'going crazy'.
BTW the world's in bad shape...please let's learn to respect those different from ourselves.

Dude,
We have to appreciate the artistic talent regardless of sexual orientation. If not, then we would have to discard all the work of may famous artists. This song is an anthem to those who have seen the darkness of a cruel world.

This song was an anthem for college students due to its melancholic tune and the wandering questions of how we can lose our faith in so many things. It is obvious that the listener needs to appreciate its monotonous melody because it reflects the expression of despair in the voice of Michael Stipes. To me this song was able to connect with its audience in a way that very few songs have. If not we, would not be compelled to write these lines about it.

Well done video. Excellent band. I think many people feel like they are losing their religion/spirituality at some time in their life and the plaintive vocals give that eerie feeling of being lost out there and alone without God or whatever someone believes in that grounds her.
