You've been scamed! Here's how the trick works. Most coke machines have a slow response time on the coin return and you have to hold it for 1 to 2 seconds to get a response. So you fill the machine up with coins then you jiggle coin return rapidly to show there are no coins, press a bunch of buttons hold down the coin return till the coins drop and it looks like you hacked the machine.

Postalben is correct, but there are some vending machines (food/snacks) that have codes embedded within them, and if you know the right code, you can have all sorts of fun.
