    I remember driving around Beverly Hills one day... back when I lived in LA... back when I thought I could make it there... playing "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" full blast on the car CD. And actually seeing "Eddie Van Halen" behind the wheel of a big, expensive something, driving right behind me, flying down Sunset, heading toward Wilshire. I thought I was dreaming. But I'm sure it was you. The volume was so loud in my car, I always wondered if you could hear it. And I wondered what a fame like that does to you--one where you hear other people playing the music you rip from your soul? Who could deal with that? Especially artists--we're so raw. Who wouldn't need to anesthetize that? I wanted to flag you down and tell you how much I appreciated your genius... how much your music meant to me... and I guess I'm doing that now. Eddie, there are those of us... an army of us... who savor every nuance of your musical gift. Your playing is daring and joyful and flows from your heart with boundless enthusiasm. You have a fire like no other. Hendrix. Townshend. That's where you are. Gods? I don't know. Legends, yes. I'm happy you kicked booze. I quit, too, and I often choke-up when I gut-check that I had the strength and sense to beat it. But we're human. All to frail. We open our eyes. If we're smart, we take the necessary steps. That's the rough path to self-actualization. And, look at you with your warm, happy smile. On top of the mountain. Keep playing. Keep writing. We're listening to every lick. A fan..... Doug
