To any people still in denial that the Spartan would lose,
The Spartan shield is 4 feet in diameter, the show states that the average Spartan was around 5'8''. If you do the math, this means that the shield is covering 71% of his body at all times. This is WITHOUT HIM MOVING IT AT ALL. Which he would be as much as necessary.
The Spartan spear is 8 feet long, this means if the Ninja gets within 8 feet of the Spartan he will be stabbed. There is no real way to dispute this, the spear was that long for a reason. If the ninja is further away than 8 feet, he can do nothing. Perhaps now you'd argue that he would throw a shruiken or black egg, well remember, now he's AT LEAST 8 feet away (and 8 feet means he literally has the spear touching his stomach), the Spartan will have no problem raising his shield to deflect the blow. *Assuming the ninja doesn't miss in the first place.*
I know someone will find a way to keep speaking, but I have just indisputably proven that the Spartan would defeat the Ninja at least 51% of the time.

half of the reason some people cant belive ninjas lost is because there hardcore naruto fans when there like 25 seriously get over it. spartans won they were trained from age 7 to be a warrior as babys if the were even just to small the were droped of a god dam cliff and those that say the steel would break through the bronze armor it didnt they tested on the show and like the guy said its a battle not murder the spartan when he is asleep any one can kill another man in there sleep. so lets see,Spartan, trained from age 7 full bronze armor a shield that was impenrtable or a ninja overrated small dicked asian thats weapons cant pierce spartan armor. G wonder who going to win

Unfortunately, the Ninja did not document their acheivments, so we are left with conjecture, myth, and urban legend to fill in the gaps. Just like the Pirate (who should not have won against the knight), the Ninja has been inflated by pop-culture to legendary status. So did the NInja wreak havoc and death on the unsuspecting Samurai, or were they merely a nuisance to the Samurai, who still found plenty of time to wage war against each other for over 700 years? Everyone seems to be a Ninja expert, either through movies, video games, comic books, or they study the martial art themselves, but how many people really know about the Spartans? I do know that they didn't run around yelling "This is Sparta!" and kicking people into oubliettes, and they certainly didn't wear leather speedos. The Spartan represents the pinnacle of human toughness and endurance(which is not really attainable in our modern culture) and of discipline and combat skiils (which are attainable, to some degree at least). The main question raised in determining who wins is this: If the Ninja doesn't get hit, he can kill the Spartan. IF. Not IF but WHEN the Spartan gets in close, he WILL kill his enemy. IF versus WILL. I'd bet on the sure thing - the Spartan.

The only way to have a "fair fight", is for two warriors to meet up in a caged ring and fight with no armor at all, and no weapons. Their body is their armor, and their fists are the weapons. This match-up is unfair not because the spartan won, but because the ninja had an arsenal of weapons that was more advanced than the Spartans. They were not showcased on the show for the sole purpose that the ninja would kill the spartan in a completely unfair and brutal way, so to make up for this they gave the ninja weapons that would essentially even up the match. I mean come on, what is more entertaining: a quick 5 second fight, or a long, bloody, and absolutely brutal fight where the most popular warrior wins.

Did you simulate the ninja's hand fighting? One of the ninja's greatest weapons against the Spartan, in my opinion, is his hands, especially against the Spartan's shield. Because with the Ninja versus Spartan simulation, the spartan's only advantage over the ninja was his shield. This is the move I envisioned the Ninja useing for closer-range fighting: The Ninja would first use his ball/chain method (with possibly a combo of something else) to comepletly disarm the Spartan of his spear. He could then use his Hands to grab the shield(on both sides), and twist it behind the Spartan's back, from there, if the Spartan didn't let go, the Ninja would break his arm, if the Spartan did, the Ninja would deprive him of his precious shield, his best weapon.

Taking into account the whole season (i've only recently picked up the show during its marathon) I think the match-ups were interesting given the diversity of weaponry and training. This would be what one expects in bar room chatter as this was essentially the genesis of the program.
I think its needs to be appreciated that all the warriors, not just a select few, were represented in a Cole's notes version with only a limited representation of their weaponry. The weaponry got the most display because its more entertaining than discussion of fighting strategy, tactics, combat philosopy, etc. I would imagine that some of this was accounted for in the combat simulator.
One clear issue I have is the representation of the katana as solely a slashing weapon. It also had stabbing capability and it would have been very interesting to see how the Viking chainmail faired against this sharp, slim blade. As Max himself said in the aftermath, chainmail is not good at handling stabbing actions. I suspect a good thrust throught the xiphoid process would penetrate the chainmail, diaphragm, and heart not only lacerating the ventricles but likely paralyzing the myocardium with unconsciousness approx 3 seconds later from lack of cerebral bloodflow. It would be fun to see a show solely devoted to addressing fan comments like this one. I think both fans and weapons experts would have some surprizes.
I would also like to add my voice to the chorus that is asking for some re-pairing of season one battles, like Spartan vs. Samurai two armored warrior cultures. It would also be interesting to see larger groupings of these warriors as it has already been pointed out these often did not fight singley.
The last is a question about the simulations, was there a time dependency to victory for any of the battles i.e. did the ninja score more victories in the first few minutes and if they didn't win early were they overwhealmed by the Spartan?

And I'm very impressed that you guys put up that comment I left on that episode. Certainly I understand you try to find a balance to the battles and not have either warrior with too much of an advantage nature/field wise. I believe you did a good job answering the question I had, and I think you had summed up a lot of the other questions. You guys are awesome. I was very interested in just how the system works

people need to understand, ninja were NOT assasins! I dare you, find ONE historial document of a ninja performing an assasination of any kind. the truth is, just as pirates were basically sailors, ninja were basically samurai. it sounds weird, but it is very very true. also, the shuriken that was used by the ninja "master" in the show was a cheap as crap 440 stainless steel shuriken that can be bought on the internet NEW for less than 5 dollars(trust me, I checked.) If they would have used a true shuriken, the results would be very different. deeper penetration, more accuracy, etc. plus, in this webcast it showed that they also tested the tetsubishi (or caltrops, as they called them) offscreen. these tetsubishi that were shown were also cheaply made, inaccurate, and found very easily for almost nothing on the internet. True tetsubishi were much longer, with the upward spikes being up to 1 inch long, and the 4 spikes in a triangular shape with 3 pointing down and 1 pointing up in the center. Im not even going to get in to all the other inaccuracies I saw, such as the ninjato, the fukiyo(or fubokari as the so-called master said) the metsubeishi (or black eggs) being filled with glass, which is not true at all. glass making took a lot of time and hard work at the time and it wasnt worth it for one use. they would actually be filled with ground pepper, sand, shavings of metal, flour, or a combination of all. Dont get me wrong, the spartan wasnt accurately shown as well, but not to the extent of the ninja.

ABSOLUTE FUCKERY!
First and foremost, how can you say a ninja that has both black eggs and cattletrops would only slightly bother the spartan. I question why each weapon was only used one at a time, or why the ninja always attacked from obvious angles. I am not saying the result wouldn't have been the same, but seriously the Ninja was completely misrepresented in every capacity.
Ninjas never use direct angled when aiming for a body so why have a guy chuck at bronze armor with a kama? it makes no sense. How can you constantly say the ninjas were created purely for battle with the samurai only to say spartan armor would be too much for them, last i check the samura had more armor.
Its a joke. The Whole Thing is a joke.
Meanwhile the guy from USC is about as pompous of an ass as you could have found. To insult fans because they dont agree with your numbers and binary code is lame.
They never directly answer questions on this show as well, i have seen enough politicians and boxing promoters do this same song and dance.
WHY IS IT THERE WERE NO TEST FOR REACTION TIME, OR RANGE OF VISION?
SINCE WHEN DOESN'T THE ABILITY TO REACT HAVE ANY INPUT ON A BATTLE?
MY MAJOR POINT IS THAT HELMETS RESTRICT THE RANGE OF VIEW... THE NINJA WAS KNOWN FOR AMAZING SPEED. SPEED, WHICH MEANS WITH A HEAVY SHIELD AND A BLACK EGG IN YOUR EYE, I SEE IT AS BULLCRAP

Also how about longbowmen (a-la) agincourt vs redcoats or napoleonic infantry? I have heard the range and rate of fire were similiar for both parties, with the edge in accuracy going to the longbowmen dues to the lack of rifling on the muskets and the fact the bowman had many more years of practise on his side.
Again you'd need to do it for groups rather than individuals and you'd have to find someone big and strong enough to pull one of those yew bows (those guys were freaks!)

Great show guys, very amusing and interesting. My one suggestion would've been with the spartan to look at the phalanx formation more.
The spartan was basically trained from birth to fight in the phalanx as the ultimate form of battle in his world. In this form of fighting the prowess of the individual was secondary to his ability to fight with his fellows as a cohesive unit and to lay down his life for those fellows. His shield for example was not so much for his own protection as it was for the man next to him (he would in turn be protected by his neighbour). The ferocious spears, when grouped together in a phalanx formed a living hedge of wicked points and an unstoppable force.
In fact the phalanx lived on in various incarnations right up to the advent of gunpowder.
If you ever revisit the hoplites, might I suggest a comparison between a spartan phalanx and a roman cohort?
This would be fascinating.

The ninjas would rarely fight toe-to-toe with anyone obviously. Spartans are Incredible warriors no doubt about it, they can hold their own against anyone, however, this is an incredibly stupid matchup. The staff is obviously biased. Reason one- The mascot of the show is a Spartan. Reason two- a member of the staff was representing the spartans. The ninja would easily kill a spartan. That is a fact. The ninja were the people who killed the SAMURAI. Most intelligent people know a Ninja would not fight the Spartan head on. Which brings me to my next point, something they pointed out, Ninja were great ASSASSINS not warriors. That being said, they obviously have a HUGE disadvantage. So, WHY PUT THEM ON THE SHOW? They said it themselves! They obviously never planned on giving the ninja a fair shot considering the show is called Deadliest warrior not Deadliest assassin. Their stupidity is laughable.

First of all, I think that the first season, in its attempt to be as interesting as possible, took the bait and accidentally went for the status quote (though the 1st season was great) I, personally, would have LOVED to see spartan versus gladiator, ninja versus apache, Pirate vs. Maori. I hope they take that into consideration for the next season. O:

Agreed, but that was just the movie. I'm sure every time the egg hit in the simulation the result was a dead Spartan. The simulation likely determined that the eggs were blocked by the shield, rightly or wrongly. I don't thing the show was implying that the Spartan could effectively fight a Ninja while blind.

Great episode and it certainly generated a lot of feedback. I was happy the Spartan won and I thought they would. In the end, the Ninja just couldn't get around the shield. I agree that this scenario, a fair fight if you will, is not the best for the Ninja. That being said, this show is not about Ninja's assassinating someone. Could you imagine a Spartan assassin slipping quietly into a house a night complete with armor and shield? While it might make for a good comedy, it's not the point of the show. Neither is having a Ninja kill every other warrior in their sleep, who would watch that? I'd like to see the Ninja back in action though. This time against the Knight. Talk about a speed advantage??!!??

In the espisoda three I don't know why they did not put the sai or the yari in the weapon selection for the ninja. The sai would have gone threw the spartans shield and/or threw his feet to take him out of the fight for the killing blow to win and the spear could hook the spartans shield away to thrust for the kill.

this was an inacurate matchup the ninja did have armor he had chainmail armor under his black cloths i dont know why they would use a sterotypical ninja instead of a historical one also the ninjato wasnt even a real sword the ninja used a katana that was about 6-8 inches shorter and was stored in a full length scabbard to confuse his opponents making them think he had a longer sword also if you do not belive that the ninja wore armor here is a pic of actual real historical ninja armor http://www.japanese-ninja-armor.com/FullNinjaArmor/ninja-armor-details.html

This show is bad ass and they do the best they can, now i believe the spartan phalanx is im portant and the night stealth is important. So in a WAR a spartan army would rape a ninja army. At night a ninja would sneak up and destroy a spartan. In the end it comes down to the size of the dicks, spartans have big dicks and hot ass women, whereas ninjas a little asian dicks and only fuck nasty geishas or rice farmers.

That was stupid. I saw a promo for the show and thought it would be good. Very dissappointing. The Simulation starts off with a Spartan under the tree with a Ninja perched above him. Dead Spartan walking. Throwing star, knife , sword to the jugular. Done. 10 feet into the field, blow dart to any exposed body part. Since when does a Ninja yell while attacking from behind? 4 kills Ninja, 0 Michigan State. Elapsed time, 12 seconds. Spartan turns on the Ninja, and has already lost his enemy(dead again), Ninja shows himself again, a little hand to hand combat. I think the kishurigama(sp?) which did hit the Spartan in the back of the neck in the simulation, could have also been used with the knife part to go past the shield, be drawn back to severely cut the jugular. The kishu. can cut the steel chain, but cant pierce the copper?(If you see the way the "expert" handles the weapon, you can see why..He doesn't snap the wrist/follow thru) Spartan gets hit with egg, just the sweat from the forehead will render blindness, again losing his target. Follows into the woods down the hill, (notice on the left the huge black space for Ninja to hide in), crashing thru the trees. Ninja cuts the Spartan(his name was Achilles) in the back of his heels rendering him unable to walk, or again dead. Ninja again with frontal assault with darts from 20 feet away? A little more hand to hand, Spartan is able to catch Ninja with 60 POUNDS of gear on?? Now with the score about 10-2 at this time, the Spartan certainly has his work cut out for him. Especially while carrying 40% of his body weight. I just dont like watching something to have somebody tell me that I didn't ee what I just saw. Kind of like Donald Trump telling me that Joan Rivers won The Apprentice. Funny, my son just told me tha an Apache beat a Gladiator with the same technique.

So far I have enjoyed the show how ever I'm not a man of science. In fact I think you have too many. I'm a well trained martial artist, who has been trained in many different styles ranging from Kenpo Karate to Arnis and almost everywhere in between. As a trained fighter I know for a fact that the out come of a fight has nothing to do with the weapon. Although it's true the weapon can affect the out come of any fight it truly comes down to the skill each worrier with their own weapon or their skill to defended agenst a weapon. I also know that history has many ruthless fighters such as gangs or Vikings or even the samurai, but just because gangs have effective weapons dose not mean that a gang member is a skilled fighter.

DID YOU KNOW THERE WAS A SCOTTISH ZULU CHIEF?
It's a long story but a true one - in 1858 a white guy was made into a full Zulu Chief. You can read about it online in my book WHITE SHAKA BOY http://www.whiteshaka.com
As for Shaka - it is really important to know that he is famous in Africa for inventing a new kind of short, stabbing spear - an "assegai" or, as he called it the "iklwa" from the sound it made when it entered the heart - which fundamentally changed Southern African warfare.
Instead of throwing spears, Shaka developed a new, high-contact method of warfare which gave him a devastating advantage over rival tribes in a large area of Southeastern Africa.
Using a new full-body shield, his troops were taught to rush their opponents under this cover. Then, with a special technique, they would pull away their enemies' shields and expose their opponents' underarms though which they could pierce their hearts with a deep thrusting stab.

I'm so surprized that no one has left the most important comment: that most to none of these confrontations would have ever made it past the first weapon!!!! the ninja wouldn't need anything else after killing the spartan with his katana. and you can say the same for all the other match ups. no one is letting you pull out every single weapon you have in your batman utility belt if it's a damn fight to the death. lol
if 2 warriors can kill each other with swords but 1 is swinging haymakers and the other is jabbing.... the jabs have it!
in a boxing match maybe not....

The ninja fan boys seem to be switching tactics. First they complained about the stealth not being factored in. After that was pointed out to them, they are now whining "Well, if it's deadliest warrior and not 'deadliest assassin', then why was the ninja even on there?" Our culture seems to be obsessed with ninjas. This show seems to be using many popular and well known warriors ie Viking, samurai, Pirate, Shaolin Monk etc. I don't think i can imagine the outcry from the fan boys if the ninja wasn't included. They would be howling that the ninja be included. So he was, and he lost. I think the fan boys just can't except that their "legendary shadow warrior" lost fair and square. Let's face it, ninjas aren't used to fighting fair. They fight best when their enemies can't. So when it comes to a head-on battles on even ground, ninjas just can't stand up to the Spartan.

Most folks are jugding this by the movie 300, however they dont realize is where the spartans held off the persians. It was thermoplye the narrow passage that housed the 300 spartans and behind them which stood 7,000 arcadians. The spartans used the terrain to there advantange. Small little details people leave out! I'm not refuting the results, Spartans were a millitary unit and used their phalanx in formation. I'm just saying many ninja's were able to take down samuri's who were greater swordsman than spartans! Food for thought!

I'm glad that they're taking time to address these comments as well. I wish I could have gotten this in sooner, because my biggest complaint was that NEITHER of the people representing ninjutsu were actually ninjas. The smaller one was a practitioner of what looked like wushu and the larger one was just handy with some of the weapons. As a pratitioner of toshindo, and someone who has been trained in swords, you could see the lack of skill and training in the bigger guy when cutting the pig. And there was little talk of the actual physical martial art of ninjutsu (taijutsu) which would have better explained how the ninjas moved in battle. Contrary to popular opinion, we don't do flips to get around. Many of us actually walk from here to there.

Great Show guys. I love the concept of mixing science and history. However, as a Classical Archaeologist, I do have a problem with your Spartan VS. Ninja episode. In it you claim the Spartan is a Bronze Age warrior, but this is not quite correct. While evidence of Spartan habitation can be traced as far back as the Middle Neolithic period, e.g. the site of Kouphovouno, Bronze Age Spartans went into decline during the 11th-9th century B.C., which led to major reforms. The character portrayed on your show is from Classical Sparta, 600-460 B.C., and though he wears Bronze armor, he is not a Bronze Age Spartan. Additionally, in the show you conflate the time periods represented regarding Spartan phalanx warfare. Classical Spartans did not run all around in hand to hand combat. This was more a trait of Bronze Age warfare. Classical Spartans were more regimented and men rarely broke from their phalanx formation. Their strength was in their number. Finally, contrary to the Ninja expert's opinion, the Spartan was actually trained in stealth as part of his initiation was sneaking up on and killing a helot, one of the slave population. Not sure if this helps your readers, or the Ninja....woohaa! Otherwise keep up the great work.
