How dare she? That is the longest question I have ever heard! She sounded like she was running for election! I can't watch her on TV and
I think the internet is worse. This woman has no class. Can't buy it ,
no matter how much they pay you. You owe this family an apology for the heartless interview and all I cal say is, CBS, that sound you hear is your ratings droping like a lead balloon! God bless the Edwards family.

This is disgustingly bad journalism, she is victimizing the interviewees. What a lack of humanism and open mindedness. The best way to die is to give in to disease and to close down the rest of one's life. The Edwards should carry on doing what they love and what makes them feel like themselves, and be continuous with their previous lives. This woman is doing the "outfoxed" thing, it is a disgrace and reflects badly on American journalism. Many people with illness can run countries, big business, create art. Shocking shocking shocking.

I suppose he will stop talking with cbs now..perhaps the simplest solution would be for cbs to fire kacky kurckick and for fox news to hire her,....then fire her in some horrible manner, shortly afterwards. i see a mid-day montel williams/jane pauleyesque talk show in kackies future..this week on kacky...human deformities that look like the virgin mary...

SCOOTERNYC,
Of course we are all entitled to our opinions and I'm not trying to pick a beef with you, but isn't it possible that this is the Edwards' version of living life to the fullest? Why such a negative take on this decision, when some people who want to make a large positive difference in the world may just enjoy it as a way of life. I mean don't we want a president and first lady for whom the position is as important as life and death, in these times.
Where they supposed to hide it, and then have to come clean about it?
I am saying this not as an Edwards supporter, but as someone who can admire anyone's courage to follow a calling, no matter what.

Um, folks, this a paste-job of Couric's questions, with the Edwardses' answers excised -- not a Couric monologue (scary phrase, that). Tasteless and inappropriate questions? Sure, a lot of them, but any reporter in her shoes would've asked more or less the same things. Welcome to TV journalism, i.e., the smelly dregs of the culture.

uh, it was a montage of all her questions clipped together, not one long question. i think she asked exactly what was on a lot of peoples minds. if it were my wife, i would have, at the very least, said we were going to take some time to digest it all, talk it over and see how it goes and then make a decision. most people certainly wouldn't have been all over the news the next day and on the campaign trail whoring for media attention. it is dispicable. truth is, huy was getting crushed in the preliminary polls by obama and hillary, and he is trying to disgustingly use this to gain numbers. dispicable.

The worst professional mistake Couric made was this: she was making a speech instead of asking a simple question. Instead, she was spending so much time doing: "some say this, others say that." And that went on forever.
Any good reporter should elicit a substantive answer from a simple question and not grandstanding. Problem with folks like Couric is they forget viewers are interested in their guests not in them.
Whether what she did was a "cheap shot" was a different issue. Professionaly she is a lousy interviewer, in this case.

I don't like Katie Couric, either, but I want to set the record straight on one thing. I watched the program last night, and this audio only contains the questions that she asked, not the responses. In between each, John Edwards or his wife answered. So, it's not quite as bad as it sounds - although the questions were pretty brutal.

When Couric was hired, I thought, "CBS must have a death wish!" Going from Rather to Couric made it clear CBS didn't get the concept that people were not going to watch news that is so unbalanced and politically biased. (Maybe CBS could research why FOX is doing so well in viewership?) Now CBS has her working on destroying "60 Minutes." Oh Well, we really don' t need three networks, anyway

It is a sad commentary on the American mind when so many people--as many of you have done here--cannot separate your sympathy for the Edwards' from the fact that last week's press conference was a coldly calculated political maneuver.
Edwards hedged his bet, and it is already paying off. Just look at the number of people on this little forum who are ready to defend HIM, simply because of HER illness.
I applaud any TV news person who is willing to ask these tough questions, rather than lob softballs at Edwards, as he obviously hoped would happen.
Do you misty-eyed people think that the world would stop for even half a second in sympathy with the illness of a First Lady? Regardless of who occupies the White House, you can make book that those who would bring down the USA--Hugo Chavez, Kim Jung Il, or "alphabet," over in Iran--would not hesitate to take advantage of the President's weakness and lack of focus.
Worse, I think many of you would act differently, depending who the person involved might be. Were this Laura Bush, you would have a death watch on HuffPo, and leftists dancing in the street.

I saw the report last night, and I am no fan of Couric, but she actually stayed with the questions as long as she needed to. It's the first time I thought she did a good interview, ever. In context, her grilling was warranted. For all the tragedy Edwards has faced with his wife and son, he seems incredibly detached and impervious in public. Maybe not so in private, but maybe in private he is so overly driven he can't see the forest for the trees.
His answer to one of his questions followed his wife's which essentially said, "We need to give our (6 &8 year old) kids wings to fly, not just leave them in the nest, waiting to be fed. When Katie commented they were still too young for wings, Edwards said, "You need to start."
Plus, Couric has dealt with the death of her husband, so she knows too well the complexities of this story.
I'd cut her some slack and thank her for perhaps revealing a real character flaw in John Edwards. His ambition is obviously blinding, and his wife drank the Kool Aid, too. That is tragic.

You gotta be kidding me. Katie Couric says Edwards is capitalizing on his wife's cancer? The same Katie Couric who showed the world her colonoscopy after her first husband died of colon cancer? She used that tragedy to "make" her career. This is a blatant attack on Edwards when they are very vulnerable. Katie should not second guess their choice.

Katie Couric is a journalist and she was really just doing her job in asking questions that are on any INFORMED voters mind.
Referring to her as a "bitch" or to Matt Drudge as a "douchebag" is ignorant and counter productive.
Edwards announcement of his wifes illness in conjunction with his run for the presidency IS grossly suspicious.
The RIGHT thing to have done was to keep the illness a private and personal family matter instead of grandstanding about it.
The fact that he issued a press release saying he did not want "the sympathy vote" is proof that he really does expect exactly that.
The bottom line is that he DOES seem to be using her illness to boost news coverage on his campaign and it is repellant in the extreme.
For those of you who are resorting to name calling. Grow up. There is really NO excuse for that sort of behavior from mature adults

Of course they are in denial. Who wants to face death? The doctors will surely try and present as optimistic an outcome as possible.
Good for you Katie, as a fellow spouse who has also lost a beloved spouse to cancer, I UNDERSTAND Katie's questions. Stage 4 (the WORST stage) cancer DOES result in extreme measures to stay alive, to fight the battle and the reality is that death will, absent a miracle, occur before an inauguration. I would NOT trade one minute of time I spent helping my wife fight cancer, holding her when she got sick from the chemo, helping to administer her drugs, holding her when she cried, giving her strength to do activities with our children. I will NEVER regret those times of just coming home EVERYDAY for lunch. I do regret every minute of being away, of missed opportunites to talk to, embrace or just in some small way bring more meaning to those final days of life. I reorganized my career to put my wife first AND DO NOT REGRET IT. I DO Regret NOT doing it sooner. If you knew you were going to die, would you want your family away from you, while you're too sick to travel. And what about the type of man that would leave his wife behind ... not this week, but when she's truly sick, to campaign. As a widow, Katie knows what they have in their future ... the Edwards think they know, but they don't until hey go through it. They are about to face the tearing apart of two soulmates, and I PRAY THAT JOHN SPEND EVERY MOMENT HE CAN WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN. There will be other campaigns, ther will never be another opportunity to help your spouse try to fight cancer and face death.
Doctors who treat cancer are usually too optimistic, becasue they don't want the patient to loose hope .... BUT metastatic stage 4 cancer has a very very short life expectancy.

Let us just imagine his wife was suffering from depression or addiction... then when the media would ask about it he would say, and rightfuly so, "That is between my family and my wife and has nothing to do with the campaign... it's a personal matter therefore I will have no futher comment on that." However, since it's cancer and he figures it's worth some sympathy votes he trots her out on the national stage Disgusting. Couric should have asked him... "Isn't this a personal matter to be dealth with by you and your family?"

Yes, it is sad that John and Elizabeth Edwards are facing a new challenge with her cancer, but blind ambition for power...a SIX YEAR quest has clouded their responsibilities to be loving parents to their children with the time remaining. Pursuit of power (immense wealth they already have) at the expense of their children...who may not have a mommy in the near future. Please!!! Wake up. Many people in similar circumstances, but without the safety net of wealth, can only wince in envy and watch as the Edwards family squander precious time in pursuit of fame and power. Sad.

You guys prove that liberalism is a mental disorder! Do you not have ANY common sense? A presidential candidate's wife has been diagnosed w/ a terminal illness. Statistics show that only 1 in 4 live past 5 years after breast cancer spreads to the bone. If elected, America very well may witness their First Lady passing away. This is a very serious diagnosis and I was very impressed that Katie asked the important questions that are on the minds of rational thinkers!
The role as Elizabeth's husband and the role of POTUS will both be very critical, time consuming and both will require decisions without hesitation. As POTUS, you can't just drop what you are doing.
It is inevitable that one of the two roles will be neglected. For anyone to deny that fact, they must be in denial.

I believe the Edwards' decided to make the announcement rather than seeing it on the front page of a tabloid. And I am sure that a President Edwards would not be the first to deal with family issues while in office. Abraham Lincoln's wife was an emotional cripple. They lost a child and several family members during his term. Betty Ford was an alcoholic.
Sorry Katie, you're no Ed Bradley.
