Description: Like so many others, Franco Zeffirelli has fallen under the spell of Maria Callas' magnificent voice. In this cinematic tribute to a true diva, he moves away from the pinhole to give us a peek beneath the facade of legend the way only a finely spun fiction can. Toward the end of her reclusive life, Maria Callas has lost her magnificent voice--and with it the adoration of thousands. When an old friend (and her ex-manager) rediscovers Callas and learns of her plight, he gently guides her back into the limelight for a final performance of her seminal role, Carmen. This time captured forever on film. Also starring Joan Plowright as a favored friend and confidante and Gabriel Garko as the younger lover who finds himself enchanted by Callas.
