April 18, 2007 - Cole Portocarrero is the Executive Director of the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition. Her top priority everyday is to make bicycling a prominent and viable form of transportation for everyone in the San Francisco/Bay Area. She's appealing to all who haven't pedalled in years to come out and rediscover an often overlooked way to commute or travel. For more information about this cool event, check out: http://www.bayareabikes.org/btwd/index.php or check the websites of your local bike coalition. Help the cause and email this to a friend and get them biking to work.

    Dear Cole Portocarrero,

I don't ride enough. I used to ride everywhere all the time (40 years ago) as I didn't have a driver's lic. until I was 28. Again, I don't have one--age 62. I am epileptic & seizures are currently not totally controlled. I work at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, CA. I live in Diamond Bar, about 17 miles from the DLH. I carpool. Once or twice a week, I work later than anyone who lives near or past me and therefore cannot be depending on them for trans. home. I have to take care of that myself. So, I take my bike to work in the trunk of my carpoller, and ride home at 3 or 4 am. It takes me about 1 hour 20 minutes UPHILL (+/-) w/an elevation dif of about 700 feet from Anaheim to Diamond Bar.

I take Bicycling Magazine. About 2-3 years ago, they had people in Orange County contribute little ditties about riding to work. I was one of many who "won". I was one of the many who rec'd a bicycle from Bicycling Mag. Presentation was in Irvine where Shimano has some offices. We rode from the offices to the train station about 2 miles where the press was waiting for us. Made a short report, and returned. I was given a Giant with interior gears (7 speed). Therefore it had no cluster and only 1 chain ring. I never used it to commute to or from work because of the incline. I still use my Trek 1000.

Lots of talk, lots of talk,

    John Hunt

There are several/many at the DLH that ride bikes. Jiminy Cricket pays people $2/day to ride; $1 to carpool, ride bus, train, walk etc to keep the air cleaner. I have a savings of about $825 at this time!
