"Double-crossing Japanzees"? Listen, the Japanese people of today are great people, and I would never think of desparaging them, but you have to realize that at the time this film was made, we were at a war with them, and this was in response to the Japanese military. In that time, and that time only, was this appropriate. (all that to say, it was very funny, like all Popeye toons).

I would disagree with mouthw4sh in characterizing this as only a response to the Japanese military. Anti-japanese sentiment in the U.S. at the time extended to the Japanese people as well and was encouraged by the U.S. government through many other types of war-time propaganda (much like that which is used today to characterize muslims). I would also disagree with the statement that it was appropriate. It did serve its purpose in creating anti-japanese hysteria but the result was the involuntary incarceration of hundreds of thousands of japanese in internment camps. There was no need for this response as there was no threat from Japanese-Americans (many served in the military fighting against Germany in the European theatre of war - while their families were jailed for simply being japanese). Selective hate of people based on their national origin is simple wrong - regardless of the era or the "excuses" brought to bear.
With kind regards only. I do not intend to disrespect you only to disagree with you. We may be political enemies but we are still both Americans.
