This is Tommy, Thrand's assistant, I would like to thank you for addressing our question. We did have some other issues with the show and we feel like there are still some discrepancies, however that is to be expected when you are hiring people who are not experts. No complaints here with your method, it's just how you choose to entertain the ignorant masses. We would like an opportunity to formally discuss this at length with Max and his team to perhaps collaborate on future episodes to avoid such conflicts. Thrand and I are experts on many ancient cultures and their combat abilities, it certainly wouldn't do any harm for you to contact us for a consultation.

This aftermath didn't address nothing in my mind and I have been a norse re-enactor as long as Thrand. First why did the viking "expert" use a strapped shield in which the viking did not use because its a little earlier period and more of a horseman's shield of the Vendal period, 2nd the great axe wasn't a great axe they switched the axe's when Casey was talking about the distance of the great axe that was a true Axe but the testing on the gel dummies they used a shorter shaft. Intelligence mmm again the samurai saying the are more intelligent really? the norseman making a awesome ships and mastery making blades as much as the japanese and writing poetry oh I forgot the saga's one of the great medieval works of history again I don't think it was addressing the issue more of defending their inaccuracies

First of all Tommy they do hire people with vast amounts of knowledge about their respective warrior cultures. That's what these guys on the show are for (assuming you believe their credentials. However, that's not the point I'm here to address).
I saw your video and it's obvious that you have a great knowledge of your vikings. However, seriously you guys didn't look like you understood samurai at all. This is a show and you're losing your minds over it. Calm down. How can you take this seriously anyway. I've said to all my friends the show's entertaining but not worth it from a historical perspective. It's a show about locker room arguments. If you want to consult for the show you should also be talking to people who are experts in samurai weaponry and tactics since you didn't make a good case for them in that video. Ofcourse, you were trying to prove a point. The wrong attitude to have in scientific testing. Frankly, based on the inaccuracies I saw on both sides I'd be willing to throw this out completely or call it a draw.

Wow, I got on.
I wasn't expecting any kind of concession, since that's not what the aftermath is. They can't go back on the results, even if they were cemented by only 22 out of 1000 kills. In my opinion, it wouldn't take much to cross that 22 kill gap. For example, no doubt many of the Yumi's kills were from the unguarded legs, since this is the only spot that's open when the shield is up. Well, some thick linen wrappings (which were used.) would defend that are quite well against arrows. That said, it's an impossible task to answer a question like this for certain, and perhaps the test results do reflect that it would be, as Max Geiger said, "too close to call."
Viking Samurai
Overall Kills: 478 to 522
Close Range:
Great Axe: 134
Katana: 137
Mid Range:
Long Sword: 175
Naginata: 171
Long Range:
Spear: 92
Yumi: 114
Special Weapons:
Shield: 77
Kanabo: 100

Superior intellect? Go read the Havamal. Read some sagas. Read Beowulf. Take a look at the Dane Law- a prototype legal legislation from which our modern legal systems in the west are derived. Look at some longboat designs. Viking sailing technology in the 10th century was just about as advanced as Japanese naval technology until the Meiji Restoration in the 1800's.
At least the Vikings' belief system and intellectual ideas originated in their own culture, where as the samurai practice of Confucianism, along with other intellectual and religious systems was handed to them by the Chinese. While samurais were staring at flowers and writing haiku poems, Vikings were developing trade lanes across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East as well as discovering lands previously uncharted.

Thrand is taking this way way too seriously. He's posting all over the place to check out his videos. He even posted to my site in which I replied:
"I don't understand. You neither have hand to hand combat nor weaponry skills, and yet you believe you can do a better job than the people from Deadliest Warrior? Sorry, I don't think so."
In short, you (Thrand and Tommy) look like my 8 and 10 year nephews goofing around.

The viking great axe Glanced yet he only got one swing and it was way taller than an average Samurai? If the blow was dead on I think they would see there would be some compressed if not ruptured vertebrae in his back and neck and I think he would be knocked out if not seriously injured or killed. It would not matter if Great axe pierced helm or not the blow to the neck would have disabled him if it was dead on force and no glance.
The axe that they used was way heavier than historical axes and shorted handled leading me to believe it was a wood chopper not a danish great axe. Which when they talked about it being slow of course one they tested was it wasn't the right axe. The real Danish Broad axe is same length and about same weight as Naginata and would be just as fast.

How exactly does someone become an expert on ancient combat techniques? Thrand's video is probably pretty accurate as far as how an average person would approach combat. I think a lot of people get their information from movies and other ENTERTAINMENT sources. I don't claim to know or care about either culture but, it seems like most of the arguments are based on things that may not be generally true.

This comment has been buried by our users. Reveal Comment
To answer your question there are several ways of becoming an expert on these cultures. For the samurai there are numerous schools of kenjutsu scattered around the world where the training methods don't differ much today than they did centuries ago. As for vikings, I'm certain that they had a training system in their martial arts that's passed down like most cultures do. It's a matter of finding a teacher. Also, with their reach there are likely historical written records describing techniques and weaponry.
Now there are certain things that aren't very accurate with every warrior they've shown (don't get me started on the sword technique the samurai was using in the final battle) those things are generally in the final battle choreography which is solely for entertainment purposes.
You want to become an expert, find a teacher and crack a book. In fact, crack several hundred books and try the stuff out for yourself too. That's about it.
As for the numbers, as far as I'm concerned, we can call this a draw and I'm a samurai fan. But in the end. It's a show. Relax.

I personally think that the weapons matchups could have been better. Now, I don't claim to be any more qualified than the people on Deadliest Warrior, as I have never been involved in any martial art or combat sport (although there is a dojo that teaches Eishin-ryu iaido that I am seriously considering joining) and all of my knowledge comes from my own personal research, but here's my ideas for possible alternative weapons matchups for this episode:
Mid-range:
Viking: Spear + shield
Samurai: Yari
Close range:
Viking: Viking sword + shield (why was it referred to as a "long sword"?)
Samurai: Katana/tachi
Long range:
Viking: Viking bow
Samurai: Yumi
Special:
Viking: Great axe
Samurai: Naginata
Anyone else have any thoughts about alternative weapons matchups for this episode? I'm not saying that Spike should redo the entire episode; I think it's admirable that they so adamantly stick to their conclusion. I'm merely offering my own ideas on the subject. If you don't care about my opinion, then please ignore this post.

I'm torn, I'm happy they addressed trhand, and didn't pick his helmet test in order to cruelly dismiss him like many did after watching his third video( I'll be honest thrand, as I said on your vid, I really do feel that one hurt you more than helped, even though a good point.)
on the other hand, that samurai dude bugs me more than thrand seems to bug that volis guy( sorry if I gave the wrong name) he dismisses the viking guy and vikings, and the dude just takes it! he talks of how the viking has to get high to fight?? WTF? I mean, I thought tat budism and confucism taught being humble. that is I think what really beat the viking. the experts were more humble than him. I still feel that if they really used the shield properly they would have shown it used properly, and that sword/axe/spear plus shield gives very few Arrow/Katana kills to samurai, but watev. I'll just go on steaming that the viking and knight got unfairly beat, but I am ready to mostly move on.I love a good debate, so I may wind up eating those words, but oh well.

To address Matt Nelson's last comments, size and strength do count in the simulations, both for the better and worse. Those factors were probably part of why Wallace and the Spartan won their respective battles. It's pretty obvious that you'd need a lot of strength to carry a 6-foot sword or a shield that'd cover nearly half of your body. And those two weapons were obviously shown to be decisively lethal because of the required strength and mass.

For the sole reason that the Samurai were confined to the islands of Japan, perfecting the art of slaying other Samurai and whoever confronted their daimyo, and for the sole reason that the Vikings traveled from Canada to Baghdad and slew every culture they encountered without looking back, I think the Viking should have won.

I still feel the samurai would lose more often, just the force behind the vikings blows, the fact that the samurai's club broke along with the sheild and the fact that the chain mail is ment for a cutting weapon is enough for me.

They never address why they used such a large and unrealistic weapon for the Samurai. The Kanabo was more a spiritual weapon, wielded by /very few/ samurai, it was meant to inspire fear, or awe, its use as a weapon was limited because of its size and weight. They said that in the Sword and Shield in the simulation would have been used together, they just had to test them separately, well thats fine, but why didn't they give the Viking a fourth weapon since they knew they were essentially giving the Viking a Shield and three weapons to the Samurai three weapons and Mythological Club of the Oni? Why didn't they address that Tetsuro Shigematsu was not a Samurai Expert, but a Samurai Decedent. He's a Playwright, Poet, Radio Broadcaster, and he went to japan to studied BUTOH DANCE. Which i might note "typically involves playful and grotesque imagery, taboo topics, extreme or absurd environments, and is traditionally "performed" in white-body makeup with slow hyper-controlled motion, with or without an audience." This aftermath answers a few questions, but it leaves more unanswered. I noticed the axe discrepancy when the "Viking with an Axe to Grind" video was first put up, I commented on it back then. Still no answer as to why. You showed a Dane axe when you were showing off weapons. Then you used a regular axe in your test against test dummy. Thats going to throw off your tests. I love this show, but I prefer accuracy in my warrior vs warrior combat.

There's still a few things that need further explanation.
1. No Samurai in their right mind would or could use a Kanabo, that would be a slow weapon for someone like ME and I'm big and strong by Viking standards. Samuai would probably use a Tanto (Dagger) instead.
2. The Katana getting 137 kills is bullshit, the Katana is completely ineffective against chainmail and is completely ineffective against the shield, if you watch more of Thrand's videos, you will see a real Katana going into the shield, it gets stuck, the Viking disarms him, game over.
3. The Samurai would've used a Yari instead of a Naginata, they're similar but a Yari has a longer reach and has a straight blade making it much more effective against chainmail.
4. No Viking would run up with two spears, a Viking always has his shield in hand, he'd chuck one, the guy who looked like a drunk lumberjack was a tard.

Wow, this aftermath was pretty bad. I feel like they avoided so many questions and only chose stupid ones to answer.
Once again. Why was the Samurai given a kanabo? The kanabo was rarely, if ever, used by Samurai.
And once again, why didn't the Vikings have their bows? Their bows were even more common than their swords, based on archeological finds. The Viking had equal long-range capabilities as the Samurai.
If you take away the unfair advantage given to the Samurai by both their Yumi and the kanabo, the Viking was the real victor.
As for Tetsuru Shigematsu, yeah, what he said was completely idiotic, but he's just a comedian and trying to be funny.
Still though, if the historical accuracy on this show is going to remain THIS bad, I'd prefer if there wasn't a second season.

Seems like all the trash-talking was just an act. Some pretty good actors, too. There appeared to be a conscious effort on both sides to add insult to injury during the show, but here, no hard feelings. Strange. Is the whole thing scripted? Do they do the tests first and then tack on the dialogue after they've had a chance to write it? Just seems that a seriously offended person wouldn't be as carefree.

That samauri guy is a douchebag. The samuri sucked. The only people samauri fought were other samauri. Their weapons are not practical. I would love to see the samuri vs almost any of the other western warriors fetured on the show such as the knight, spartan, pirate, apache, william walace or shaka zulu. They all had one thing in common, simple and practical weapons. A sheild and a sword/spear is the most successful hand to hand weapon combonation in pre gunpowder history.

They didn't test true Samurai armor! It wasn't "steel plates" it was leather with very thin steel plates over it. The armor was very lightwieght and only good against japanese weapons. They also failed to say that Samurai only fiught 1 group of people: other Samurai. The average Samurai was about 5'2 whearas the average viking was about 5'10-6 feet. The armor would protect against slashes, but the heavy iron weapons of the Viking would crush the armor in no time. And who would swing an axe at the thickest partof the body!? Seriously??? I'd rather swing at the ribs or the shoulder. Both places are covered only by leather! The axe would go thru no problem! Even IF it didn't, broken ribs and collar-bone equals a heavily weakened Samurai! I think there were mistakes on both sides, and this episode should have been re-done. We SAW the Katana unable to pierce chainmail. The same would ahve been the case with the Naginata, at least the slashing motion.

As a Martial Artist, I would like to congratulate the team to Deadliest Warrior. There ways to produce data with what have is truly incredible.
Now, what i want to see, and so does many, many people, is that you pit the previous warriors against previous warriors, but with different weapons.
Also the Ninja vs. Spartan... Ninja should have won but the ninja team choose a worthless selection of weapons... why don't they watch some Naruto for god sake... I am not dissing the Spartan, because they are truly a deadly warrior, but if I would have chosen the ninjas weapons I would have chosen the Ninjato (standard ninja weapon), the Shuriken (standard throwing weapon), Black Eggs (It was really cool weapon), But I would have chosen the Tiger claw (preferably the 7-12 inch ones), and the Throwing spikes (because they are a weapon that can target vital organs, nerve points, and crippling points with pin point accuracy).
There are also some points I would like to point out, (Taliban vs IRA) if you see a bomb next to you and its going tick tick, you don't stand there you run like your on fire or something!!!!!
That's all my comments for now...

facts being facts the vikings were not the greatest one on one warriors. They lost. Sorry viking fans but those are the facts of the show. So while they may be great warriors they just are not the greatest. So far the greatest without the use of gunpowder are the apache, samurai, spartan, william wallace, and the others that actually won there fight. Sorry, but those are the facts of the show and cant be disputed. The show seems to be completely without bias, they just enter in the factual results they get from there tests and the computer spits out the results. The people that are putting together the shows are about 98-99% accurate about the warrior they are representing. So the fact that someone points out the viking had the wrong color on or someother pointless detail would not change the outcome of the fight. The show is really accurate, sorry someone has to lose but its the way it has to be. The samurai were just better one on one fighters.
