And to YellowFlash, Barry is a semi-recurring member of the Deadliest Warrior crew. He's also got various ranges of expertise, being a former Green Beret, Spartan Historian, Greek Weapons Handler, etc... so he's not just the 'spartan guy' and would likely have a credited point of view to offer to the Aftermath's discussions.

i wanted to know more about the ballistic gel torsos. how well do they compare to real human torso? and if they simulate a human body so well, do you use them for every weapon (are they expensive)? if so, why do you guys use other things, like animal ribs and pigs. a dead animal can react very differently to something like a blunt weapon or sword, because bones are more flexible when the mind doesn't have control or reaction over them. im pretty sure a lot of people were wondering about the gel dummies too.

If the Blood street gang were to go on Deadliest Warrior, what weapons do you all think they would they bring? Also, seeing as the gladiator has no armor covering their chests, I can't believe anyone could think they would win. I mean seriously; bow and arrow against flesh is not a good thing. Even with that shield, come on, the little armor he did have was not that useful in comparison to the amazing speed of the Apache's killing techniques. I mean seriously, four kills with knives in four seconds is unbelievable. Great Aftermath guys! Can't wait for Samurai vs. Viking, or season two!
P.S.

like it or not, this outcome was as it should have been. This is not a fight of man vs man as much as it is a fight of free man vs slave. The Apache has such an awesome motivation advantage that the gladiator will win only via luck. Typical gladiator lives to fight another day & remains a slave, only to die another day. The Apache fights to preserve his freedom so he can make another baby & kill another trespasser. Die another day? Yes, he will, but he will die free. There is a huge difference in motivation here.

I don't like how you made the fight. You made the viking dumb and slow. They weren't they were deadly warriors who killed hundreds a day,and about a thousand a week. Samuries weren't too deadly they were more like body guards who killed about 10 kills maximum a day. And maybe 50 a week if they were lucky.Vikings should have won!

Very good Aftermath, worth the wait. And yes... the thought of Chuck Lidell with a tomahawk scares me...
A question pertaining to Viking vs. Samurai. During the kanabo vs. shield test, the direction of the strike from the kanabo was perpendicular to the shield's studded crossbars. Unless the crossbars are there for another reason, didn't they help insulate the shock from the weapon? Surely, a weapon as heavy as the kanabo would have done more damage to the shield (maybe shattering it) if the shield was rotated a bit? Are subtle defensive mecahnism like this factored into the data collected?

i think that in viking vs samurai, the match was unfair for the viking.
obviously, the samurai bow contributed to major, if not most kills, for the samurai.
had the viking had used the bow instead of the shield as a weapon, the outcome would've been different. viking would've won and deserves a rematch. the longbow should be used in place of the spears, and the spears in place of the shield(special weapons, i think it was?).

I can see how you might say the Gladiator would lose, but the shield question is still highly relevant, and the one I most expected to hear explained here.
Now the next one will have more to answer for. It might look accurate to some, but the more research I do, the more wrong it seems. I think the problem with the Samurai and Viking was their apples to oranges comparison. It forces them to refrain from comparing similar weapons, such as bow against bow. That means one side inevitably gets literally shafted, because one side is forced to use a ranged weapon other than the bow, and we all know the bow was the best one until the gun.
So the Samurai gets his Yumi, but the Viking, instead of a yew bow of comparable power, gets what is really a medium ranged weapon. One versatile enough to throw, granted, but still a medium-ranged weapon. Likewise, since the Viking had a spear, the Samurai could not use his Yari, even though it would be a common weapon, and actually would have been one of the few Samurai weapons I would expect to be consistently effective on mail, though like all of the Samurai's weapons, it would still be confounded by the shield.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I noticed the shield in the show was not angled for deflection (Something easy to do against a slow weapon) and had no hide stretched over it, though it was very common. Don't think the hide makes a difference? Decide for yourself with your own eyes.

the samurai is a warrior on horseback their art was the way of the Horse and the Bow but we dint see that did we ? we saw him wield a club he never used the kanabo and had no art form for it all till modern era and use a naginata not a yari his primary weapon other than the Bow.
what can we expect we had a comedian and a stuntman choreographer representing them :P Plus he dint have plate till late century and if he was wearing plate not lamellar armor he would have a had a gun most likely in that late century as well for he would have not been from the period they gave weapons to him from . Also any helm you test from almost any century made from steel can not be cut through at all viking or samurai so test the samurai helm at that high wrong angle proved nothing about body armor here's a video

a word about calling all vikings raiders why it is offensive is most where merchants and settlers but some where raiders this is true.villages where raided by Vikingr pirates not by upstanding Scandinavians. Their Laws prevented them from attacking farmers, peasants, merchants, merchant ships, women and children .Basically you had to be a warrior to be killed are appear to be. But they where not Christian early era and there where no laws preventing attacking other peoples religions churches or holy places which they did not want Christianity to take over their country and those places where full of loot and poorly guarded.

I wonder why no one ever addressed the question of bow vs. sling. Many people seemed very ready to dismiss slings as inferior to bows, but from the information I've been able to dig up, slings were used at least as long as bows, and were considered every bit as lethal. At the ranges the tests appear to discuss, a sling bullet could certainly be lethal, and would be almost impossible to dodge as it would be nearly invisible in flight. I find it hard to believe that a weapon deemed so effective as to have been used all over the world, wielded against an unarmoured opponent by a proficient combatant, would receive the tiny number of kills it did (I think 2, but I can't recall).

for one of the next seasons, they should set it up tournament style with past warriors. I know I'd be interested in seeing who won. I know that the pre-fight weapons science would cause a problem, as nobody would want to see it over and over, but for the warriors who make it past the first round, they could do all kinds of neat other stuff like test heavy weapons like trebuchet, cannons, and ballistae. also, instead of heavy weapons, you could test battle formations, give the warrior horses or just show histories. some people would be pretty screwed by their lack of technology but that is part of being the deadliest warrior. instead of single man or squad combat you could put all 1000 men out at the same time. Just imagine what kind of damage a catapult, boiling oil, a cannon, or a trampling elephant (for persians) would cause to those ballistic gel test dummies. you could even test extreme defenses like moats, trenches, portable cover, castle walls, and ship hulls. the whole pre fight would be testing how many ballista shots are required to sink a ship, kill an elephant or break up a well laid phalanx. home court would be defending and get defense, travellers would get extra offense. I know I would watch that

i would have liked to hear more why the bow was so effective in both Apache vs Gladiator and Viking vs Samurai becuase in a one on one dual its pretty predictable were an arrow is being shot and when your appoint has a shield it drastically lowers the chace to hit the kill zone of the chest and head (since both also had helmets) leaving only the legs open which most diffently would not be a kill shot even thou the bow is the deadliest weapon on the battle field that is only becuase war is confusing its no as easy to block arrows coming from multply places at the same time as it is to block one

I have to agree about the shields and bows. From the bow videos it looked obvious where they were going to shoot, plus add aim time, and the entire quiver of arrows is likely to end up in a shield. also, you have to consider reflexes. they said that it takes about 1\4 seconds to even process that something is coming at you and defend yourself. this makes sense. When learninig a new instrument, you have to think of every note, but as you progress, what took 3 seconds now takes half a second. likewise, these aren't novices, they are proffessional warriors, and their reflexes will quickly become faster than 1\4 seconds. these will become faster still as they reach the total uncocious level of muscle memory all proffesionals reach. soon, a warrior would have to think about blocking an arrow about as much as they think about walking. still, I can not deny that a sneak attack is an instant kill.

I don't think we've sufficiently addressed the issue of the bow. The Apache bow by the show's instruments shows 95 fps. this is on par with a modern child's bow. The English longbow would be closer to 65 lbs at 270 -300 fps and would pierce armor. Of the Apache arrows shot only one pierced the rib cage. Also the Apache at this time were using the pinch grip - not the three finger common with the English. Apache bows draw weight was typcally 25 lbs. - the max for the pinch grip. We're talking about a very slow arrow (possibly 60 mph) that most little leaguers could catch with their glove. Seriously, a gladiator could easily catch a full quiver in his shield. The Apache knife and tomahawk are impressive but the bow is over-rated and much lower lethality than suggested - unless you count dying from an infection a week later.

Thrand:
Please Explain To Me Then How The Viking Chainmail is going to DEFEND against thrusting or piercing attacks from the Samurai Swords(Katana, Wagazashi, and Tanto)? The experts left out that test, and needless to say, samurai fans have not complained like your crew is. The Chainmail defended well against the slashing strikes or cuts from the Katana, but as we saw in the William Wallace and Shaka Zulu episode, Chainmail doesn't protect very well against steel blades used for piercing and stabbing period. The Katana is much stronger and forged with high grade, tempered carbon steel, than let's say the Ikwa spear that Shaka Zulu used in the episode. Even though this test was not shown in the Viking v Samurai episode (but in Shaka's episode), I predict very similar results if a Viking were to get stabbed repeatedly or pierced multiple times with a Katana from a Samurai.
We can all agree to disagree, but to be honest Thrand, the matter in which you are posting and voicing your "expert" opinions seems to be: 1) Biased, and 2) Immature
Also, the outcome was very very close, with the Viking almost winning(key word almost). Perhaps, it can also be said that it was too close to call for a definitive outcome, but it seems that you and your team would be unhappy with that outcome.
