Everything looks so exagerated. Okay, spartan soldiers were known as very strong and agile, but it almoust looks like they have divine powers in this movie. Though the trailer looks very impressive, I wonder what those ugly monsters have to do in it? Lord of the Rings meets Troje?

I recall watching a history channel special, where they mentioned an army of 10,000 spartans holding off hundreds of thouses of invaders (maybe thats what this storys based off of?). They wernt incredibly extrodinary as individuals, but in groups they were almost invincible.

->dc7407. You're thinking the battle of Thermopylae. It was 300 Spartans fighting the 2million man Persian army. They ended up killing tens of thousands of Persians over a couple days before dying off - only two survived and were in horrible condition.

Defence for independence to a great army cause most brutal war scenes. One has no chance and nothing to loose, one has great army with passion and anger. It is cliche.Myths always are cliche.Muscles are cliche.Intelligence is cliche.Music is cliche.Cliche is cliche but if you always say cliche. However if you give the reason of the fight for independence and the reaseon of the passion,in one sentence: `madness...this is Sparta`,it is enough for me to understand the quality of the film.I am sure that I am gonna watch this film with great enjoy.

What an incredible acting range Gerry Butler has, from "Attila" to "Marek" in Timeline, to the Phantom", to the "Stranger" in Dear Frankie to "Beowulf" to "Leonidas" in 300!(With other roles thrown in along the way)Wow, it will be interesting to see what he does next. He is definitely convincing as the leader of the Spartans. This movie is so unique, compared to the cookie cutter movie formats that Hollywood throws out. If the movie is as good as the trailer suggests, it will be a big hit. But I wonder if the "Oscar Gods" will have the guts to give it the attention that it deserves! Hoodin

This is of course the retelling of the battle of thermopylae where 300 spartans stonewalled and were able to stave off the persians led by xerxes. They were only defeated by one traitor greek who showed the persians a secret path leading towards the spartans' back. Their death roused all greeks to unite as one and finally defeated the persians. Thus rose the idea of democracy, an ideal to which we all are enjoying today. The essence of the story is there but the cinematics are all hollywood, full of sfx! But who cares, this movie will surely rock!

the film portrays the battle of thermopylae were 300 Spartans and about 5000 allies held against the might of the Persian Empire led by God Emperor Xerxes with an army of 1000000 plus. They were betrayed by Efialtes a Greek traitor whose name now means Nightmare in Greek and all their allies left to join the main Greek force leaving the Spartans behind with Leonidas. They faced the Percians alone until they fell to the last mainly by arrow fire.In Thermopylae after the battle a monument was erected (it still exists today) that states "Look and announce stranger passing by that here true to the ancient vows we lie"Of course i will watch the movie although it is based on Miller's comic and not actual events.

This is fictional comic book tale not REAL HISTORY
In Sparta (a Greek city-state) boys were taken from their mothers at age seven to live with other boys and begin their military training. At age 12 they were paired with an older single man (22-25 years old) who became their teacher, mentor and lover. The problem the Spartans had was when it came time for men to be married they didn't want to leave their male partners.
To make it easier for her husband to have sex with her on their wedding night the bride would shave her head and wear the clothes of a young boy. Her husband would leave his male lover, come to be with his wife, and then return to his male lover. Some men only took a couple of days before they moved in with their wife, but others took years or never made the transition to normal sexual relations.
The ancient Greeks were more familiar with long term homosexual relationships than we are today. So the argument that things have changed, and homosexuality as it exists today is a new thing, has no historical basis in fact.
Homosexuality has always existed in all cultures throughout time. Homosexuality was a normal and accepted practice in Greek culture for hundreds of years. If God was waiting until there was a culture that accepted homosexuality before revealing that homsexuality was acceptable, ancient Greece was the time and place to do it.
here's some paintings that has been found all over sparta and greec

PURE escaptist -very little historic fact and very much like a moving comic book -teenagers will like it, but not fit for younger (as very violent and gory) -or for that matter more mature minds -edges on propaganda especially at this time in history today with the tensions in the middle east and Persian Gulf.
Very much "Greek Democracy takes on the heathen"
