Sam(Sean Penn), a mentally handicapped employee of Starbucks with a Beatles fetish, has an eight-year-old daughter(Dakota Fanning). His daughter has surpassed his mental ability, which has marked him as an incompetent father, aside from the fact that he has successfully cared for a small child alone for eight years. Through a quirk of fate, high-powered attorney Michelle Pfeiffer ends up taking his case. It's a tear-jerker with a lot of heart.
