Shooter turns up at Mort's wilderness cabin unannounced and claims that Mort has stolen his story from him. Mort refuses the manuscript that Shooter claims is plagiarized and presses upon Mort.
Mort, a writer (Johnny Depp) retreats to the country after a depressing divorce, but he's hounded by a psycho "fan" (John Turturro) who claims Mort plagiarized his work. Things get stranger still when Mort hires a detective (Charles Dutton) to investigate the allegations, as well as a series of odd coincidences.
