urban beat

Interesting abstract audio-visual piece playing on the pulse and dynamics of an urban landscape (London).
urban beat tries to express the rhythm and energy of rushing through the city and the buildings, cars, trains and people that make it function. the piece is made up of mostly digital stills, which have been layered and sequenced. using stills from a digital slr camera allows for crisp high quality visuals that could not be attained using dv footage. it also gives the clips an unusual feel as the stills are captured at unregular intervals to give a jagged edge to the work. all the different components are layered together and mixed up to create strange situations like the clouds in the bus-stop billboard as night time traffic rushes past or the metal reflection of traffic composited over the river.the film comes to life with the audio accompaniment. bass hits as we travel under a bridge on the thames, and a view of a tower block is thrown up on screen. the sound of a record on a turntable when the side has finished and is left to play used to suggest the noise of a train. maracas play as the leaves shake. traffic sounds buzz as cars stop and start on the road. weird electronic glitches to tell of the bustle of the metropolis as clouds rush over the cityscape.
