The directors talk about their use of allusion to other films, as well as the playful creative working environment of Madagascar.
The animals of the Central Park Zoo live peaceful, contented lives--except for the penguins, that is. Realizing they're just prisoners in a cage, the tuxedoed birds make a break for freedom and inspire a zebra with big dreams to follow them.
After the escape, some of the more rational animals also jump the walls in a brave attempt to bring their friends back home, causing a riot in Manhattan.
