Ben Vanderford's Hoax Decapitation

Last August, Ben Vanderford was seen being decapitated on a tape which was quickly picked up by an Islamic website and then disseminated around the net and western media. The fact that the entire event was staged by a group of San Francisco friends was only made apparent when Reuters showed up at Ben's apartment complex. For his side, Ben faulted the mass media for publicizing the stunt without first verifying that the video was genuine. Was Ben's act one of media criticism or just a publicity stunt in very poor taste?
