Perhaps best known as the father of the chronograph, George Graham was also the brains behind inventions such as the dead-beat cylinder escapement, the first wall chronograph and the mercury pendulum. Commissioned by the Greenwich Royal Observatory to create the Master Clock used by astronomers, he became the first great eighteenth century clock-maker to be admitted to the Royal Society.
