Mamoru and Yuji work at a plant that manufactures the premoistened napkins available at chi-chi restaurants. As a respite from this monotonous existence, Mamoru keeps jellyfish as pets, whose untouchable nature he wholly identifies with. Yuji is fascinated by Mamoru, and when Mamoru kills his boss, Yuji takes over caring for the jellyfish and becomes close to Mamoru's father. Somehow, by stepping into Mamoru's shoes, Yuji moves past the alienation they both felt into real life.
