In Chattanooga, TN, Officer Pendergrass climbs onto the roof of a house to search for a packet of drugs that a suspect allegedly tossed during a brief chase.

>> OFFICER DERRICK PENDERGRASS:

Being a martial artist really

helps me out here in the field.

I practice as much as I can when

I'm not at work, so...

It keeps me stretched out, keeps

me flexible, quicker to move.

People get out here, they try

to... duck off on us, run or

something.

I feel like I'm kind of got an

advantage on them.

I'm used to that sort of stuff.

I'm gonna roll up on this house.

A lot of known narcotic

activity.

People like to hang out in front

of the house.

They'll just... sell it.

Got a Cadillac right...

Yeah, we got one getting...

All right, he's running.

( tires screech )

Come here, man.

Five break. I got one running.

>> ( over radio ): What's your

location?

>> PENDERGRASS: South 14th

Street.

Get on the ground.

>> I didn't...

>> PENDERGRASS: Get on the

ground!

Get...

>> What's up, man?

You don't need to do all that,

man.

>> PENDERGRASS: Give me your

hand.

Give me your hand!

>> ( speaks indistinctly )

>> PENDERGRASS: Give me your

hand!

>> You're on my damn back, man.

>> PENDERGRASS: Yep.

( dog barking )

( man groans )

>> What you doing, man?

>> PENDERGRASS: Five.

East 14th. In custody.

Stand up. Come on.

>> Let me get up.

Wait a minute.

>> PENDERGRASS: I'm trying to

help you up.

>> Uh-uh, hold up, hold up.

>> PENDERGRASS: You got your

feet underneath you.

Let's go.

>> Hold up, man...

>> PENDERGRASS: On your feet.

Walk.

>> I didn't do nothing, man.

( dog continues barking )

>> PENDERGRASS: Let's find out

who you are and find out what's

going on, man.

>> Nothing, nothing.

>> PENDERGRASS: Walk over to my

car.

>> Why you got to do all that,

man?

>> PENDERGRASS ( panting ): All

right, just stay... right there.

Is this your car?

>> ( inaudible )

>> PENDERGRASS: Is this your

car?

>> Yeah.

>> PENDERGRASS: You got any ID

on you?

>> It's in my right pocket.

>> PENDERGRASS: Look, do me a

favor and just keep your hands

out.

Don't be reaching for nothing,

all right?

>> All right.

>> PENDERGRASS: You got warrants

on you, don't you?

>> Who?

>> PENDERGRASS: You.

>> Not no... I been a good boy.

>> PENDERGRASS: Come off this

car one more time.

All right?

>> Mm-hmm.

>> PENDERGRASS: If you've been a

good boy, why were you running?

>> Messing with you, man.

>> PENDERGRASS: Messing with me?

>> That's all, dude.

>> PENDERGRASS: That's about the

most brainiac thing I've ever

heard.

>> That's it, man.

I ain't got nothing...

Been a good guy.

>> PENDERGRASS: Good guy.

>> Yep.

Want me to take them off?

>> PENDERGRASS: Nope.

Just want you to stand still.

( indistinct talking )

Right up here on top of the

roof.

Stay there with him.

You got a ladder, ma'am?

>> ( speaks indistinctly )

>> PENDERGRASS: Thank you,

ma'am.

( dog barking )

Got pointed out, we got a, uh...

Looks like it might be a baggie.

We got a lot of marijuana sold

in this area.

It's tossed up on the roof, and

it's conveniently right here

through the area where he could

have very easily overhand tossed

it.

So I'm trying to find a way up

onto the roof.

( inaudible radio transmission)

>> OFFICER PETER MILLER: Get up

there.

( inaudible radio transmission)

( dog barking )

>> ( over radio ): He's in

custody.

Bringing a ladder here on 14th

Street.

>> MILLER: There you go.

>> PENDERGRASS: This might be it

right here.

'Cause he ran from me.

He come upside the house... and,

uh... it looks like he kind of

tossed something.

>> MILLER: That's a good...

right there.

>> PENDERGRASS: We got a, uh...

good little amount of rocks in

here.

It's crack, man.

Looks good, too.

It's not...

>> MILLER: Let's see.

>> PENDERGRASS: It's good and

solid.

It's not porous or anything.

>> MILLER: Yeah, he's got about

ten in there.

Ten, 12...

>> PENDERGRASS: Good little

baggie.

>> MILLER: Good job.

>> PENDERGRASS: We, uh... man,

we looked everywhere for this.

'Cause I thought at first...

when I first started chasing

after him, I thought I'd been

caught by the magnet, going

after the wrong person, 'cause

the others stayed at the car.

>> MILLER: Right.

>> PENDERGRASS: And then I get

around back here, and I thought

he might've tossed it for the

dog for lunch, so... I didn't

know, man.

I thought I'd lost it for sure,

but...

>> MILLER: It's that little

reflection that drug has.

>> PENDERGRASS: Yeah.

Good little bag.

>> Yeah. Good job.

>> PENDERGRASS: William.

>> Yeah?

>> PENDERGRASS: Bad day for you.

>> Huh?

>> PENDERGRASS: Bad day for you.

That little overhead toss I saw

while you was running...

>> Huh?

>> PENDERGRASS: Little overhead

toss I saw while you was

running.

>> While I was running?

>> PENDERGRASS: Yeah.

We're gonna go with this one,

all right?

>> That ain't mine.

>> PENDERGRASS: Ain't nobody

running from the police for no

reason.

>> I'm gonna beat it anyway.

It ain't mine.

>> PENDERGRASS: That's cool.

>> All right.

>> PENDERGRASS: Have a good one.

All right.

Works for me.

>> SERGEANT LEE ATKINS: I knew

it when it wasn't on the ground,

wasn't around that doghouse, I

said... usually they throw it up

on the roof.

>> PENDERGRASS: Yeah.

That's a good job, man.

Good eyes.

I appreciate that.

>> ATKINS: I saw something

glitter when I walked over here.

That's it.

>> PENDERGRASS: I appreciate it,

man.

'Cause that was...

>> ATKINS: I've had several

times got out with people and

they'll throw their stuff on the

roof 'cause most of the time

they know police don't have

access to the roofs, and you

have to call for a ladder and...

>> MILLER: We saw the... the

toss when he was running.

>> ATKINS: Yeah. You had to have

a ladder or something to get on

the roof, and a lot of times

they'll throw it and come back

later and get it if you don't

find it.

>> PENDERGRASS: Good deal.

Let's get him down to 601 and

get back out here and do it

again.

>> ATKINS: That's the way

we do it.
