Erin Gruwell (Hilary Swank), a teacher, tries to contain the chaos in her own classroom when she hears loud noises in the yard. She goes out and find that a huge crowd has gathered to watch two boys and two girls in fistfights.

A dedicated California teacher finds a way to unite her disadvantaged, racially divided students and to improve their grasp of academics by having them keep journals about their violent, troubled lives.
