The events surrounding the 1972 break-in to the Democratic Party headquarters led to perhaps the most celebrated work of investigative journalism in American history and shook a presidency to its foundations. In his adaptation of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's best-selling account of those events, Alan Pakula has created a film that takes its place among such important conspiracy dramas as THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. Two hungry young reporters team up on what at first appears to be a minor story but soon grows into a complicated web of intrigue and secrecy that just might involve the highest levels of government. Exceptional performances by Robert Redford (as Woodward) and Dustin Hoffman (as Bernstein) are complemented by Jason Robards as the dubious but supportive executive editor and Hal Holbrook's celebrated characterization of Deep Throat. The pacing of the film is a joy to behold, inviting the viewer to track down the mystery right alongside the stars.
