Women Facing War - Mariatu
Posted on: September 19, 2006 | Views: | Comment
The civil war was cruel to Mariatu. When armed men attacked her parents' farm, they singled her out for special attention. She begged, but it was no use. The 13-year old would rather have died, but they cut off her hands instead.
Mariatu now lives in a centre for people who were maimed in the war. She has her grandmother to help her with all her daily activities. But the young girl cannot sleep. She keeps replaying those scenes in her head. Mariatu longs to get married, but despairs of finding a man who wants a woman with no hands. More short films at ICRC's Women at War.
