As I walked across the Great Wall, my cultural attache Tony took a moment to explain the significance of Deng Xiaoping in China's development. After Chairman Mao's death in 1976, Deng Xiaoping began a series of open reform policies with the West that are credited for making the Chinese economy into the fastest growing in the world. Deng Xiaoping, who studied abroad in France, understood that for China to reemerge as a world power, it would have to participate in the global economy.
