Tonight on SPIKE

  •

What will you do when disaster strikes? Spike TV's new original series Surviving Disaster, led by Navy SEAL Cade Courtley, vividly takes viewers through catastrophic scenarios and arms them with the knowledge needed to survive the unthinkable. Courtley tackles worst-case scenarios and equips viewers with the practical information needed to save their own lives and the lives of their loved ones. Whether the threat is natural or man-made or on a national or personal level, Courtley speaks directly to the viewers and guides them through a comprehensive, step-by-step process to not only survive the big picture disaster, but endure the many dangerous obstacles that may occur within each catastrophic event. While leading viewers out of danger, Courtley not only provides helpful tips and hands-on instruction, but swiftly points out common misconceptions and fatal mistakes. Unlike any other series, Surviving Disaster may actually save lives by providing actions that anyone can perform.

Very enjoyable; we really liked the show and found it very informative. We appreciated the realism, research and the applicability of everything we saw. I will be glad for what I learned should, God forbid, I ever find myself in that situation. Keep up the good work, we've got you dialed in. A Veteran of SPECWARGRU 2.

Where were the police cars in the hijacking episode? Speaking of which, shouldn't they be keeping an eye on them lest they escape?

Personally, they should've killed them off so they longer appear as a threat.

    Cade,

I was able to enjoy your show last night. Fire in a high rise is every firefighters worst fear, you gave some great information such as demonstrating that people can breach walls to escape the flames and smoke. You also gave some very bad information, such as breaking a high rise window. The center of the window is the worse place to strike. In fact if you were to strike a window in the center it will give and adsorb the impact. This is true for most windows including car windows. Flash Over is when all items in a room as well as the charged smoke in the room reach their flash point. When the coworker was burned and you were attempting to treat his burns every one would be in danger. the fire in that small office would not have put it self out in fact it would be in free burn. It is also important for some one in your group to call 911 and inform them of where you are at, this is important because firefighters may inform you to stay where you are so a rescue can be attempted. If you must move it is important to update the 911 operator. Texting a coworker is an important thought after you have contacted 911. The statement that no one will hear you over the flames is a false statement if that were the case every one in your group would being burned,
I normally do not pick apart a T.V. show but in this cause people watch it to retain information in case they have to use it one day.

Best of luck on your future shows.

    Steve

What happened to the repeats? I missed the Fire episode, it was schedule to be repeated but it's no longer on the guide! Now I have to wait 3 more weeks in matter to watch it from this web site...

Other than the messed up repeat, great show! I like this one much better than Survivor Man as this one is about real life scenario.

By the way, I hope that there will be an episode about how to prepare for all type of disasters.

I find myself addicted and conflicted! I feel as though I NEED to watch the show 'just in case' - and at the same time I wondering if I'm jinxing myself? Ha, but in any case I do like watching it, but I wish he took kids into consideration during his narration..... I was wondering how the heck would I cross that river during the hurricane show with her. Hopefully I'll never need to know! *knocks on wood*

This show is ridiculous. The ideas are usually more dangerous then an alternative. An example is the home invasion. The advice is to attack someone who is robbing you rather then just getting out of the house and calling the cops. And then it goes into trained people with night vision and everything; for all the bank managers out there this advice is fine for everyone else its pointless. Also in the hurricane episode it shows them crossing a river. You are never supposed to cross water during a storm, rushing water is one of the most dangerous parts of a hurricane. Oh and military crawling so you don't get hit by stuff flying around? yeah much better to be outside for 10 min rather then running for 15 seconds. This show is going to get more people killed then it will help.

Home invasion ...Why should I plan my defense of a home invasion and include 2 other grown men to back me up . Should I be having dinner partys everynight just incase. It says this a highly realistic simulation of a worst case scenario . All information is based on extensive research....? well first having two buddy's to help me subdue the robbers one isn't realistic nor is it the worst case it would actually be the best case. So tell me how to do it with me a 6'4" 240 lbs man and my 5'9" 120 lb girl friend that would be a helpfull show. lastly I want to see this extensive research of house being robbed and the robbers get taken out by a highly trained crew of 3

Wow, folks, just calm down. I find it ridiculous that people are criticizing and complaining that the episodes aren't specific enough - what if I have kids? What if I have my elderly parents? What about pets? What if I'm handicapped? What if I'm peeing? Yes, those are all legitimate concerns but no show can possibly show every single possible scenario. Take what you can from the show, and use your God-given common sense. The point of the show is to remind people to fight to survive, and not just to lay down and call it quits, no matter how dire the situation. Ultimately, your survival is up to you - how you prepare for it and how to respond in crises. And furthermore, I highly doubt any of the comments here are from experts in the given fields portrayed in the episodes. They're giving us alternatives and options we can use to survive should such situations arise - it's not saying, "this is what you must do!" And I'm pretty sure the people behind the show did their homework - God knows how Americans love to sue everything and everyone and they would be in a heap of dung if they dispensed dangerous information. And hence the disclaimers at the beginning and throughout the episodes. I agree that some of the things shown and taught I would have a very difficult time pulling off, but it's still all very informative. What other show can you think of that actually gives practical advice on surviving highly plausible situations? And God forbid if I was ever faced with disaster, I'd pray to have Cade Courtley there with me.

I thought there was some good information put out on the "Home Invasion" show. However, I do have a problem with the mass broadcasting of some of the tactics used either to perform or combat this growing problem. I think it could have been done without giving everyone, including scum bags, a quick class on how to counter a home invasion. Over all though, not a bad show.

The show is incredible and intense, week after week. Can't think of a better host than Cade Courtley who's actually been there, done that, and probably has the scars to prove it. No, not every situation is likely; I live in South Texas and NOT going to have an avalanche any time soon BUT better to have information and never use it than to need it and never have it. Spike, you ROCK!

Great show, as said above, use your own common sense of the scenarios! It's impossible to meet everyones' situation, but it shows you options for many different types of scenarios. At first I thought he was kinda harsh with his speaking to everyone, but you begin to realise in those moments someone with a stern voice, that knows what to do, and takes charge, people will follow! Sure there are alternate ways to get results as with anything in life, but he goes through hell and proves that it CAN be done! Anyone with major problems and complaints of the show are obviously not gathering the morals and big picture: stay calm, be resourceful, have a plan, and use your common sense!

PS: Today there are Hand held VHF marine radios that yes, are waterproof to 3 meters and float but they should always be tied to your body (as should all safety / survival gear).

Perhaps there should be a comments section for experts and the best ideas from viewers to enhance each show? Don't forget to seek the best experts advice before and during each production. Making even a great show better should always be the most primary mission.

Great Effects & lots of drama (made for TV) but the #1 job in any survival series was missed RE: Disaster at sea... sacrificing real survival information for drama,,, Examples: How to avoid the bad situation like drifting at sea for days. Answer not even mentioned: Have a hand held radio (with a spare fully charged battery). They can cost as little as $100 but can really save your life. Always have it on your person (we keep them on every person day & night when topside because they will save YOUR life)...

If you fall overboard you can see the ship much easier (day or night) than they can see you & YOU can direct them back to rescue you in the least amount of time possible. You can even call the ship's radio if you fell off and no one knew it thus alerting them ASAP... A DSC on your hand held radio sends your GPS position & message to the USCG & you can also call the helo (or passing boat) YOURSAELF when you see them passing by. Even without GPS or DSC in your hand held VHF marine radio, the USCG can use RDF (radio direction finding) to map your position and rapidly rescue you.

Part B of original post --- darn computers...

Wear life jackets at all times when topside or at least at the first sign of a bad situation. A light - non bulky - May West life Vest with personal survival gear attached to it (like pen flares etc) are great & you can wear them deflated (but on your body) when exiting a sinking boat... Good luck pulling life jackets on a line from a boat that is underwater.

ALWAYS have your life raft FULLY READY to go not at the last minute in a disaster. Do not use a broken piece of mirror in a life raft (use the safe signaling mirror that is packed into your survival life raft. A small hand pump water desalinator should also be pre-packed into your life raft although water desalinating in other ways are great tips it should be secondary to your "survival" water desalinator (already packed into your life raft). The raft should have been repaired & inflated (with the repair kit again, already packed in the life raft) vs allowed to remain deflated.

A mention of the junk floating loose in the DARK capsized boat is really life saving information. It is a good reason to ALWAYS keep EVERYTHING secured at all times (form bedding that could jam a cabin door shut to all cooking items etc). Even a loose coffee cup can become a deadly projectile in a violent boating situation turning it into a disaster vs just a bad situation. How to prevent or avoid or reduce the odds of a disaster is better than ONLY how to deal with it AFTER it strikes.

Part C of my original post:

Those are just a very few boating safety tips (in extreme brief) that I hope helps your great series mutate into the best survival series that it can be. The BEST,,, REAL,,, life saving information is the #1 thing any survival series should be all about and you can still have the drama. On the other hand, bad or even worse, wrong information can be very dangerous (deadly) and thus totally defeat the #1 mission of any safety / survival series as it could put people in even more danger than they would have otherwise been in.

Lets all make this great series truly the best it can be :-)
And Yes, Eunoia,,, I am a safety and survival expert.

Do you folks truly think that after a one hour TV show you will be able to do things that Navy SEALS, Army Special Forces and Rangers do? Some of the things shown will help people to survive. Will the average person get into a fire fight in a mall? If so when will they get the weapons training? Does everyone know how to operate an AK-47? Where will they learn tactics? I ask this because I was an Army Ranger. People without proper training should NOT engaage in military type scenarios, they will themselves or by action get people injured or killed. A one hour TV show does not make you an elite warrior. The host should know this, SEALS are not stupid. No operator is stupid nor would they risk innocent life. Stick to survival scenarios the average person could handle. You cannot turn someone into "Rambo" buy watching TV.

You know I see some comments on here and and they make me sick. Yes these are for the most part unlikely and hard to survive and of course a one hour show isn't enough to prepare for everything. That's not the point. This "oh well your just dead" "can't make you a warrior" mentality is terrible. The point is that in all likelihood you would be dead, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth trying or that there is no hope. These are scenarios where doing nothing will result in death anyway, no action taken could make matters much worse, and there is no reason that action can't make sense or be based at least somewhat on what a person SHOULD do. Thanks, I like the show.

A suspected terrorist, Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged today for conspiring with others to plot terrorist attacks on targets including U.S. shopping malls. The plan was to obtain automatic weapons and randomly shoot people in the malls, but it was not mentioned in the news which malls may have been targets. I don't know about anyone else, but I am going to watch the Shopping Day Disaster episode again as soon as it becomes available.

I really am so glad this show exists. Our country is a target - that was clear on 9/11 - we can't always prevent chaos that results from that....but any level of education - even if it only saves a few lives - is priceless. The one comment I'll never forgot in the doomsday show is "....you must assume you are on your own" - and - "the government is not responsible to save you".

Clearly I need to know how to save myself. Thank you to the people who do the research for this show. May it help as many people as possible.

This is a great show. One hour is never enough time to learn how to survive in anything let alone a disaster, but maybe it will get some people motivated to learn more on how to survive.

I have learned many things from the show and I hope I never have to use them.

The one thing to remember and it is stated in every show is that the government is not going to help you right away.

I LOVE this show. Thank you for making it. When can I buy the DVD set?? Do you need any extras? Spike should have a contest for walk-on roles. And and interactive game on facebook or something. That would be the best! I'm wracking my brain for more disaster scenarios; trapped on a deserted island? Lost in the desert? The rainforest? Wild animals escape from the zoo? flu pandemic outbreak? Buried alive? surviving in prison? I can't wait to see what SD will come up with!!

Thank you, I also love this show. Finally a 'Reality Show' that is meant to make people think instead of turning their brains into mush. Can't wait to see more episodes!!! Of course each scenario is not absolutely perfect but it sure makes you think about what could possibly happen. Too many of us have the -oh it won't happen to me-mentality.

Great host. Cade was also on the show "combat missions" from the early 00's. You can see it on youtube. Cade teaches staying calm, thinking clearly and always be making a plan on Surviving Disaster. These are the most important things you can do in any survival situation. My suggestions for future episodes are; -Riots or civil disturbances, -Outbreak and Quarantine, -Kidnapping in a foreign country, -Mass power blackout.
