PARAMOUNT NETWORK JOINS FORCES WITH SHAWN CARTER AND THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY FOR A GROUNDBREAKING DOCUMENTARY SERIES, “REST IN POWER: THE TRAYVON MARTIN STORY”

New York, NY, April 6, 2017 – Paramount Network, launching in January 2018, has teamed up with Shawn Carter and The Weinstein Company, for a landmark television event, “Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” based on the life and legacy of Trayvon Martin.

The six-part event series will go into production later this year and premiere on Paramount Network in 2018.  This marks the first new non-scripted series for Paramount Network, which is rebranding from its current name, Spike TV, next year.

This is the second partnership between Shawn Carter, The Weinstein Company and Paramount Network/Spike TV and The Cinemart as they teamed up for the critically-acclaimed and influential series, “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story,” that concluded last night.

Martin was an unarmed 17-year old high school student shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman, in the Florida community where they both lived. Zimmerman was acquitted on a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense, sparking protests and outrage worldwide.

We know this means a lot to this country. We continue to tell our story in order to unite people. We are very hopeful that this project will bring about a healthy and helpful conversation on the injustices that have divided society. That is also why we started the Trayvon Martin Foundation. In “Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin,” Trayvon Martin’s parents take readers beyond the news cycle with an account only they could give, the intimate story of a life tragically cut short and the rise of a movement to end similar injustices.

The original shows debuting during the first three months of 2018 will demonstrate the rebranded network’s commitment to reaching a wide viewership with provocative, compelling storytelling featuring top notch talent both in front and behind the camera.

AMERICAN WOMAN  

Starring Alicia Silverstone and Mena Suvari, this new half-hour series is inspired by the real-life upbringing of co-executive producer Kyle Richards (“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”). “American Woman” follows Bonnie (Silverstone) an unconventional mother struggling to raise her two daughters after leaving her husband amid the rise of second-wave feminism in the 70s.  With the help of her two best friends, Kathleen (Suvari) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels), these three women each discover their own brand of independence in a glamorous and ever-changing world reluctant to give it.

WACO 

The six-part event series “Waco” will reveal untold story exploring the true life details leading up to and chronicling the 51- day siege between the FBI, AFT and David Koresh’s spiritual sect, The Branch Davidians.  Told from several perspectives of those most intimately involved from both sides of the conflict, including surviving Branch Davidians which has never been shared on television before, is surprising in its stark contrast to the media narrative at the time and what is remembered of Waco almost 25 years later. The impressive cast includes Michael Shannon starring as lead FBI negotiator, Gary Noesner with the role of the infamous cult leader, David Koresh, to be played by Taylor Kitsch.   John Leguizamo, Paul Sparks, Rory Culkin and Andrea Riseborough round out the “Waco” cast.

HEATHERS 

Based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name, “Heathers” is an hour-long pitch-black comedy anthology set in the present day, as heroine Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox, “Under the Dome”) deals with a very different but equally vicious group of ‘Heathers.’ Also starring are James Scully as JD, Melanie Field (“Wicked” National Tour) as Heather Chandler, Brendan Scannell (“Funny or Die”) as Heather Duke, and Jasmine Mathews as Heather McNamara. Original “Heathers” cast member Shannen Doherty will guest star as a pivotal, unnamed character as well.

The latest installment in the critically-acclaimed “I Am” series from filmmaker Derik Murray focuses on the legendary American icon, Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrating the life and achievements of our country’s foremost civil rights leader, the two-hour documentary gives an insightful contemporary perspective of Dr. King structured around seminal events of the Civil Rights movement.

New York, New York, March 27, 2017 – Actors Andrea Riseborough, Rory Culkin, Paul Sparks and Shea Whigham have joined the cast of “Waco,” a six-part event series based on the gripping true story of the 51-day standoff that began with an ATF raid of a religious sect in Waco, Texas and resulted in a deadly fire.  The series will be produced by Weinstein Television and will air on Paramount Network in 2018.

Andrea Riseborough will play Judy, wife of Steve Schneider, who reluctantly sacrifices her marriage to show devotion to David Koresh.

Riseborough is an accomplished British stage and film actress.  Her film appearances include “Nocturnal Animals,” and “Birdman” among many others.  She will next be seen starring in “Battle of the Sexes,” “Burden,” “The Death of Stalin” and “Mindhorn.”  Riseborough’s television credits include roles in the critically acclaimed miniseries “National Treasure” and the Netflix series “Bloodline.” She is represented by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Independent Talent Group.

Rory Culkin will portray David Thibodeau, a young musician who joins David Koresh’s band. Though initially reluctant to join Koresh, he eventually undergoes a dramatic evolution from an agnostic to a true believer.

Culkin was nominated for a “Breakthrough Actor” Gotham Award for his performance  as the title role in “Gabriel,” which won critical acclaim after its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and was recently released in theatres to rave reviews.  He has also starred in the films “Electrick Children,” “Twelve,” “Lymelife,” and “You Can Count on Me.” Culkin was most recently seen in “Columbus,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.  He recently wrapped production on “Lords of Chaos” and “Unchained.”   Culkin is represented by Paradigm and Brookside Artist Management.

Paul Sparks joins the cast as Steve Schneider.  Schneider was one of David Koresh’s closest confidants and supporters but becomes deeply conflicted once his wife announces she’s pregnant with Koresh’s child.

Sparks is best known for his Screen Actors Guild Award-winning role as Mickey Doyle in the HBO period drama series “Boardwalk Empire” and for his Primetime Emmy® Award-nominated role as Thomas Yates in the Netflix political drama series “House of Cards.”  His other recent TV credits include “The Night Of…”  and “The Girlfriend Experience.”  Sparks’ film credits include “Deception,” “Afterschool,” “The Missing Person,” “Mud,” “Parkland,” “Stealing Cars” and “Midnight Special.”  Sparks recently wrapped production on “The Greatest Showman” for 20th Century Fox and “Thoroughbred,” which just premiered at Sundance and will be distributed by Focus Features. He is represented by Randi Goldstein at Gersh NY.

Shea Whigham will play the tactical commander of the FBI, known within the Bureau for his bravado.

Shea Whigham is best known for his role as Eli Thompson on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and currently has recurring television roles “Fargo”   and “Vice Principals.”  His filmography includes roles in “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Star Trek Beyond.”  He can currently be seen on the big screen in “Kong: Skull Island.”  Additional upcoming film projects include Netflix’s “Death Note,” “High Wire Act” and “LAbyrinth,” about the murder investigations of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.  Whigham is represented by CAA and Principal Entertainment.

Michael Shannon has already been announced to star as lead FBI negotiator, Gary Noesner, with the role of the infamous cult leader, David Koresh, to be played by Taylor Kitsch.  John Leguizamo also recently joined the cast ATF agent Robert Rodriguez.

“Waco” is written by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (“No Escape”) and will be directed by John Erick Dowdle.

Six-Part Event Series Produced by Weinstein Television
Goes Into Production Next Month

Premieres on Paramount Network in 2018

New York, NY, March 24, 2017 – Multifaceted performer and Emmy® Award-winner John Leguizamo has joined the cast of “Waco,” a  six-part event series based on the gripping true story of the 51-day standoff that began with an ATF raid of a religious sect in Waco, Texas and resulted in a deadly fire.  The series will be produced by Weinstein Television and will air on Paramount Network in 2018.  The series is also set to begin production on location in Santa Fe, NM next month.

John Leguizamo joins the cast as ATF agent Robert Rodriguez.  Rodriguez was sent into Koresh’s Mount Carmel to gather evidence and build a federal case against the Branch Davidians but forged a bond with the people inside.

He brings phenomenal range and authenticity to everything he does,” says Ted Gold, Senior Vice President, Scripted Original Series for Paramount. “The role of Robert Rodriguez is little known, but utterly fascinating as he was the only undercover agent to infiltrate David Koresh’s compound.”

Leguizamo has appeared in more than 75 films, starred on Broadway winning several awards, and has numerous television series.   Leguizamo recently co-starred on the Netflix drama series Bloodline and reprised his roles in the latest installments of the John Wick and Ice Age movie franchises.  He was recently signed to co-star in the ABC drama pilot Salamander.   He is represented by UTA, Silver Lining Entertainment and attorneys Jason Sloane and Jim Gilio.

“Waco” will reveal the untold story exploring the true life details leading up to and chronicling the 1993 standoff between the FBI, ATF and David Koresh’s spiritual sect, The Branch Davidians.  Told from several perspectives of those most intimately involved in both sides of the conflict, this story has never been shared on television before – and is surprising in its stark contrast to the media narrative at the time and what is remembered of Waco almost 25 years later.

Leguizamo joins an impressive cast for “Waco” that has been previously announced including Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch.

Network Inks Season 10 of “Ink Master” To Premiere in 2018

New York, NY, March 23, 2017 – Spike’s hit original tattoo-competition series, “Ink Master,” continues to grow, renewing for a tenth season and greenlighting a new special, “Ink Master Angels.” The announcement was made today by Chachi Senior, Senior Vice President, Original Programming, Spike. “Ink Master” and “Ink Master Angels” are produced by Truly Original.

Season 10, which has been picked up for 16 one-hour episodes, will go into production later this year and air on the rebranded Paramount Network in 2018.

With the rise in popularity of female competitors on “Ink Master,” Spike also has greenlit “Ink Master Angels.” The one-hour special will feature four of Season 8’s top female competitors – Ryan Ashley, Kelly Doty, Nikki Simpson and Gia Rose – as they travel the country and go head to head with some of America’s most talented tattoo artists in a variety of challenges, to see who has what it takes to beat them. The special will debut later this year.

“I’m so pleased to see ‘Ink Master’ reach a milestone tenth season as it continues to be a great ratings driver for the network,” said Senior. “The franchise has shown such amazing growth with our female audience that it is a natural progression to launch a female-fronted standalone competition, as well.”

Season 9 of “Ink Master” debuts this June along with new episodes of spinoff series “Ink Master: Redemption.”

Each week, “Ink Master” puts artists through a series of tattoo challenges that not only test the artists’ technical skills, but also their on-the-spot creativity, as they must create and execute an original tattoo on a “human canvas.” Each episode focuses on a different and distinct style of tattooing such as realism, black and gray, and American traditional. The masterpieces the artists create will last a lifetime – and so will their mistakes. After every challenge, the contestants face a tough panel made up of series host Dave Navarro and world renowned tattoo artists Chris Nunez (“Miami Ink”) and Oliver Peck (Elm Street Tattoo).

NIELS SCHUURMANS NAMED CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER FOR PARAMOUNT NETWORK, TV LAND, AND CMT

New York, NY, March 3, 2017 – Niels Schuurmans, a 25-year veteran of Viacom, has been named to the newly created position of Chief Marketing Officer for Paramount Network, TV Land, and CMT. The announcement was made today by Kevin Kay, President, Spike TV, TV Land, and CMT to whom he will report.

In his new role as CMO, Schuurmans will start immediately and will oversee Marketing and Creative for Spike, which he will help rebrand as Paramount Network, along with overseeing all cross-network marketing initiatives for Spike, TV Land, and CMT, working closely with the individual networks’ respective marketing teams.

Schuurmans is no stranger to Spike. He played an integral role in the network’s launch as “The First Network For Men” in 2003 as Executive Vice President, Consumer Marketing and Executive Creative Director, a position he held for 11 years.

Most recently, Schuurmans served as Chief Creative Officer/Executive Vice President, Creative and Branded Content, for Viacom Velocity where he was responsible for the overall ideation, development and execution of branded and partner integrated marketing creative content across all the Viacom brands and platforms (including MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Spike, CMT, Logo, and TV Land).

Schuurmans launched Viacom Velocity in January of 2014 with Velocity partner Dario Spina EVP Marketing.   Viacom Velocity quickly grew to be considered the gold standard in branded content across the media landscape and over the past three years has been recognized with numerous prestigious industry awards for outstanding work.

Schuurmans began his career at Nickelodeon where lead the development and launch of classic Nickelodeon franchises like “The Big Help,” “SlimeTime LIVE,” “U-Pick Live,” “SNICK,” and many others.  He also lead the creative charge in marketing Nickelodeon’s foray into features film business with the “Rugrats” movies, the “Wild Thornberry” movies and “Spongebob’s” introduction to the big screen.
