SPIKE ADDS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF CURRENT,

CHAZ GRAY TO ORIGINAL SERIES TEAM

 

November 29, 2016 – Spike announced today the addition of Chaz Gray to its Original Series team as the network’s Executive Producer of Current. In this newly formed role, Gray will report to Chachi Senior, Senior Vice President Original Series, and will oversee the production of several current network series including “Bar Rescue,” “Back to the Bar,” “Ink Master” and “Ink Master: Redemption,” in addition to contributing to the network’s forthcoming series launches.

“Chaz is a seasoned producer in the non-fiction reality television world and we are excited for him to bring his experienced hand to our stable of series,” said Senior. “As Spike continues to grow and expand its audience, Chaz will be an integral part of our continued success.”

Previously, Gray has served as an Executive Producer on a variety of non-fiction reality programming including “Top Chef,” “36 Hours,” and “The Real Housewives of Orange County 100th Episode Special,” and earned producing credits on “The Amazing Race,” “Last Comic Standing,” “Out of Egypt,” “Junkyard Wars,” and “The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot.”

In addition to his experience producing a wide variety of shows for broadcast and cable networks, Gray previously served as an Executive Producer and Director of Development at Discovery Channel.

Gray will be based in Spike’s Los Angeles offices.

New York, NY, November 10, 2016 – Spike TV is launching a new docuseries initiative, “Spike Serialized” that will consist of multi-episode series that take a provocative, in-depth look into subjects or individuals that will be both eye-opening and thought-provoking.

The topics and characters explored will run the gamut from hot-button areas such as crime and race to never-before-seen look at some of society’s most intriguing individuals.

“The Spike Serialized initiative will showcase topics or individuals that are not only relevant and entertaining, but will also be impactful and create a national dialogue,” said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series.

On the heels of the “Spike Serialized” announcement the network has greenlit the six-episode docuseries, “It Was Him.” The new series examines the infamous cold-blooded murderer Ed Edwards through the lens of the astonishing investigation led by his grandson, Wayne Wolfe and veteran police detective John Cameron. Spike’s six-part documentary series will be produced by Objective Films.

Recently, Spike announced “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story,” from Executive Producer Shawn “Jay Z” Carter and Weinstein Television, which will fall under the “Spike Serialized” banner.

“TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” is a compelling, six-part documentary event series tells the story of Kalief Browder, a young African-American student who spent three years on Rikers Island without ever being convicted of a crime. Executive Producers for “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” include Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Harvey Weinstein, David Glasser, Jenner Furst, Nick Sandow, Julia Willoughby Nason, and Michael Gasparro.

The previously announced “John McAfee Project” will now fall under the “Spike Serialized” umbrella as well. Both projects are slated to air in 2017.

“The John McAfee Project” explores the life of virus software creator John McAfee and will reveal unanswered questions about his life ranging from drug-fueled college days in England to learning to battle computer viruses early in his career at Lockeed in the 1980’s, to starting McAfee and Associates in 1987, to a 2012 murder investigation in Belize. But it’s more than just a murder mystery, it’s a story of the man who invented modern day paranoia and injected his manufactured paranoia into the cultural zeitgeist. Is he certifiably insane or insanely credible? Has the security software guru become a gun-toting, paranoid killer who has lost touch with reality? Or does he have nefarious enemies out to destroy him and crumble his empire? Or is the man who earned enormous success and wealth based on the public’s online security fears and paranoia playing another mind-game? “The John McAfee Project” will consist of six episodes and is directed and executive produced by Billy Corben.

New York, NY, November 10, 2016 – Wayne Wolfe has a shocking and terrible family secret. Less than a year ago, he discovered that his real grandfather was the deceased, convicted killer Ed Edwards. Possibly the most notorious serial killer in American history, he was convicted of five cold cases in his 70s, but had potentially embarked on a decades-long murder spree. Spike TV examines the infamous cold-blooded murderer through the lens of the astonishing investigation led by Wolfe and veteran police detective John Cameron in the new documentary series “It Was Him.”

Spike’s si-part documentary series was developed by Jimmy Fox of Objective Media Group, who will executive produce, along with the show-running team Jackson Nguyen and Todd Crites of Turn Left Productions. It began production in the fall of 2016.

Shortly after determining that Edwards was his grandfather, Wolfe learned of the incredibly compelling link between him and a string of astonishingly high-profile murders. In an attempt to shed light on his family history and find closure for his father, Wolfe joined forces with the investigator John Cameron. Cameron, a cold-case expert and retired detective based in Great Falls, Montana, has been investigating the infamous mass murderer Edwards for almost a decade.

Cameron met Edwards in 2008 while working on the parole board in Montana. In this position, he was able to access undisclosed information that points to the fact that Edwards could be responsible for some of the most high-profile crimes of our generation.

The search for the truth has haunted the seasoned detective and drives him to seek answers. Cameron’s meticulously compiled evidence has Edwards as the ultimate suspect in some of the most well-known murder cases, including the Zodiac Killer, Laci Peterson and many more.

Edwards was arrested in 2009 and found guilty of five grisly murders over 20 years, all of which involved kidnapping, shootings, stabbings, torture, auto theft, all under an assumed identity. He died of natural causes in prison in 2011, four months before his execution.

Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch to Star In Six-Part Scripted Event Series Based
On the 1993 Waco, Texas Siege

 “Waco” Goes Into Production Next Spring

New York, NY, October 26, 2016 – Weinstein Television has teamed up with Spike TV for their highly anticipated event series “Waco,” starring Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch. Previously announced in August, the six-part event series is based on the harrowing true story of the 1993 FBI siege of a religious sect in Waco, Texas that resulted in the deadly shoot out and fire.

“Waco” will forever change the way the dramatic siege will be viewed. The landmark series will be the definitive untold story exploring the true life details leading up to and chronicling the 51- day siege between the FBI, AFT and David Koresh’s spiritual sect, The Branch Davidians.  Told from several perspectives of those most intimately involved from both sides of the conflict, including surviving Branch Davidians which has never been shared on television before, is surprising in its stark contrast to the media narrative at the time and what is remembered of Waco almost 25 years later.

“Waco” will be written by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (“No Escape”) and directed by John Erick Dowdle and will go into production next spring.

Shannon, (“Revolutionary Road,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Take Shelter”) a critically-acclaimed and Academy award®-nominated actor, will play lead FBI negotiator, Gary Noesner.

The role of the infamous cult leader, David Koresh, will be played by Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “John Carter,” “Lone Survivor”), one of Hollywood’s rising stars.

Shannon, Kitsch, and the Dowdle brothers will executive produce the series along with TWC Co-Chairmen Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein, President and COO David Glasser, Co-head of Production Jennifer Malloy, and Head of Scripted Television Megan Spanjian of Weinstein Television.“

The series is based on two biographies, A Place Called Waco, by Branch Davidian David Thibodeau, one of the nine survivors of the final fire on April 19, 1993, and Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, written by the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge of Negotiations Gary Noesner.

New York, NY, October 6, 2016 – Weinstein Television and Shawn “Jay Z” Carter have teamed up with Spike TV for a groundbreaking event series that will forever change the way we look at the criminal justice system in this country.

 

“TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” a compelling, six-part documentary event series tells the story of Kalief Browder, a young African-American student who spent three years on Rikers Island without ever being convicted of a crime.

 

Browder was a 16-year old high school student from the Bronx walking home from a party when he was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack. He spent an unthinkable three years in jail awaiting trial; two of those years in solitary confinement. The case never went to trial and the chargers were ultimately dropped. After his release from Rikers Island, he took his own life. His story and the challenges it poses to our understanding of American freedoms are at the heart of the event series.

 

“TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” set to debut on Spike in January 2017, will be an important television event that takes a comprehensive look at Browder’s story using first-person accounts, archival footage, and cinematic recreations of key scenes from Browder’s life to present a definitive narrative of the shocking story that became a symbolic touchstone for criminal justice activism and reform. “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” will feature exclusive interviews from a wide range of those connected to the story, from politicians to close friends and family members to social reformers.

 

“Kalief Browder is a modern day prophet; his story a failure of the judicial process,” said Carter.  “A young man, and I emphasize young man, who lost his life because of a broken system.  His tragedy has brought atrocities to light and now we must confront the issues and events that occurred so other young men can have a chance at justice.”

 

“JAY Z, Kevin Kay, Sharon Levy and the entire team at Spike have been incredible partners on this project. What happened to Kalief is heartbreaking, but sadly, in reality, not the first of its kind. This series will take an important look at why Kalief’s life was cut so short, the flaws in our justice system and hopefully will continue some powerful conversations and movements for some much needed reform,” said TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein.

 

“Kalief’s story should endure and inspire much-needed change in the criminal justice system,” said Sharon Levy, Spike’s Executive Vice President, Original Series. “When  Weinstein Television brought us this project, we immediately knew it was a story that had to be told.”

 

“The story on the evening news created a lot of attention and action around Kalief Browder, but it wasn’t the whole story. If Kalief Browder’s life matters then his whole life matters, and that’s how we have been approaching this project,” said Jenner Furst, the director of this six-part series, from his Brooklyn-based company The Cinemart.

 

Executive Producers for “TIME: The Kalief Browder Story” include Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Harvey Weinstein, David Glasser, Jenner Furst, Nick Sandow, Julia Willoughby Nason, and Michael Gasparro. Sharon Levy is Spike’s Executive Vice President, Original Series, Chachi Senior is Senior Vice President of Original Series for Spike and will oversee the documentary series for the network.
