Savage Family Diggers – Bios

February 17th, 2012 by SPIKE Press

RIC SAVAGE

Born and raised in western North Carolina, Ric Savage, 42, is a former professional wrestler turned artifact recovery expert, hunting relics from America’s past with the help of his all-star team, American Savage.

Savage’s amateur wrestling career started in the U.S. Army, where he competed with the 82nd Airborne post wrestling team at Fort Bragg, NC, until a knee injury in 1989 landed him in physical therapy.  After a long recovery, Savage re-emerged in the sport as a professional wrestler near his hometown in western North Carolina in 1990, training in a friend’s garage and wrestling at small independent shows until he got his big break in 1991.

“Heavy Metal” Ric Savage had a prolific seven year career in the sport, competing in nearly every wrestling organization, among them the WCW (World Championship Wrestling), the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling), and the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance).

Following his retirement from the sport in 1997, Savage returned to his other passion, the Civil War era, by getting his start in relic hunting.  Soon after Savage stumbled across his very first find, a ball of shrapnel he found at the site of the Battle of Cold Harbor, VA he and has since continued to search former battle sites through his Mechanicsville, VA-based business, American Savage.

With the help of his wife Rita, their son Giuseppe, and artifact recovery experts Bob Buttafuso and Rue Shumate, American Savage has recovered a wide range of valuable items, including hundreds of Civil War bullets, dozens of Civil War artillery shell fragments, multiple Native American arrow and axe heads, a set of prehistoric shark teeth, and a Civil War era beer bottle.

RITA SAVAGE

Originally born in Baltimore, MD, Rita Savage, 46, moved to Fairfield, PA at the age of twelve, a town located only ten miles from the famous Battle of Gettysburg, where she was immersed into Civil War culture.  The allure of the history within the area piqued her interest in the era, however upon graduating high school, Savage entered Hanover PA Cosmetology School in order to receive a degree in cosmetology.

After completing her studies, Savage opened two hair salons, followed by an antique store, a pizza shop and a deli.  In between that time, Rita met Ric while waitressing at a local restaurant.  In 1999, the Savages were wed, and eleven years later, the couple turned their mutual interest in the Civil War and its relics into a full-fledged business, American Savage.

At the company, Savage is responsible for managing the business, pinpointing dig sites, coordinating sales and scheduling.

 GIUSEPPE SAVAGE

Giuseppe Savage, the eldest son to Rita and Ric, has traveled to all parts of the United States taking a series of odd jobs since graduating from high school in 2003.  A true road warrior, the 26-year-old first worked at a carnival, touring the country and learning the ins and outs of the traveling business. At the carnival, he ran several food and game stands, as well as assembled and disassembled rides for extra cash.  Savage then settled in California for a short time, running a funnel cake stand, before hitting the road again with Artificial Ice, a company that assembles ice skating rinks across the US for corporate parties.

In 2010, Savage returned home to Mechanicsville, VA to work alongside his parents at American Savage.  The different trades that he has mastered over the past eight years has made him the company’s best handyman.  He can drive, fix, or make just about anything.

RUE SHUMATE

Rue Shumate, born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, has spent more than two decades digging for Civil War relics and hunting Indian artifacts.  An accomplished businessman, Shumate, 43, owns two automotive repair shops in Colonial Heights, VA, and multiple rental houses, but considers digging his passion.

Shumate’s finds include dozens of rare Confederate buttons, several Union buckles, underwater-recovered swords and guns, as well as thousands of Native American arrowheads, pottery pieces, and axe heads.  He joined the American Savage team in 2010.  Considered the tunnel rat, Shumate’s expertise digging has been invaluable to the group, as he is often the first and last out of each dig site hole.

Shumate lives in Petersburg with his wife, Katie, and two sons.

BOB BUTTAFUSO

Bob Buttafuso serves as the most senior member of the American Savage team, with over forty years of experience digging up pieces of history all over the country. He makes his home in Manassas, Virginia, the site of a famed Civil War Battle, where he owns a successful electronics store and repairs and sells metal detectors and trades Civil War relics.

Buttafuso’s experience working with metal detectors is extensive: he has authored a book on metal detecting called “Relic Hunting from A to Z” with another in the works, and consults for one of the largest metal detector manufacturers in the world.  Buttafuso has made a name for himself as a relic dealer and aficionado, hosting websites devoted to stopping the proliferation of fakes in relic collecting. It is through one of these websites that Buttafuso and Ric Savage developed a mutual respect, so when American Savage grew and became the successful business it is today, Savage looked no further than his vastly experienced friend to round out his team.

SPIKE TV HUNTS FOR BURIED HISTORICAL TREASURES IN NEW ORIGINAL SERIES “AMERICAN DIGGER”

Unscripted Series Travels Around The Country Uncovering Hidden Treasure Found In The Backyards Of Everyday Americans

Series Following Former Professional Wrestler, Ric Savage And His Team Of Relic Hunters Premieres Wednesday, March 21 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT

New York, NY, February 15, 2012 – Spike TV ventures around the country in search of historical treasure buried in the backyards of unsuspecting citizens in the new unscripted original series, “American Digger.”  Premiering Wednesday, March 21 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT, “American Digger” follows the American Savage team, led by former professional wrestler-turned-modern- day relic hunter Ric Savage as they scour target-rich areas, such as battlefields and historic sites, in hopes of striking it rich by unearthing and selling rare pieces of American history.

In the US, there are millions of historical relics buried in backyards just waiting to be discovered and turned into profit.  “American Digger” hopes to claim a piece of that pie as the series travels to a different city each week, including Detroit, MI, Brooklyn, NY, Chicago, IL and Jamestown, VA searching for high-value artifacts and relics, some of which have been untouched for centuries.  After pinpointing historical locations such as Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields, Savage’s first task is to convince reluctant homeowners to let his team dig up their property using state-of-the-art metal detectors and heavy-duty excavation equipment.  The team will then sell any artifacts found for a substantial profit by consulting experts and scouring the antique and collectible markets, but not before negotiating a deal to divide the revenue with the property owners.

Throughout the series, items with great historical and cultural significance will be found, including a late 17th century British Carronade naval cannon, a 5 million year old Megalodon shark’s tooth and a 19th century Kentucky long rifle.

American Savage, based in Mechanicsville, VA, is the top artifact recovery company in the country, digging as much as half a million dollars worth of historical artifacts out of US soil each year.  The team is comprised of recovery expert Rue Shumate, battlefield historian Bob Buttafuso, Savage’s wife Rita who manages the business and their 25-year old son Giuseppe, who provides tech support and is the “muscle” of the operation.

Born and raised in western North Carolina, Savage is a former professional wrestler turned artifact recovery expert, hunting relics from America’s past with the help of his all-star team, American Savage. “Heavy Metal” Ric Savage had a prolific seven year career in the sport, competing in nearly every wrestling organization, among them the WCW (World Championship Wrestling), the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) and the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance).  Following his retirement from professional wrestling in 1997, Savage returned to his other passion, the Civil War era, by getting his start in relic hunting.  His first major find, a hunk of shrapnel he found at the site of the Battle of Cold Harbor, VA, prompted him to form American Savage and continue his pursuit of history and riches.  Since its inception, American Savage has recovered a wide range of valuable items, including hundreds of Civil War bullets, dozens of Civil War artillery shell fragments, multiple Native American arrow and axe heads, a set of prehistoric shark teeth and a Civil War era beer bottle.

“American Digger” is a 13 half-hour episode series created and produced by Gurney Productions (“Auction Hunters”), owned by Scott and Deirdre Gurney.  Sharon Levy is Spike TV’s Executive Vice President, Original Series, Tim Duffy is Senior Vice President of Original Series for Spike TV and Justin Lacob is Director, Original Series.

“Ink Master,” hosted by music legend and tattoo aficionado Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction) and judged by renown tattoo artists Chris Nunez (“Miami Ink”) and Oliver Peck (Elm Street Tattoo), is the latest original series that aims at broadening Spike’s audience.  Through the first four episodes of “Ink Master’s” premiere season (launched Tuesday, January 17 at 10 PM, ET/PT), the series is averaging a robust 1.5 million viewers in its Tuesday night timeslot and 5.2 million total viewers per week including repeat telecasts.  The show has dramatically broadened the audience in its timeslot, posting a +106% increase with Men 18-49 and +100% with Persons 18-49 compared to last year.  The network has found similar success recently with originals “Auction Hunters,” “Bar Rescue,” and “Flip Men.”

SPIKE TV ANNOUNCES SEASON TWO OF “FLIP MEN”

Original Series Follows Two Real Estate Investors Who Turn

Foreclosed Property Into Profit

New York, NY, February 1, 2012 – Spike TV has picked up 12 episodes for a second season of “Flip Men,” the network’s successful original non-scripted series.  The announcement was made today by Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike TV.

In its first season, “Flip Men” improved its Tuesday timeslot by +74% with Men 18-49, 61% in Persons 18-49, and 34% in total viewers. “Flip Men” is the latest original series that aims at broadening Spike’s audience.  The network has found similar success with originals “Auction Hunters,” “Bar Rescue,” and “Ink Master.”

“Flip Men” showcases the young, entrepreneurial duo of Utah-based Doug Clark and Mike Baird, who constantly roll the dice with their financial fates by buying and flipping foreclosed property.  In each episode, the hosts walk viewers through the often-tenuous process that is involved and provide tips and analysis along their journey.

The show spotlights the fierce, daily bidding war at housing auctions where Doug and Mike acquire foreclosed homes often sight unseen.  Following the purchase, cameras follow them as they enter a newly purchased house, where you never know what’s behind the door:  a biohazard, a meth lab, or a squatter who just doesn’t want to leave. Time is of the essence as they have to clean up the place, renovate it, stage it, get it to market and flip it.  It’s a race against time because every day means thousands of dollars out of their pocket.

“Flip Men” is executive produced and created by Dave Broome (“Biggest Loser”) and 25/7 Productions and is shot on location in Salt Lake City.  Production details and air dates for season two will be announced shortly.

Spike TV is available in 99.8 million homes and is a division of Viacom Media Networks.  A unit of Viacom (NASDAQ: VIA, VIAB), Viacom Media Networks is one of the world’s leading creators of programming and content across all media platforms.  Spike TV’s Internet address is www.spike.com and for up-to-the-minute and archival press information and photographs, visit Spike TV’s press site at http://www.spike.com/press.  Follow us on Twitter@spiketvpr for the latest in breaking news updates, behind-the-scenes information and photos.
