  What is wrong with the people on this show? You cannot put a shield in as an offensive weapon because it is meant to defend. Also, how is a slashing knife suppose to slash through chain mail? You said the Samurai had better armour even though it was clear that the viking used a shield that's purpose was to increase protection just like armour. There are plenty of other complaints that I have and if this is how this show is run I am never watching it again.

  this episode was rigged just like the last episode I clearly saw the viking slash the samurai 2 times once across the neck and once diagnaly across the chest

  Well the science put into it was pretty cool. The end of the fight was like "Really!? I would do things a lot different" instead of getting shot with the arrow I would of had my sheild out. Instead of starring down the Samurai while the she was shooting another arrow I would of dones something different. Way to stand still and get shot. I mean, thats what all vikings did. Samurai armor was made out of leather, bamboo, steel studs and their wepons were also made out of steel. Should be known that Japanese steel is poor in quality. I guess technique won.

  This show is such a bull crap. First of all Samurai and his Katana came after Vikings almost got wiped out from Europe or were on total decline, so how his so called superior weapon vs vikings sword, axe a match. If this show was going to be more realistic they should put warriors or watever they want to call it in close enough centuries and not centuries apart. Its like putting Waffen SS vs Musketeer. Should be even enough, who cares they are in two different periods they use same weapons, rifles, bayonets, basic grenades etc.
  Even with this Samurai winning in this one, I dont think he would have a chance, someone already said that, that a purpose of a shield is to protect itself from arrows, and he was caring on his back, yeah very very very realistic. Never knew that samurai carried so much stuff with him, spear, katana, club and bow. I meaning give me a brake. BS thats all I got to say.

  Well i have to say that it was great while the vikings had god armor so did the samurai that was made partly out of steel or did you miss that.
  Also the differents in weapon speed was crazy by the time the Viking could swing a sword his arms would be cut off. All in all i have to sat that this show rocks cant wait to see the ninja even if it is going to get owned.

  I have got to say that was bull. 1st, that Viking Expert and that axe, well lets see an over head strike like that is a finishing blow, Vikings used those things to sweep the feet out from under their opponents and to reach around. 2nd the axe he represented, then the axe he used in the test were different, i swear he used a mass produced axe in the test, thats bull shit. 3rd a katana slashing will not pierce a vikings mail. nor will it be able to easily pierce through mail while stabbing. 4th And to my knowledge a Samurai's armor was primarily leather and wood with most of the metal being located in the helmet and neck protection. While a samurais helmet is perhaps better than a vikings in protecting the neck. its main armor is not better than a vikings chain mail. 6th the fact that you forced the Viking to use his shield as a special weapon, when it was a primarily defensive object and standard issue equipment, thats simply stacking the odds against the Viking by forcing him to give up a weapons slot for a shield she's going to have with him anyway. Why not include it with the long sword like you did the net with the trident of the Gladiator, you didn't force the Apache to use a spot for the shield, and you /still/ gave the gladiator an extra weapon? 7th because of this the Viking should have had a fourth weapon, like an Atgeir, Seax, Great Axe, or a bow and arrow? This fight was clearly rigged in the samurai's favor.

  ok so i saw the viking samurai fight and it was by far the coolest i always wanted to know the out come beatween those two warriors its crazy you guys have pretty much made a show that totally was based on my wishis for long time now with all the warriors from dif continents or countries fighting aganst eachader ..buuuut one thing i hafto add about viking vs samurai is that the samurai guy was huge and realy built so when he swong or did different tequnices it was not acuret to the traditional japanise samurai ...but thats all cuz i thought it would have bin tie or maybe even vikings fight ...but yea so thanks for great show

  all i got to say is i love all the warriors in this shows and i have had this idea for a long time maybe 10 years who would actualy be the best warrior from old ways and times and gata say its all awesome and fun but i have bin studing history and different warriors and battle tactics and i love samurais and vikings but i just dont think that samurai would have come on top ...some of the ppl have good points on these coments but even lets just say everything on that show was done perfect and right for bouth sides ...I still have to add that the un fair part i see or have to say is that the samurai guy doing smashing and swinging was to big and strong for old traditional samurai so when he was using any kind of weapon from nagato, katana or "the demon club" the nubers and readings had to bin off cuz he was huge and a lot A LOT stronger then samurais back in the day soooo then if that was to be taken in a count would samurai win by only 22 fights out of 1000 oooor tie oooor would have samurai lost 22 fight for example i just think it seemed like it was not 100% fair ..i love the show and thank you guys for making one of my dreams come true hahaha but i dunno about this fight it just did not seem right i still belive a tie or viking would have it by a small amount.

  the samurai sword is the best weapon ever made! a great axe is nothing compare to a samurai sword! a samurai sword could just cut through the wooden handle and it will become useless. This show is stupid.. when they do tests it should be similar for both weapon because its not accurate when you do two different test. for example when the samurai cut through two pig bodies, the great ax should try to cut through two pig bodies too! stupid!

  I don't know if anyone used to watch the show where the ex-MMA fighter and the wrestler/ex-football guy used to learn different fight styles and at the end of the show, they would fight a student? Anyways, one of them was Jujitsu or however the fuck you spell it. The whole point is to get the samurai on the ground because he could EASILY be killed because he wouldn't be able to get up because he had so much armor, so that move in the episode where the Viking knocks the Samurai down, he'd then kill him, and its BULLSHIT that he just jumped up like that..the armor would weight too much

  Bahaha this show is such crap. When I saw the viking guy strap the round shield to his arm rather than use a center grip I knew nobody knew what the hell they were talking about. Round shields are more effective as a center grip... and a person using a center grip is unlikely to get a broken arm.

  Once again....This show is all based on statistics and information from speed of the weapons attack, and the force behind the blow...What you people dont understand, is that where this show's winner is based on stats and performance of a few tests, this doesnt mean a Samurai would win EVERY time...So why take it personally? They are doing what their job is...to figure out who is the deadliest fighter based on statistics they gather...not from observing an actual fight to the death between multiple samurai and vikings...Oh, and where equipment is very valuable you also have to be able to look at the person, Samurai and his Katana for example, and say "Oh right, he's trained to be quick, and KNOW what his oponent is doing.." <--That already makes him superior the the brute force and blood lust of a charging viking and a battle axe..No thought or speed involved when it comes the battle style of a viking besides charge and swing...However, it does change from indvidual viking to another...So i say..Instead of seeing a big Axe and Shield and thinking thats winning hands down with the chain mail and what not...you have to look into the culture and training these fighters go through...This show isnt made to be 100% accurate..so stop flipping shit about how its rigged because the viking should have won because he has a shield and axe...Fuggin rediculous....

  Great show, I think the results show it was really too close to call, it would depend on the circumstances of a real fight, but we got a great idea of the capabilities of these warriors. Seeing the ninja to be featured next episode, why not assasin vs. assasin, and feature thuggee vs. ninja. Would also love to see the zulu in an upcoming episode, too

  Let's see a FAIR fight. Natural selection points to the Viking simply because of their resilience and tenacity. I mean come on, the Samurai took dead on piercing hits and only got knocked off his feet? I've done work with spears before and I am confident that studs and hides still get torn up, especially by men who use these without peer!

  OK I do not understand why most of you people are getting so angry over this.
  1) it is not perfect but its the best we can do with science right now and it is really interesting.
  2) the re inacment they do is, believe it or not, a RE INACMENT, it is not a real fight, if you listen to them they run the simulation to 1000 deaths, the act they put on at the end is for show, and it is 1 fight out of 1000
  3) It is not rigged, its raw data and samurai came out the winner, just because your favorite hero lost does not mean this show is rigged or stupid, and both experts were clearly against each other at the beginning on view of who was going to win.
  
  I will continue to watch the show, and for everyone who cant comprehend that the little skit at the end is one fight out of 1000, and continue to rant and rave, don't watch it if your going to fight everything.
  
  Numbers do not lie.

  This show had alot of potential but fell to "Katana" worship. First the Viking shield was primarily used as a defensive weapon to block projectiles such as arrows! Samurai armor was made primarily of lamellar plates tied together with silk, effective versus spears and arrows but of minimal value when struck with a heavy weapon. The defensive qualities of using a shield and sword/axe were completely overlooked. The viking was capable of blocking and striking simultaneously where the samurai was committed to attacking due to limited defensive options. The katana was shown to be exactly what it is, a very effective weapon agaisnt lightly armored foes or bare flesh but rendered impotent versus chain mail. The Naganata is just a longer version with the same problems. While the shots with the samurai bow were impressive I'd like to see it done versus a moving target who is using his shield. Hey SPIKE, great concept for a show but crap execution....good job...next hire some real experts to host this. I was waiting for the viking weapons expert to just challenge the samurai descendant to some one on one action to prove the effectiveness of viking weapons vs samurai armor.

  gotta say, this show is pretty dumb...that giant viking guy threw the freakin spear completely through an 8 inch log....no armor except for maybe IRON MAN could stop that....

  The Samurai was still not done justice in this show. He should have won all the competitions. As for the battle depictions these are projected fantasies of idiot producers. No fight would look like that. I will not waste my breath explaining why the samurai were so much more advanced, instead I give all you viking fans one challenge; Name 3 major battles where vikings held a stronghold successfully, won REAL campaigns, or defended anything significant. As for their so called bravery, this is mocked by their tactics. Strike at night when numbers are on your side. They also lost a stronghold to Irish VILLAGERS and surrendered in shame to them when they realized their escape ships were destroyed. In short a Viking was no more than an overestimated raider. anyone can take women and children by surprise. this fight was no competition for the samurai.

  I think you guys are missing a real issue with this show. The idea is who would win in a death match between two warriors from different times and places. If that is going to be the case, then the tests with the weapons needs to conducted by people of the average size for that warrior. The computer program is basing the victor off of the tests they run with the weapons. The weapon speed, force of impact, damge done, so on and so forth.
  
  
  
  I'm sorry, but the guy they had testing out the Samurai's melee weapons was WAY more muscular and stronger than the average Samurai. He's built like a linebacker. If the Vikings were known for strength and the Samurai for skill and discipline, then shouldn't the guys testing the Viking weapons be bigger and stronger than the Samurai? The power and speed behind the Samurai's weapons would've put out FAR lower numbers if the guy they had testing out the Yumi bow was using them. He was alot closer to your average Samurai in size, weight, and build.

  I can't believe that they are only testing the strength of the weapons. Come on. This is clearly a computer geek's way of going about things. What kind of algorithm are they using anyway? Please, for the love of Odin, start plugging in the defensive capabilities as well. Anyone who studies history knows that the people with shields always win against the people without shields, (well until gunpowder, anyway). What people also don't realize is that the vikings, in larger battles, fought in shield walls like the Romans did. Scary huh? In a battle the samurai would have crashed upon the shield wall and would have been slaughtered, unless they goaded the vikings into breaking formation, (which did happen on more than one occasion due to the vikings' lack of discipline). 1 on 1 would have been very different of course, sheild walls get their effectiveness from the people around them, I'm sure we all remember the scene from the "300" where Leonides tells the hunchback dude why he can't join. I think Miyamoto Musashi could have probably taken out any viking. But please, PLEASE can we calculate more than just the force of the weapons: i.e. the speed at which the samurai would have to move to get around the shield, the total surface area of exposed body on each warrior/divided by the probablity of hitting these areas given the average striking angles of each weapon, even the reach of the weapons in question. When I first heard of this show, I almost thought that they would take a week to train two UFC fighters in each style then have them dual with fo-training weapons and count the number of lethal blows. That would have been clever. But I really have to say that the show thus-far has been a complete letdown. This was one of the best premises I can think of. I mean come on... this is what guys love arguing about when we're drunk! Please try and make the show more realistic. Even without changing your calculations, it would have been much better to pit the Apache against the

  well considering i was rooting for the viking you have to have a certain respect for these guys even putting a badass show like this on i know it may seem like oh they gave them an edge but if you wacthed the damn show they were dead even on the edge its just the samurai got the little more edge i think what they entirly do is only for chance and theres little you can do about it personally i love the show it goes somewhere for me most other shows dont and who knows maybe if the keep the show going we can see different macth ups i mean comon i wouls personally like to see a scottish highlander vs a viking and that would be a full can of whoopass with a side of win sauce

  The Samurai used in the reenactment seems to be the best of the best, while the Viking used seems to be of the lower classes. The greatest Viking warriors would have had armor all over (leg guards and gauntlets) and the best weapons in Northern Europe -- weapons that were equal if not superior to the Katana.
  
  
  
  I honestly think that the Apache vs Viking would have been more interesting, since they were both suited to light infantry and raiding roles. Knight vs Samurai would have have been more appropriate.

  This episode was rigged in the Samurais favor. In the battle the viking stood their and took 2 arrows with out using his shield which was on his back, i will give the samurai 1 shot from a bow but two was just rigged

  If you do not study martial arts you will never understand. I teach Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu. Not jujitsu, jujutsu... the REAL name for this style of martial arts from japan. The Viking was an UNREAL adversary. They had Size, strength, a killer instinct and proven armor that worked. The Viking was brutal but not disciplined. They relied greatly on numbers. Although their weapons were very useful and damaging they were not very mobile. Their armor kept them from moving very quickly and their sword fighting was very limited to certain movements. The samurai dinot carry all those weapons all the time, but when they went to war... they had all those weapons at their disposal. The Samurai were disciplined, even when there was no war or duels they were constantly training. From the time they woke up to the time they went to sleep all they ever did was train. When training in martial arts you are disciplined to react to the slightest movement of your enemy. If you could not react quick enough you were dead before you even knew what happened. The samurai would have been able to block or even dodge the Viking spear, especially when he see's it coming due to the way the viking threw it. No, the katana would NEVER be able to cut through Chain mail but the samurai would find openings. The face is not covered, the neck is not protected, The hands are not covered. There are points of the body where there is no chain mail. The samurai was also trained to fight off an attack with no weapons.
  
  One thing i will call bullshit on.... there is no way the average sized Samurai would be able to swing the Kanabo (club) hard enough at an average sized viking holding a shield and be able to hurt the viking. The Samurai simply could not compete with the Viking when it comes to brute strength. The samurai would have to think his way through the battle to find weaknesses and the Samurai did that VERY well.

  Ok so despite this hounding from people the show actually does a really good job. Samuri vs Viking is a very close fight. Like it has been brought up before the Viking should have been running at the Samuri with shield out and spear ready. He could throw a spear from 60 feet away and still hit! As well he carried up to 4 into battle so he would have been able to get up close, there is no doubt in my mind about that. The shield could also be able to withstand that big club thing the Samuri had. An experienced warrior would know to slant his shield so that the big heavy weapon would hit and then slide down barely even transfering any force onto the Vikings shield. O also I have no clue what you guys are talking about but a shield 100% can be used as an offensive weapon up close. That was the whole purpose of that small, round, pointy thing in the piddle of the shield or in actual terms the boss. Those were my only real issue with the show(well I mean it also seemed like they didn't test the Smauri armor and just said it was good but I mean whatever I am sure they tested it).
  
  
  
  Overall I think the outcome should have been flip flopped. 522 kills for the Viking and 478 for the Samuri. Anyway I say job well done and I really wish I knew how to email the people to make suggestions(wink wink nudge nudge if anyone can help me :D).

  I would like to see them add a Hawaiian Warrior to the mix. We didnt have armor, we didnt have steal.... but we have LUA the hawaiian art of bone breaking. We have long spears that were up to 15 feet long and we could toss them pretty damn far. We had clubs and weapons made for dismemberment. When a warrior was defeated... Starting with his fingers.... all the bones were broken so that he was now able to be rolled into a ball and put into a bag for disposal. Hawaiian warriors were very skilled at hand to hand combat. We also have size and strength.... I am the smallest in my family and i am 6' tall and weigh 250lbs.... Trust me, i am a freggin midget compared to the other men in my family.

  well for one did anyone see how long it took for that samurai to get them two eye shots off? not sayin they weren't impressive i mean fuck theres no way i could do that and i bow hunt, but still took him awhile to load them shots do you really think someone and i mean anyone would just stand there with shield on his back and not cover himself? second, the Katana did nothing to his armor but a small little dent to a sing ring, on the other hand the weight of that axe to the helm now granted he didn't brake anything but lol come on do you really think someone would be standing after a shock like that? he would have been on his ass if not out cold, but thats if the Viking could hit him i will give the agility to the samurai but over all blunt force and plain meanness to rip open ppl goes to the viking i dont know if the samurai would have any idea what he would have been dealing with samurai fight with honor, they bow and for the most part protect the emp. the viking on the other hand attacks alot like the appache with alot less stealth but alot more hate and no honor he would have not just stood there looking at that samurai he would have been on the offensive as soon as he seen him the samurai would have been disrupted by this way of attack, no one bowing, no fear, just plain carnage.

  First of all I want to say congrats to the Samurai for Killing the Viking using his Best weapons against the Vikings Mediocre weapons at best considering the Samurai beat the Viking by a whooping 22 kills LOL.
  
  If the Viking got to use his specialty weapon the Dane Axe instead of making the Viking put his Shield in a Weapon slot that would probably beat the Samurai alone. Also I would like to note that the Vikings also used bows, and specialty trained Vikings could shoot someone from 250 meters. The only props I would give a Samurai would be the Matchlock but the only downfall to the matchlock would be the massive reload time. But considering Real Life Scenarios the Viking would win Hands Down because the boats of the Samurai sucked so just like the ninja killed the samurai in their sleep so would the Viking except it would be a lot more brutal and a lot more messy.

  The katana didnt even scratch the vikings chainmail and the "Great Axe" was never used to attack the head. That was the job for the hand axe.

  I was enlightened about some facts and illustrations on the show I must admit.But however i believe that the Samurai would win flat out.True the Viikng was larger bigger heavier perhaps more viscious,and his weaponds heavier and coupled with his strength would virtually do more damage to the body,but that is if he would have touched the samurai who was a trained and bred warrior with immense speed and accuracy.As they said the samurai "incorporrated body mind and weapond."He could easily OUTSMART the viking and use his acquired sped and accuracy with that adaptivity that was cultured and tackle the viking who reacted on viscious babarric impulse instead of wit.

  I was really rooting for the Viking in this one. Dispite the Viking Shield it was still a closer fight. The Apache vs Gladiator was terrible. As cool as a Sling it was a really dumb choice. It got 1/333 kills. Though I agree with the Apache win but Ranged weapons had to big of an advantage to someone with almost no armor. War Club was also pretty dumb.
  
  
  
  But back to this episode it was alot better. I think the decisions for the Shild vs Club should have been switched as well as the Naganata vs Long Sword. Polearm vs Longsword w/no shield should have been a no contest.
  
  
  
  The next episode is Spartin vs Ninja and if that Spartin doesnt win 3/4 with a kill count of atleast 700 i'm calling shinanigans. Spartin had alot of armor. And were skilled in so many weapons as well as being some of the strongest warriors ever seen. I think the Ninja is a bad match up for the Spartin. Ninja's arnt fighters their assassins not to say that I hate ninjas or anything but they would have been better against the Apaches or something alot closer to their set of skills.

  Apache Vs Gladiator was great Apache deserved to win but it was definitly an unfair match up as far as the weapons went. Apache had to big of an edge with ranged since 3/4 of the weapons could be thrown.
  
  
  
  Viking Vs Samurai while I was rooting for the Viking i enjoyed this show even more then the first but I still feel that certin things about the weapons need to be tweeked. Like the Shield how it was used as if the viking had no other weapon in his hand.
  
  
  
  Spartin Vs Samurai i'm looking forward to alot. While I think that the Spartin should have this by a longshot. Spartin's arn't just dumb throw aways like Gladiators or Vikings. Thats years of breeding, training, and tactics that make them powerful. Ninjas will have an edge on speed because of their lack of armor but as far as 1v1 combat fighting Spartins are far superior. If a Ninja caught him from behind before the match started sure ninja all the way but thats not how the fights are set up.

  that was bull. vikings had much more weapons than that they had throwing axes, war hammers, etc. plus vikings had bows too. those weapons would destroy a samuri evenin his armor. samuri armor is mainly silk with a few metal plates.plus the guy who tested the viking weapons is a wimp compared to the original vikings. they were 6ft 2 on average and were strong. one hit with their axe would chop through a samuri's helmet and armor.this show is rigged that the quickest person wins.
