I really enjoyed this episode. The ending fight scene was by far the best of any episode very well choreographed. I was really glad when you guys decided to test the hook swords, i heard about them but never really knew how effective they were which brings me to my question how where the weapons picked for the monks? I know they have a huge variety of swords, spears, halberds, glaives, knives and other exotic weapons. The one weapon i hoped you would have tested was the three sectioned staff.

I was wondering if you guys did more testing with the wax wood staff than just the pots. I practice Aikido, where we use the Jo, which is about 4 feet long. The Jo is a very deadly weapon. Getting hit in the head is lethal. If u get hit in the ribs, they are broken. If you are hit on the wrist, the wrist is broken.

So how do you decide which warrior would start out with which weapon? And how do they carry them around? Because it seems that if the Shaolin had started out with his twin hooks each and every single time--It would be no contest. Conversely, if he were forced to start out with his Emei Piercers, the battle would tip in the favor to the Maori. Especially because I hear that most fights in real combat are finished within the first fifteen seconds of combat.

Great episode, though I have to say I was a bit surprised the shaolin monk won after the maori warrior got the edge on three of the four weapons matchups. Nonetheless I was glad the shaolin monk won. The ending simulation was fun to watch too.
One thing I didn't agree with though, I think the chain whip should have gotten the dge against the shark tooth club. The club wasn't all that effective at cutting up the pig carcass and the teeth broke off the weapon too. Once the club has no teeth left, it's essentially just a piece of wood. Really, what would you rather be up against, a plank of wood or a chain whip who's weilder can spin it around at blindingly fast speeds? Also aftermath crew, I'd like to know the killing power of the chain whip. I don't think any of us could tell from the tests shown on the show.

This was a fairly one sided match when it came down to the simulation. The twin hooks where the perfect weapon to bring to this match-up. It got 500 kills for one reason. If your going to have a melee fight between two one handed fighters, the weapon with the most application is going to give you the edge. It does everything!

This was a good episode alot better then the last two, but I am starting to see a trend here that all the smaller warriors keep on killing the much larger warriors with the only exception being the Ninja. I know everyone has to complain about everything but that seems like the trend I see. Any thoughts? But I love the show have not missed one yet.

Maori were robbed. Sorry, fancy dancing does nothing. Monks spent years in training but never actually fighting so they made fancy weapons that are not truly effective. Maori did the exact opposite. And if it comes down to wood versus steel, than that is crap match up.
And those slow, cumbersome, hooks were a laugh. Close quarter combat nullifies half the weapons of the Monk.

I loved this episode, but was still dissapointed at the choice in weaponry. In this episode, they picked some of the weakest weapons in the Shaolin arsenal. The only warrior class weapon that was chosen was the hookswords. I would have loved to see demonstrations of those. If more of those were used, we'd see an even greater Shaolin victory.

The computer is probably chinese that was priceless. Okay I agree that the twin hooks were sick probably the best weapon in the episode. But I think reality it would be a far different battle. After all Maori did face up against steel and win against the brits. And the brits took over most of the world. Man I wish they could actually test warrior spirit. I really don't know who the real winner would be but I will say that if I had to choose one to watch my back in a street fight it would be the Maori.

As both sides have their pro's and con's I felt that this almost an unfair match, just because of the time gap and technological gap between them. Now I understand that years of time, dedication, trial and error, and understanding their past goes into the training as well for every warrior. Which comes to my questions: If the computer were able to calculate human reasoning, logic, and raw emotion into each battle, do you think that the simulations would have been closer then they were? Secondly, would it be possible to bring back champions of previous episode? Because if that is so I think the Maori Warrior vs. the Apache would be a good tribal match up.

I really want to know who picks the match ups for this show? I mean a warrior with steel has the edge on almost any warrior only using wood and stone weapons. The twin hooks far out matched anything the Maori had. The two warrior types may have been spiritual opposites in war theory which mad for an interesting cultural study, but it came down to better technology that won it for the monks. I think this episode pitted an unfair comparison so they didn't really have to deal with the possibility of a Shaolin monk losing. Why not fight the monk against a viking who had similar technology in the steel weaponry department? Why not pit the Maori against the Apache? Maybe it's not your call but in the future mixing up already explored warriors with even new or previously used warriors to mix things up. Maybe keep a count of wins and losses for each warrior see who is the most adaptable. Have different sort of leagues for warriors with firearms, the show has a lot of interesting potential and I like the idea for next week too, I'm hooked, I want more, please deliver.

On a separate note, what were the steel ring like weapons called and why weren't they tested? I wanted to see how practical a weapon they are in the hands of an expert. And I would be interested in seeing some of the warriors who were only shown in a one on one fight take on teams of say the teams five on five each other, try to see if tactics or groups have any effect on the outcomes, are there any possibilities of seeing this happen? It would be interesting?

One last thing I forgot to add, please take out the trash talking in future episodes it is annoying and makes all the warriors involved look terrible. This episode was great because both sides were very calm and respectful toward each other and both seemed interested in what the other had to bring to the table. So if more episodes had the representative warriors behaving in the manner of this show it would be much better overall. Ok time to stop leaving comments and call it a night.

I'm very surprised to see such a big difference in kill percentage. With the Monk speed, agility, training and steel, I expected him to win, but 69% compared to 31% is a large difference. What do you think made the Monk so much more formidable in this fight? I feel it's a very experienced warrior versus a part time warrior, at least if I understand the two warriors histories from the show correctly.

I disagree with what you guys said about the staff. Did you guys do the same test with the staff to test the PSI of it? The staff could break bones also. Plus if you get hit with it in the fleshy parts of the body (solar plexus, throat, testicles, etc.) it will kill.

Interesting show with an suprising outcome given the 3 to 4 edge. But then again those hooks where a deadly weapon. My question though is why choose these 2 to go head to head. Of course the steel would win. I would love to have seen the Maori go against some one a little more on their level such as Indian of some varation who would also be using bone, stone, and wood weapons. It seems to me that putting steel against wood is like bring a knife to a gun fight.

This show is doing quite a bit to add quantitative analysis to a realm that has been commonly dominated by anime-fan boys who believe that their opinion is worth more than hard fact. That being said I was curious as to how fighting style and hand-to-hand combat were accounted for in the computer. It seems like a legitmitate question considering, according to the part of the show I caught, the Maori weapons dominated the competition at 3 to 1, yet the Monk won. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I know that some people are arguing that it was unfair to the Maori because of the steel and more modern weapons. Although this may be true, did you happen to notice that they gave the edge to the Maori 3 out of the 4 times? So when you really think about it, it all ame down to the Monk's speed and skill in order to beat the Maori. I was rooting for the Monk but after the tests I figured that they were gonna give it to the Maori. Either way I think this was a fair fight mainly because we had two skilled warriors that both didn't use armor. I liked that they didn't through an un-armored warrior Vs. a fully armored warrior. Good show, interested to see how the next one plays out.

Awsome match though i find it interesting that even though the maori warrior had three of its weapons get the edge it still lost. also in the simulation in the past there are weapons that have been tested that have not been used but in this match there was a weapon that was used but not tested the weight on a rope thing from the shaolin monk in the future please try not to introduce new weapons in the simulation. also I know that the show is only an hour so you can't fit in every weapon that was tested but could those tests be put online so that if people want to see them they can also this would mean that the footage is not wasted.
keep up the good work.

There really shouldn't be any way that the Maori even got this close, and the more I think about it, the more it bothers me. The Maori didn't have any legitimate slicing or stabbing weapons (the sting ray spear was flimsy and worthless). All of the Maori's weapons were club-like and had to be swung, which should be extremely easy for the Shaolin to block; that's right up his alley. There's no reason the Monk should even bother using anything other than the twin hooks. He could block any attack from one of the Maori's two handed weapons with one hook and immediately go in for the kill with the other. This fight was over before it started.

Loved this one!Not a master of the martial arts, but Id love to spar against both of these styles!I have a lot of respect for all of the fighting arts and one thing shines through all of them.It is not always the weapon,it is the warrior behind it.This fact is known by many who fight through the ages and is mentioned more than once by fellows in the entire series.I was fortunate to see some of the Maroi style in high school when some fellows stopped by to educate us about their culture, and I was most impressed by their passion for life and their fighting spirit. The Sholin monks style has also been showcased often in movies and I do believe the also travel to display their culture and for what I have seen I would choose the peacefull aproach before making war with them!I wish there were more fellows around where I live that would be more approachable to spar with such tenacity and passion such as these two fighting styles.

I would have bet on the Maori only because they did face steel and firearms when the English came to New Zealand and they won. Shao Lin were amazing warriors no doubt, and their skill is unquestionable but the Maoris could counter that skill greatly. The Lua (martial arts) of the Maori, Hawaiians, Tahitians and all other pacific island groups was vertically equal to any Asian martial art and their pain tolerance was great. Was this particular battle more about the superior technology rather than skill in battle?

Let me say that I completely agree with the Shaolin Monk getting the win. As mentioned, putting a steel economy against a stone economy equals a no lo contedere. I was impressed to see the arsenals of both warriors, only having limited knowledge of Maori weaponry and no real knowledge of authentic Shaolin weaponry.
What disappointed me is that the matchup was turned into a Speed-versus-Brawn match. I can see this being the case when you have a lightly-armored, quick guy like an Apache versus a big clunker like a gladiator, but the fact is, both the Shaolin Monk and the Maori warrior are unarmored. Both are nimble and both are very athletic. The Maori should not have been treated in the same way that the knight was. Just because I fight with a club does not mean that I can't dodge and avoid attacks in the same fashion as the man with the whip-blade.

First off, the battle simulation was awesome! I am surprised that nothing was said about the shaolin "chi" while they did talk a good bit about the maori "mana". Also, I think the shaolin would have gotten all the edges had they chose better weapons as they had a ton to choose from. It seems like you guys "rigged" it to make the shaolin appear to lose since they only got one edge. Good job on that actually! I was a little worried there about shaolin monks losing for only getting one edge but I think that's what your guys goal was.

i think this match up was just about who had advanced in technology. the Maori, Hawaiians and most of the pacific islanders faced metal weapons and were only conquered when firearms were brought into the equation. the metal weapons could and did nothing to the elemental weapons of the Maori. it seems like even if the Maori did win 3 out of the 4 match ups just because the Shaolin had metal it was decided by the computer even before the test were entered. the computers were made by the Chinese comment was classic.

i think this show is the best show on tv but i also have some things that i dont like about it and would like to share them. first, after watching the first few episodes the show had me hooked but when it went into the yakuza vs mafia and green beret vs spetsnaz it kind of lost its charm. i dont know if im alone on this one but i think guns are lame and i dont really care how well you can point and shoot it, so thankyou soo much for bringing us back in time. the other thing is i kind of wished you guys did it in tournament format because the deadliest warrior is only decided after all the others are dead right? (i understand that the spetsnaz would work anyone else who went up against them after beating the green beret. thats again why guns are lame.) i would like to see the winners move on to a second round. and to those who are itching to reply to this saying thats what season 2 will be it wont, they allready stated they went through 100's of warriors to chose the ones who made the show so it will just keep going. i think the basis of the show was to trick those of us who bypass the discovery network to get to spike. thanks guys

But I have a question for everyone. Do you guys enjoy testing melee/medieval warriors or ranged/present day warriors? I prefer melee since its more violent and the weapons seem cooler to watch kill.

The episode was an insult to Maori and New Zealand in general.
-Firstly, the warclub demonstrated was Hawaiian and NEVER used by the Maori in New Zealand
-The spear demonstrated was a basic fishing implement and NOT a combat weapon
-The performance of the haka in the 'final battle' was embarrassingly bad and the guy clearly had no idea what he was doing or what it actually signified. I'm guessing he watched a clip of the All Blacks doing the Haka on Youtube then practised in front of the mirror before stepping on set. The 'Ka Mate' haka isn't even a war dance (if anything, it's an affirmation of life) and would never have been used in this manner.
-The large 'Maori' demonstrating the various weapons is in fact a SAMOAN stuntman and obviously not Maori! Here is his bio:
http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/cast_bios/Sala_bio.html
http://www.entertainmentlegends.com/SalaBaker.html
....................................
So, the episode has a Samoan pretending to be a Maori, demonstrating a Hawaiian weapon that the Maori never used.
Great, isn't it?

I think the fact that the Maori had the edge on all the weapons, but the monk still won, is proof that Max's computer takes the human element into account, and not just the weapons. The hook swords clearly won this fight, getting more kills than any weapon in deadliest warrior so far. It seems that without this weapon the fight would have been very different and probably have shifted towards the Maori. My question is what is the likelihood that the average Shaolin monk would be proficient with such weapon? My understanding is that hook swords were a somewhat rare weapon, due to the extensive training required to master them. I could also see such a lethal weapon not being very popular with pacifist monks. How many Shaolin wielded hook swords? To say that 1000 monks, chosen at random, would all be proficient with such an odd, complex, and deadly weapon seems somewhat farfetched.

lol this show cracks me up, it doesn't even take into account fighting styles. I can drop a piano on someone from a 5th story window and be much more effective than half these weapons, but that doesn't mean I can beat up mike tyson in a fist fight. It comes down to technique not just brutality of a weapon strike. You have to hit first!

I disagree that the Shark Tooth Club is as effective as you say... What happens when all the teeth are gone?? Then it just becomes a regular old spanking paddle. Half the teeth were already missing after he hit with it a couple of times. So therefore i disagree, and think that the monk should have had the edge on that one.
