I am wondering why the IRA chose the slingshot or a more effective weapon. In the tests, it didnt even break through the skull, mearly took an eye out. Don't bring a toy to a war.

The final battle got me thinking. With explosives and mines, is friendly fire taken into account with the simulation? All the explosives, and the flamethrower could easily affect an ally in combat.

Why was an AR-15 tested? The IRA used the AR-18 much more, and even wrote a folk song about it. It is a very similar weapon though, and is simply a more iconic weapon.

I expected the taliban would have a close win in a random confrontation fight but I had no surprise when IRA came out on top. I was thinking the RPG would give the overall edge, but I strongly believe they were correct with giving the edge to precision. The Taliban would never match up especially in a long-term confrontation because the IRA attacks smarter, harder, and more precise.

My question is how were the mines and bombs computed in the fight? Clearly the two sides wouldn't agree to fight so the night before they can plan their strategies and plant their explosives. Also, there wouldn't be much opportunity for the Taliban to bury a landmine and pray somebody steps on it (could be their own team if they did anyways.) The nail bomb was a little more understandable, but this kind of match-up would make more sense if it were to be a straight-up fire fight. A few rockets would definitely be flying around, but it would mostly be bullets because the flame thrower is too impractical for that kind of combat situation. Either way, once again, I don't disagree with the program results even though I still don't understand entirely how it computes those essential details.

I'll look forward to season 2! Congratulations.

There's one question I've been wanting to ask the Aftermath crew. Why is it that weapons in the same range are sometimes tested on different targets? I saw that the Slingshot was used on a different material than the Bayonet was, but I thought an even stranger comparison was using the Ball And Chain in a previous episode on ice as opposed to the Iwisa being tested on glass and Christmas ornaments. From a scientific standpoint, this seems illogical. Could you please elaborate on this?

No surprise that the IRA won. They had more lethal and accurate weapons. The AR-15, aka the M-16 may have a smaller caliber than the AK-47, but the muzzle velocity and accuracy more than compensate. The Taliban "expert" when attempting to justify his inaccurate fire made the accurate comment that the Taliban fighter would go for the spray effect. Accurately placing rounds is deadlier and the AR-15 proved it. Now this test was probably at 25 meters are the most. When you fire from distances of 50-100m, the accuracy issue becomes even greater.

Taliban should have won. there is a reason bayonets mines and rpgs are still used in warfare and pipebombs slingshots and flamethrowers have been left behind.

Taliban have a proven record against very powerfull and heavily armed opponents, while IRA didnt fight on to the bitter end and instead left their country in british hands. IRA fought military police not the FULL might of a country, with bombers cruise missles and attack helicopters.

Ira gave up, Taliban fight on.

umm...flame throwers are still used...especially in palm groves and caves. Pipebombs are also still used... I will concede that slingshots are probably not in use in combat.

I thought this episode was good, one of the best, and pretty accurate. Though, my issues are 1. the Slingshot, the IRA had much better close range weapons than a Slingshot. and 2. the LPO-50 Flamethrower. You couldn't accurately test this weapon because you couldn't get your hands on it, and no two "comparable" weapons are the same. And the IRA rarely used Flamethrowers to my knowledge. They did have other heavy weapons including the RPG-7 themselves.

as for any complaints about the combat at the end, its staged, choreographed, just designed to show the weapons, how they might have been used, and then show the winner. Its not realistically accurate. Its not expected to be, i admit i didn't know this when i saw Viking vs Samurai, but now i do.

Good episode but had some problems 1. When they were testing the rifles why did the guy with the ar-15 get to be in a prone position while the guy with the ak, stood... 2. The explosives test was unfair the nail bomb had a gasoline advantage from the moped. Other then this good episode but i wish who ever choreographs the simulations did a better job come on 3 on 1 and the one ira guy still won and where did his knife come from did he borrow it from Taliban.

Nice episode, liked the test for the rifle durability which was done equally for both weapons and gave accurate results. Friendly fire kill in the final battle was awesome btw, lol @ the Taliban guy screaming at his own ally shooting a RPG in his face.

Here's a few questions I got for the season finale Aftermath:

Now that the season is over and the chances of another season being 99.99% due to popularity, will you guys be letting the viewers choose certain warriors or matchups for future episodes? It'd be a pretty great idea to post a poll in here with around 10-20 options and the top 2-6 would be featured in the next season. I'm pretty sure everyone here agrees with me in this question.

Will you guys be using past warriors in the future? Many viewers here feel that better matchups (or more exciting/intriguing anyway) can be made with some already shown warriors. Myself, want to see a Ninja vs Pirate and Knight vs Samurai episode from the warriors already shown.

Finally, not much of a question more of a props for a great debut show, awesome concept. There are a ton of warriors out there that could make up for some very exciting upcoming seasons in the future, really looking forward to it. Props for doing a good job and hope you guys can address some concerns already shown by some viewers in the future for more accurate results.

Great show, hope to see a second season, weird episode...

I guess the sort of jingoistic silliness going on it that final fight scene takes the edge of an otherwise extremely controversial episode, but I'm not sure how I feel about trivializing religious extremism and the violence it can engender.

Aside from the obvious controversy spawned simply by the matchup and the AK vs. AR battle that has smoldered well beyond this show I have a couple questions for The Aftermath crew. Chiefly, what was up with the flamethrower and the RPG? RPG-7s fire shaped charge warheads, and don't do their main damage via shrapnel. It's not an infantry killer, it's anti tank weapon. That footage looked a bit sketchy too, I know you guys need to set up footage to show the effect of the weapon, but did you really have active RPG rounds on set? Your flamethrower mock up was odd too, you mentioned a range of up to 200 feet, but your model looked effective out to 15. Please tell us what's going on with these apparent oddities.

Anyway, love the show, much respect for supporting landmines.org, and I can't wait to see next season's match ups.

there was no doubt in my mind that the IRA would win; They are the undefeated army many time there was talk of how the Taliban drove out the Soviets and I guess I would be able do that as well if I had U.S. backing (remember Charlie Wilson's War) but the IRA never backed down they made a peace accord but they never surrendered, although even with the ceasefire and the peace accord there are still those who label them terrorists;it's funny I remember another country who's people were fighting the British for their freedom, using the same fighting tactics and and gaining the same collateral damage back in the 1700s the funny thing is those people are today remembered as patriots, sons of liberty and freedom fighters, They even won and came up with a document called the Declaration of Independence however, back in history The Brits were calling them the terrorists

To be honest i thought that the IRA would have the advantage. They did seem to be more "organized" then the Taliban. Though i dont fully agree with some of the kills. A person is not going to stand there and take a flamethrower to the face. Though concerning the "mid-ranged" weapons, Flamethrower vs. RPG, was a little uneven. The RPG has a far longer range than the flamethrower. How did you decide to use the rpg as a mid-ranged wep? Though i did like that all weapons got a kill. And it was f@#king hilarious that the 2nd taliban rpg wacked his own man.

listen. there is no doubt who would win. The IRA is a more organized more lethal. the reliability of the AK-47 is irrelevant, if you are having a small scale fight that is not going to last a long time than the reliability of a gun is not important because it will only become a problem after the battle. in addition the IRA was backed by the soviet union so they would of have had access to AK-47's, RPG's and other heavy artillery.
do you guys evaluate the warriors in both environments because if your not , thats a serious flaw. so are you ?

Great show guys! Much better than I expected. I thought this was a nearly perfect matchup based on similar weapons, backstory (both extremists, willing to die for their cause), etc. Now for the Aftermath: Both the RPG and Pipe Bomb reactions brought the crew to rave about multiple kills (The pipe bomb easily taking out three+ people in an explosion, and the RPG as well. Now, since these weapons are so devastating, does their mulitple kill potential get taken into account? In a 5 V 5 matchup, did the pipe bomb or RPG ever account for two kills? How is this massive devastation and multiple kill potential taken into account?

Thanks for a great season, and I'm looking forward to next season... because we all know how awesome of a matchup Templar Knights Versus Yuan Dynasty Mongolian Warriors would be: both were armies hell bent on conquering civilizations, both had similar technology, both would have excellent weapon matchups!

    -Brock.

Great work, a fabulous episode and season I hope that this show comes back for many more seasons to provide entertainment for years to come. In regards to this episode I was wondering whether the fact that the flame thrower can light stuff on fire was taken into account because you could just light a passageway on fire and thus effectivly block it off. Another thing, the flame thrower can be used many times in a short interval so it could be more effective in this senario where you wouldn't have time to reload the RPG-7. One more quick note on the flame thrower the flames would block the vision of anyone trying to shoot the person weilding it making the flame thrower a defence. The accuracy tests were a bit skewed because the IRA was resting the gun on an object and kneeling and the taliban was standing. I found the display of how many people were left distracting I belive it would be better if it was placed slightly lower on the bottom of the window.

One final thing I want to say, please put the testing that did not make it onto the show online so that we can better see where the information is coming from and also reducing the number of complaints recieved about the flaws in the testing.

    Keep up the good work.

you have demonstrated to many viewers like me the importance of the warriors, and the impact that they have had on the world. they deserved to be remembered and the respect you guys could give them. even if they die (because some will) they will be given dignity and the pride that they deserve as each warrior, modern or ancient, fought and risked died for their reasons. they have made their stand on this earth and you guys have made the audience understand that along with their importance. i find the episodes quite educating at times. show us all the warriors that deserve to be remembered, lest we forget.

I am an Irish-American and very proud of my family and my roots. I've read a few not all of the previous comments about this battle. I agree the IRA are the best adversary when it comes to guerilla war-fare. One must keep in mind that the Irish and Scots have been battling the English for centuries. The Scots were fortunate enough to gain the independence from England. The Irish were some what blessed with seprating from England, thanks to Mick Collins, in 1920. The issue you have to take into consideration about this battle is that you are dealing with 2 completely seperate terrains. The IRA are fighting in citiies where as the Taliban are fighting in a desert region. So yes the RPG would be great in both terrains but how much close combat conditions would the IRA be involved in? If you look at the history of the IRA most of the destruction was through pipe-bombs and mid-range fire power. The Taliban have no close quarter coverage in the desert so they would need to use long distant fire power to stop their "enemies". I, as an Irish-American who loves his country and his heritage, was uplifted to know that the IRA would defeat the Taliban. Even though our brave soldiers are over there dying every day for our safety, its nice to know some of my former family members would have really done some damage to the the Taliban! This was a great episode. I think the next and one of the most controversial ones would be the IRA vs. the English Army. That would be great to air that on St. Patrick's Day because as every Irishman/woman know, "You'll Never Beat The IRA" ~Tiocfaidh ar la!!!!!!!!!!! Erin Go Brah!!!!

i have a friend who is a high school teacher and i suggested an assignment project about your show. it was basicly a research to gather information for a prediction on who would win and why. after the students watched the show they were allowed to dispute or defend the results on what might have gone wrong with the your guys show, sans the computer part and. my friend told me that the students and they liked the idea and that it worked out great.

The result of this fight was expected in my opinion. But I still dont understand why you dont do the same tests on the weapons. It would have been cool to see what the nail bomb would do to the Balistic Dummbies. Also what was up with the sling shot? You cant tell me the IRA didnt have a better close range weapon. A Knife or some sort of Shovel, anything but the sling shot.

Im gettin sick of the Taliban. Why dont they fight like real men. Instead of hiding behind their women. If they'er so confident that God is on their side, then they need to come out. Fight us, see what happens. We'll kill them all. their pathetic. Iraq could be peacefull, where the civilians are happy for a change. kids could ride their bikes without worring about hitting a mine. Hey I promote World Peace, just one well placed Round at a time.

Anyway this is a great show, and how about this for an opener for Season 2== U.S. Navy S.E.A.L.S vs. British S.A.S.

Or United States Marines v.s.British Royal Marines. See whos better. Think about it.

why did the IRA member pull out a knife in the simulation even though the weapon wasnt tested, he even got a kill with it and it wasn't even a tested weapon.

the IRA got a kill with a knife in the video and it does not make sense because it wasnt even in their weapons that were tested, why didnt you just test the knife instead of the crappy sligshot so it would have made sense...i mean the sligshot was barely used anyway cuz it sorta sucked...

i guess the outcome would be determined what and whose home court they are fighting in. Urban warfare or in the mountains. my take

    Greetings Gentlemen,

My question to you pertains to the IRAs slingshot, as I recall there is no bone behind the eye... with this in mind, and the proven force that it can deliver, with an accurate shot is it then conceivable that the metal shot could have passed through the eye and into the brain...

    Other than that great show.

Maybe I can answer that for you FATLmetal. They test many more weapons than they can possibly cram into 45 minutes of television. A weeks worth of hard work and footage just cant be squeezed in. So they try to show what they feel to be more pivotal and maybe even entertaining weapons. It basically boils down to not having enough time to show everything.

On a side note I know I would like to see some of the winners take on each other and maybe some of the "not winners" taking on each other as well. I mean you already have the data just lying around lets see a tournament! Or better yet.. a full scale BATTLE ROYAL! Love the show can't get enough blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda.

The weapons used in this match up might as well have been given to any other rebel force or army since modern weapons are pretty much standardized now. The Taliban was outfitted as any Russian army or Russian backed force would be armed, like the Viet Cong or the Somalis under General Aidid. The IRA also had access to the same weaponry, but you gave them a slingshot versus a bayonet? Come on!

Okay here is my take on the sling shot. As I am a sling shot fanatic. They are fun and very accurate. They are very good at killing rabbits and birds. They also break ceramic tiles really well also. That being said I am sure the IRA had better mid range weapons than a sling shot. give the guy a revolver or something some kind of hand gun would qualify as mid range.

Also I think it is funny that the Iranian said "taliban believe in their gun more than their woman" Hu they don't believe in their women @ all They are sick fucks. At least the IRA were trying to make it free for all their people unlike the taliban.

In the simulation, I think you should have had the man scream "ALLAAAAH!" right before he was killed by the nail bomb. But in a more serious note, I think you should have considered that the slingshot could have been a distraction weapon (like the spit of poison of Shacka Zulu, or the black eggs of the ninjas). It could take an eye out, thus creating an advantage for the IRA.
As well, I like how, during the simulation, you showed how many lives each squad had left. This would have made the green beret vs. spetsnaz episode easier to understand.
Lastly, as you may have read in many preceding comments, will there be a season 2?

By the way, that Taliban "expert" needs to learn to keep his finger off the trigger while he is not shooting. He was waving that Tokarev around with his finger on the trigger the whole time he was talking about how they don't trust their women.

Here's a question, in the final battle where it's fairly closed off with all the metal cars forming alleys and corridors, wouldn't the RPG be hard to use? It's not exactly a CQB weapon because of the shrapnel and blowback and unless you had a guy standing off and firing into the field, it's as dangerous to the user as it is to the intended target. Did the simulation take that into account that the operator could also be hurt by the RPG in those close quarters?

To those who have commented about the IRA operative using the knife, have you ever known any military or paramilitary personel to be without a knife, I personally have carried a knife on my person since I was about 5, and being of Irish decent, no self respecting Irishman is going to be without

One of the guys from the IRA team was talking about the IRA planning all of their attacks carefully. I was wondering if the computer simulator took into account intelligence or is there some generic model of a person that all the data is input into since these two groups would obviously not be planning to meet up?

Thanks for an amazing first season. looking forward to the next 999999999 of them

just out of curiosity, how do you guys pick the weapons for each faction? Do you let the teams pick, or do you use historical evidences, and would you leave a weapon out if it would almost guaruntee a victory for one side?
