Season 5 of Bellator continued Sept. 17 with middleweight quarterfinals in Hollywood, Florida. On a card filled with touching stories, Bryan Baker's conditioning allowed him to survive an early onslaught from Jared Hess and earn a third-round TKO victory. Brian Rogers kept his streak of first-round knockouts alive by finishing Victor O'Donnell less than two minutes into the fight. Noted striker Alexander Shlemenko showed a new wrinkle in his game, submitting Zelg Galesic in the first round. On the prelims, Brett Cooper and Valdir Araujo threw down in a fast-paced affair with Cooper getting a TKO win in the third. Also the inspirational Rad Martinez made a successful Bellator debut, showing powerful wrestling and getting an impressive decision win over Brian van Hoven. Hometown hero and black belt Ailton Barbosa wasted little time in getting Ryan Keenan to the ground and submitting him early into the fight.

Bellator 49 kicked off Season 5 in exciting fashion on Sept. 10 with welterweight quarterfinal fights in Atlantic City. In the main event, Chris Lozano defeated Brent Weedman in a three-round slugfest. Also, Ben Saunders crumbled Chris Cisneros with knees to earn a third-round stoppage. The prelims brought exciting finishes as well, with Giedrius Karavackas coming back in third to TKO LeVon Maynard. Explosive featherweight Alexandre Bezerra dominated Scott Heckman en route to a second-round stoppage. In a back and forth affair, Joel Roberts put Brylan Van Artsdalen to sleep with a triangle choke.
