Bellator’s fifth season came to an end Nov. 26 at Bellator 59 from Atlantic City, New Jersey. In the bantamweight tournament final, young Eduardo Dantas moved from prospect to contender as he bested Olympian Alexis Vila in a high-paced three-round fight. Dantas will face bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky in 2012. Knockout artist Patricky “Pitbull” Freire wasted little time once the cage door shut, as he ran through longtime UFC-veteran Kurt Pellegrino to earn a TKO win less than a minute into the fight. Dropping down from middleweight, Karl Amoussou made short work of Jesus Martinez and finished the local with punches in the first round. With two champions headlining a stacked card, Bellator 58 from Hollywood, Florida had all of the makings for an incredible night and it lived up to its billing on Nov. 19. In what will go down as one of the best fights in Bellator history, Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez engaged in an instant classic and fight of the year candidate. Chandler nearly finished the fight early but Alvarez fought back to even things up in the second and third rounds. Ultimately, Chandler regained control in the fourth and submitted Alvarez to capture the lightweight title. Middleweight champion Hector Lombard continued to stake his claim as one of the most feared middleweights in MMA today, as he KOed Trevor Prangley in the second round of their catchweight affair. In a women’s fight, local Jessica Aguilar bested Lisa Ellis in an exciting three-round fight. Featherweight Marlon Sandro returned to his winning ways with a first-round arm triangle submission over Rafael Dias.
