The Top 7 Worst Guitar Solos of All Time

Guitar solos are like an open book into an artist. Once you hear any musician try to get technical on their axe you can really understand what the person is all about. You get a true understanding of how talented the artist/band is and it helps you know how seriously you should take them. But even the best of songs can be ruined by a horrible guitar solo.

7. Oasis "Champagne Supernova"

Noel Gallagher is not a good guitar player. That’s right, I said it. Anyone who thinks Noel Gallagher is a good guitar player should simply revisit his Oasis catalogue. I’m not saying the dude can’t write a catchy tune, I’m just saying he’s not as skilled as everybody makes him out to be. That's why he went ahead and let former Jam frontman Paul Weller provid the lead guitar and some of the backing vocals on the track. I like me some Jam, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Very few songs by the British supergroup are known for their amazing musicianship and the guitar playing in “Champagne Supernova” is no different. You can’t really hear all of the solo, but what you can make out sounds like someone is raping a Gibson ES-335. Yuk.

6. Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

Kurt Cobain was undoubtedly skilled at writing memorable songs and expressing serious levels of angst in his music, but it’s safe to say he didn’t really have guitar chops. The thing we all have to keep in mind is the fact that Nirvana pretty much killed off the guitar solo. After the glam scene took a dive in the late ‘80s, guitar solos weren’t really a necessity in rock tunes anymore.

The solo for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" obviously fits the song perfectly, but technically speaking, it’s just a few bars of tuneless nothing. RIP Kurt.

5. Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It"

This is solo is so simple, it’s retarded. All guitarist Jay Jay French did was take Dee Snider’s chorus and copied it as the solo. Real creative, dude. Wee Neee Neee Nee Nee Nee…Wee Neee Neee Nee Nee Nee…

4. Lil Wayne "Leather So Soft"

This really isn’t a true solo, but whoever told Lil Wayne he was allowed to play a guitar should be shot in the mouth.

The last 15 seconds of the “Leather So Soft” video shows Weezy sitting down with his iPod trying to bang out a few riffs. The horror doesn’t last long, but it’s definitely enough to make your ears bleed. The guitar isn’t even in tune! Stick to rappin’ Carter, you seem to be really really good at it.

This could not be more wrong! The guitar "solo" in Eight Miles High, by the Byrds is by far, hands-down the most wretched and pathetic application of six taught strings in the history of sound.

It literally sounds like the guitarist got his fingers stuck in the strings.

There's a video on the site SillyReviews that features some music that would make you want to drown your kids. That would make #1 worst on my list, just like their product reviews that make absolutely no sense!!

Don't forget Neil Young in "Southern Man"...a dissonant, painful solo. His worst of many bad ones. What about Johnny Ramone's one-noter on "I Wanna Be Sedated"...or the Dead Milkmen's (acknowledged) bad solo on "Punk Rock Girl". Lots of badness out there.

This is a stupid list, or at least a stupid title. Top 7 Non-technical guitar solos would sound more fitting, with a little revision. How about a top 7 minimalist guitar solos? I'm a long time player and a huge fan of some of the incredible technicality I've seen over the years, but that in no ways implies a solo without 16th note arpeggios and finger taps is bad.
I think Smells like Teen Spirit and American Woman epitomize this; it's about making a cool sound, making music.

I heard someone do something that sounded like Durst's solo in the stall next to me this morning.
If I was five years old and found my uncle's electric guitar, picked it up and paused between each of the 5 notes I was brave enough to strum out I'd be beaming with pride knowing that I was at least as good as Durst.
I hope the Jimi Hendrix zombie awakes and eats Fred's brain....or did he already?

Nirvana and Twisted Sister are just trying to make music they are not trying to out do each other or other artist on guitar so why are they on this list . Those guitar players are called neoclassical or shredders and they use techniques such as alternative picking through to sweep picking, sweep picking being the toughest or one of the toughest techniques. These are good guitar players in my opinion graded on creativity, longevity uniqueness, and technicality eddie vanhalen, chuck shuldiner, Malmsteen, Michael Angelo Batio, Jeff loomis, and finally Dime Bag Darrel.

I think Boredomfrom 'The Buzzcocks' guitar solo would fit in this list pretty well.

Champagne Supernova is perfect from the segue out of Morning Glory to every fricking note and word played. Beautiful music, still gets me even now. Some people just have no clue at all. Worst ever? The Carpenters' Say Goodbye to Love'. End the song when the solo starts. Closely followed by Queen's 'I want to break free'. If only we could Brian.

OMG. FRED DURST SUCKED BIIIG TIME. IT HURT MY HEAD, IT WAS SO BAD.

BUT, ALL THE LEGENDS (JIMI HENDRICKS, ERIC CLAPTON, PETE TOWNSEND, ETC.) HAVE HAD THEIR SUCKY MOMENTS.

I agree that Kurt was no "guitar god" but even a look at the most basic theory can see that he's soloing with the F minor pentatonic scale with a few notes taken from the F aeolian scale. So really it's not random noises over a few bars at all or however you put it. actually a nicely put together solo for the song in my opinion.

for supposedly bad solo's, they do have seem to have stuck in your head to the extent that you are able to recall them, for better or for worse, for your article. even though some of the solos are not technical, they all have a way of sticking in your head, if you had a better understanding of composing then you would know it takes an uncanny knack and a lot of natural intuition to write a solo which is infectious and instantly recognisable. music does not have to supply its own credentials to be be considered quality, and the songs which have emotionally moved millions, that you've chosen to slate, are valued far more than this lazy, unimaginative, forgettable, parasitic and cliched bit of "journalism". its a lot easier to pick on and destroy art that other people value to get a reaction than it is to create something worthwhile yourself, which you demonstrate with to aplomb only the ignorant can muster.
