Deadliest Warrior

The Top Seven UFC Warriors of All Time

Tuesday night Spike TV's brand new original series Deadliest Warrior premieres at 10pm, so I figured it's a better time than ever to take a few minutes and hash out who the all-time greatest UFC warriors are.

7. BJ Penn

image

One of only a few fighters to hold titles at two different weight classes, "The Prodigy" has an unnatural ability to inflict pain on the lightweight insubordinates. He has wins over Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver, and Sean Sherk, all of whom have held titles of their own.

His recent loss to St-Pierre has caused him to slide a little on the all-time list, but none of that changes what Penn has done in the lightweight class and, for now, he securely holds his spot at the back of my list.

6. Royce Gracie

Without Royce Gracie, it's fair to say that mixed martial arts as we know it today would not exist. The sheer dominance of which Gracie dispatched opponent after opponent in the early days the UFC caught the attention of eager fans across the globe.

Gracie beat insurmountable odds with his unmatched jiu-jitsu skills and submitted much larger opponents en route to tournament victories at UFC 1, 2, and 4. Gracie was responsible for some of the most technical battles in the early years of the UFC and provided legitimacy in the midst of a blood sport. Without the groundwork laid by Gracie, the UFC may never found the foothold it was looking for and could very well have fallen to the wayside.

There is a little bit a Gracie's soul in every card the UFC holds and for that he always be remembered as an all-time great.

5. Matt Hughes

image

In one of the most competitive weight classes ever, Matt Hughes is the most decorated champion in UFC history. With a staggering 42 overall wins and a 9-2 record in title fights, Matt Hughes ruled the welterweight class for so long, the belt was practically named after him. Early in his career Hughes was charged with the task outgrowing the shadow cast by his predecessor and mentor Pat Miletich. It was an undertaking that would have crumbled most challengers, but Hughes took it on with all cylinders and never looked back. He will never again be thought of as "Little Pat."

Over his journey he recorded wins over Carlos Newton, Frank Trigg, Georges St-Pierre, and Hayato Sakurai, but perhaps the most symbolic win was his TKO victory over the legendary Royce Gracie. With it, he officially ushered out the old and welcomed the new, and though he could be controversial outside the cage, there is no denying that he was a force to be reckoned with inside it, which is why he deserves to be considered on the all-time list.

Look, this is a solid list. Tito(fritto), Cro cop, Belfort, barely deserve a mention in the top 14 and dont' deserve to be on here, like some of you have written. Rampage does! Sombody wrote that Fritto made this sport known?LOL!!! Fritto is a cry baby who made his money fighting Bouncers, not true MMA talent. Fritto would have been destroyed in Pride and ducked Chuck his whole career. Who did he beat that is headline talent? Fritto is a joke, get a clue and get off Fritto's jock, that's his hooker wifes job...........

In reference to the upcoming match in Montreal - please - it's Montreal, Quebec, not Montreal, Canada. It would be like us referring to cities in the U.S. without the state name - Chicago, U.S.A., Phoenix, U.S.A. - instead of Chicago, Illinois or Phoenix, Arizona. Not only that, half the people in Quebec don't even want to be considered Canadians but refer to their province (or state, as in the U.S.) as their country. Thanks for the opportunity to mention this.

Silva vs Henderson - a "massacre"? LOL

Silva has won a few fights in the UFC and looks pretty good. Very few of those few wins have been against highly regarded opponents.

this list is grossly misleading all the way through. very few of the athletes today would have actually have been competition for early days of ufc. certainly cotour and a few others. chucks style would have been good. one man ,several fights in one night, no weight classes clearly royce is #1 matt should not be on the list ,although he is in fact a champion he would not have faired well in the old days.. silva ,yes. gsp, yes.. although i do not like ortiz he has been in both worlds and done well he should be included. so i dont know who created this very, very partial list as the greatest ever but the majority of the list would have to contain at 60% of the first ufc and 40% from current to be accurate. mir, lesner would have done well in the old ufc format. I know that for whatever reasons people dont like to give rashad the respect he deserves but i would put him on the list before a couple of the ones listed due to the fact that #1 he's undefeated #2 he has faught very good opposition #he is a champion. not to include this guy is like not including rocky marciano as one of the greatest because he retired as champion that arguement is just as rediculous as not including evans. and finally my freinds a lot of you guys are young and you only see whats in front of you. become students of the game know your history and believe me it will make you a better fighter. you can learn something from all generations not just the one that is right in front of you.. later gentlemen be well, and may the fighting spitit be yours. dragon

The people complaining about Silva not earning the top spot because he's never been in a war need to think about this - He hasn't been in a war because he's THAT good. Nobody can touch him much less push him enough in a fight to consider it a war. I'd like to see Anderson - GSP. That would be a good fight.

I don't understand how Penn thought that he would have scored a victory in his last fight against St. Pierre. Penn looked to be very out of shape in comparison to his physique in the Stevenson fight, where he looked to be in top physical form.

If he wants to beat St. Pierre then he's going to have to train very hard, or just get lucky. He definitely can't rely on his moniker and ego to win the fights for him.

first of all bj penn shouldnt be on the list he is a bitch he has no cardio what so ever and hasnt even defended his belt yet wanting to fight gsp come on now he is retarded also .... imo Royce Gracie should be #1 - Anderson Silva #2 - George st. Pierre #3 - Randy Couture #4 - Matt Hughes #5 - Frank Mirr #6 - and id say Vitor Belfort Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddle tie for #7 man im only 21 and i fight so maybe i think different but ive seen alot of fights. and once bj penn loses his belt to florian i cant wait for the rematch with sherk maybe this time the referee wont let him call the fight.

I agree with 1,2,3, and 4. silva hasn't been in any battles. And what about the real warriors mentioned by #4? If not for them, there would be no UFC. And as far as Gracie goes(and that's a long way) what about the warrior that took him out that day? No one has mentioned Kimo. Rework your list, make it a top ten then I might agree. They are all superb, but a top ten would be better.

There are certainly some good names on this list, especially Couture and Gracie. But the list is too geared for the current crop of guys, with Gracie being the only nod to the history of the sport. How could you leave out Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock, or Don Frye? Anyone who's seen some of Don Frye's fights in the UFC knows that he was an incredible "warrior" in his prime. And Shamrock - while I may not like him, he was undoubtedly the man during his prime too. As far as the people on the list now, Couture and Gracie should be 1 and 2, in whatever order. Silva and GSP have not done as much over an extended time as Couture and Gracie.

Ok, while I agree with most of the people on the list ( maybe not in the same spot as I would have put them) GSP as the #2 fighter in UFC top 7?!?!?! That is almost insulting. I'm not just saying this because I'm a BJ Penn fan either. Yes he should be on the list, he is a great ( and greasy HAHA) fighter, But to put him above Gracie, Hughes, Liddell, and Couture...I don't think so.
