The Top 7 Most Overrated Singers Of All Time

Hype is one hell of a thing. It’s pretty mind-blowing when die hard music fans treat certain artists as if they were some kind of God-like entity. This, in turn makes the artist believe that they are something special and deserve all of the love they are receiving. There are a few bubbles here that are in need of some serious bursting.

By Dustin Sussman

The following article does not represent the opinions of Spike TV or its affiliates.

7. Amy Winehouse

image

Mark my words right now, Amy will never release another relevant song in the history of her career. Why, you ask? Because she had an unbelievably weak voice to begin with and she has now smoked enough crack to tear down Method Man’s iron lung.

I do understand that the Grammys aren’t really relevant anymore, but I am sick and tired of U.K. singers getting critical acclaim for mimicking classic American soul stars of the ‘60s and ‘70s. It is absolutely impossible to match the brilliant sounds of Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin. I’m not saying the music is bad, it just doesn’t come close to the original product that they’re taking inspiration from. If I want to enjoy the classic sounds of Motown I’ll listen to the classic sounds of Motown, thank you very much.

I know she's kind of wasted here, but the woman is wasted every moment of the day.

6. Chris Martin

image

For all of those people out there who think this overrated ass-clown has a good set of pipes needs to listen closely to his vocal work in a live setting. This man is all studio production. Real singers sound better live and Chris is a perfect example of what s**t sounds like. Every single time I’ve listened to a Coldplay live performance I can’t make out a single word this dude is saying. I think Mr. Martin needs to stop bouncing around the stage like a hyper first grader and concentrate more on his breath support techniques. Robert Plant farts better notes in his sleep.

5. Cher

image

I had no idea a human being was able to create the sound of frogs f***ing and fighting to the death all at the same time with their voice, but somehow Cher pulled it off.

I will honestly admit that Cher belted out a few decent karaoke numbers during her Sonny and Cher variety show heyday, but when she decided to keep releasing music past the 1970s the s**t really hit the fan. The idea that this old broad has released over 25 albums that have sold over 100 million copies around the world is simply unbelievable. Every time Cher opens her mouth to sing I am convinced a choir of heavily sedated bullfrogs are gonna come out marching right on cue. I assume Vegas tourists are really into watching has-been plastic-surgerized freaks bang out their greatest for a ridiculous sum.

4. Mick Jagger

image

There is no doubt that Mick is a great songwriter, but we all know there are a slew of Stones songs that have some seriously suspect vocal work. Yeah, I know that the guy is an amazing showman, but at certain times he really can't sing to save his life. Being one of the greatest frontmen of all time doesn’t necessarily give you a pass in the singing department.

After watching numerous live shows of the Stones I’ve come to the conclusion that Keith Richards has a better voice than Mr. Jagger. It’s almost unbearable to listen to Mick try to stretch random vocal notes with his fake New Orleans accent. Sometimes it feels like the only enjoyable vocals from the Rolling Stones are their amazing multiple harmonies.

You have christina on here but not CHERYL FRIGGEN COLE?!?! Cheryl Cant Sing,She Cant Dance and She Isnt "Fit" Either, She has a lolly pop head (fat head skinny body) She needs to get some fat on her that girl, shes as skinny as a rake! But its about the singing, and she cant sing, i know people that cant sing better than her, she never sings live so that shows that her true voice isnt good enough and whens shes recorded for her CD its changed , so yeah she should be No#1

I love GN'R to death, they're the band that got me into music, but I have to agree on Axl being totally overrated. He sounds absolutely atrocious live. He's also got one of the biggest, if not THE biggest, ego in rock history. If you read about the shit he's pulled in his career, it definitely casts a new light on him. I also share sentiments will Will M. Cloone: I believe it's more appropriate to just call them Axl Rose's solo project nowadays, because it just isn't GN'R without at least two or three of the original members. It's almost a joke to keep calling them GN'R.

Mick Jagger's vocals are perfect for the stones's,he's not seen as a great singer anyway,

Mick's vocals work on Angie is awesome though,

'Bono Simply Cannot Sing",Bono just attempts to sing.

his vocal range is as narrow as it gets

Bono's duet with Frank Sinatra, who's probably the best popular singer ever,is laughable and totally embarassing.

Is this some kind of joke??? Your list is ok until you got to number 1. Then you started to do best singers. Axl is the greatest EVER. If smoking lots of cigs makes ya sound like that, then im picking up the habit and making a career change...

I like your list for the most part. Chris Martin and Bono have to be the 2 most pretentious fuckers on this planet. I think you need Madonna on your list to complete it though.

Agree with Martin and Axl, but Bono? Do you actually know anything about music? The guy has incredible pipes, and has recorded some of the greatest vocals in modern music.
And instead of Jagger you should have put Morrison.
And instead of Cher you should have put Madonna.
Christina is not over rated, she has a great voice. Her material sucks.

    This list is a joke.

I could not agree more with whoever wrote this article! I've always hated Axl, I can't wait to hear about Amy's inevitable drug related death, the Stones suck balls, U2 suck balls, Coldplay; although quite popular among the gay and lasbian community, happen to suck as well and Christina's mouth is good for only one thing....

    and it aint singing.

Cher's hot for a 70 year old, never really took her seriously enough as a singer to form an opinion either way, but I'm sure she sucks as well.

I'd love to see your list of the most underrated singers of all time, food for thought.

To those who don't agree with me; I'm right, you are wrong, go fuck your mothers.

@ Hazy_Rob. Nice. Thanks for the all CAPS too, good stuff. I think these lists might just be the thing for you. f you actually read what I said, I said I enjoy stuff on the site, but don't pretend to have the expertise that you don't. if you're going to use "top" and "worst of all time" or "best of 2008" have a sense of what you're talking about, there's a lack of knowledge here about movies and artists who are much worse and better. I'm saying do what you guys do, which is Spike.com stuff, not New York Times stuff.

and yeah I saw Chris Martin and fundamentally disagree - I like his music, but hadn't bothered to check out your second page except that I knew Christina was there from previous posts, and also wrong with her - she's got some chops even if she messes with the songs too much. Axl's most recent album maybe most over hyped of all time - there's an accurate assessment that can be argued.. So as I checked out page #2 - Bono? Really? Get your head out of you ass.

Yet another misguided attempt on a best of / worst of list "Of All Time" - really?

If everything is going to be "Man Show"-esque to fit tough Spike guy image then title it that way "Manswers, etc..". At least it'll be truer to the types of reviews and can be enjoyed with a grain of salt. You want to do a top 10 UFC pound for pound, go for it, a top ten comedies by decade, by all means, I'd like to read that. But when you try to get into nuance whether in movie, TV, or music, you lose cred. Winehouse may be a train wreck but she has talent and Cher creepy and outdated and more relevant in her day, but has / had talent, and Mick Jagger most overrated of all time? Really? Do you guys sit around and do bong hits and Shotgunning beers and jot all this wisdom down? This is by no means an accurate list. Post cool vids, interesting celeb news, bikini polls if that works, but leave real reviewing to others. Harsh, yes, but true.

Axl Rose sounded better on the Use Your Illusion Albums then Appetite for Destruction. I agree with your selection of Amy Winehouse and Mick Jagger but Axl Rose. I am very upset about this. There are just so many other performers that fit this description of overrated. Whoever wrote this article please leave a response and tell me some of the artists you listen to. I am interested to see who you would qualify as a great singer.

I understand that Christina goes over the top with "woahooowoahooo"s and such, but does that mean she doesn't deserve the credit she gets as singer. She still demonstates superior vocal skills, which doesn't fit the tite "overrated singer".

Wow, totally agree with your number one choice. Axl is completely over-rated. He is a completely one-dimensional singer. In addition, its not Guns 'n' Roses if you're the only member left... sorry Axl, but you don't have that kind of star power. The musicians involved are just doing it for the paycheck.

All your other choices were spot on as well.

As to Christina, yes -- totally agree. I'd make one suggestion though: you don't need to "Go to two minutes in to see what I mean..." from the very beginning she blows it. That song has gorgeous lines to it -- and she rips them apart from the very, very beginning and just massacres the song. What a shame. There's nothing worse than a singer who puts everything but the kitchen sink into the first 12 bars of a song ..it's like, letting the cat out of the proverbial musical interpretation bag.
