The Top 7 Most Miscast Movie Roles

Nothing is quite as annoying as an actor who’s been horribly miscast in a movie. Sometimes, however, the casting is so bad that, at a certain point, the heinousness of their performance becomes a freak show to ogle at.

By Nathan Bloch

The following article does not represent the opinions of Spike TV or its affiliates.

7. Sofia Coppola in The Godfather Part III

An Ode to the Godfather Part III

No, she didn’t have the lead role, and no, she clearly didn’t pursue an acting career after her cringe-worthy performance in this film. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t tarnish every single scene she was in in Godfather III. She is so god-awful that (spoiler coming up!) by the time she finally gets shot at the end, you’re cheering for the assassin. Not only that, you’re actually wishing the assassin could have gotten his s**t together about sixty minutes earlier.

It really destroys the tragedy of the film when what Michael (Al Pacino) loves most happens to be the most obnoxious little twerp on the face of the earth, so that when she is taken from him our sadness is defused like a bomb.

Stiff line deliveries, total absence of a believable character, and the knowledge that the awful turd who ruined what could’ve been a triumphant end to an incredible trilogy is the director’s daughter all combine to focus our wrath on Sofia Coppola whenever the Godfather movies are invoked. Thanks for being a stain on the satin sheets of awesomeness that were Godfather I and II, Sofia.

6. Halle Berry in Catwoman

Catwoman - Theatrical Trailer

This casting was ill-advised on so many different levels. Beyond the most obvious knock against Berry in this role, the woman simply cannot act. The “character” she created for this role is so paper-thin you can see right through it: Catwoman’s character traits consist of talking in her best phone-sex voice and walking like a stripper. Would this movie have been horrible even if they hadn’t cast Halle Berry? Probably. Is it that much worse because she’s in it? Definitely.

5. Mark Wahlberg in The Happening, We Own the Night, Shooter, Planet of the Apes, etc.

Inside Reel: Planet of the Apes

So at this point I think it’s obvious Mark Wahlberg isn’t about to win any lifetime achievement awards in acting. He publicly bemoaned getting miscast in Planet of the Apes (agreed, he should’ve been one of the head monkeys) as if that were the reason for his complete and total suckiness in that film.

After his horrible performance in The Happening (his stilted line readings and cartoonish facial expressions make me suspect he’d do better as a male model…oh, wait…) I suspect we’ll be hearing more of the same. The fact of the matter is that Mark Wahlberg gets “miscast” in every movie where he isn’t running, punching, shooting and fighting bad guys in one form or another – with the exception of a few films, such as I Heart Huckabees and Boogie Nights (in which he plays an empty-headed naïf, but he plays it well).

The thing is, Wahlberg figured out a long time ago that he delivers his lines best when he’s out of breath and/or in the midst of extreme physical exertion. It’s his “trick”, if you like. And I gotta say, I don’t like. Not one little bit.

Marky Mark should never be cast any anything that requires real acting. His best movie ever was Big Hit, and that was because it was tongue-in-cheek action.

If you're gonna talk about Spiderman you should really add Kristen Dunst and Toby Maguire to James Franco. Practically the whole series has been miscast. Spiderman has been ruined thanks to all their terrible acting.

I'm not sure you really know what you're talking about.. some of these films were just bad movies and badly written (Catwoman, Planet of the Apes...), some great (The Aviator, Gangs of New York yes even with Cameron Diaz although usually her range is comedy / romantic comedy she did fine and the movie didn't suffer overall), some ok / decent (Dracula)...

and overall Franco did just fine considering his character's purpose, Spiderman and sequels was good entertainment and well-done though not of same caliber as Dark Knight of course..

Where is leonardo dicaprio? That guy should never play in an action movie. Can you honestly imagine him punching someone in real life?

I think we can all agree that the spidey series was absolutely horrible but there is a silver lining, do you remember Batman and Robin and The Hulk...yeah God awful. However the successors kicked ass. A horrible Comic book movie can always be revamped, recast and end up as a Blockbuster. BTW Topher Grace as Venom? Really?

I have to agree with EOK. A good portion of these movies are just terrible anyway (although i must agree Marky Mark did an awful job in The Happening). However, I can't say a role has really been miscasted unless someone like Michael Clarke Duncan was picked instead of someone like Dakota Fanning for a movie.

And for the record, Di Caprio did a great job in the Aviator.

Being miscast is a different distinction from simply turning in a bad performance or more generally being a bad actor. It implies that someone was somehow wrong (too young, too old, too tall, too short, too fat, etc...) for the role they were chosen to portray. You could perhaps make the argument that someone was miscast because they lack the acting range required for a particular role but I think that would be a stretch. You come closest to identifying an actor being miscast with Leonardo in The Aviator. Except that you apparently know little about Howard Hughes who was something of a child prodigy who achieved fame at a very young age thus making the youthful looking DiCaprio an appropriate casting choice contrary to your argument.

How can this list leave off BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES with Tom Hanks playing a soulless Wall Street stock jockey, and Bruce Willis playing a British reporter?

They took a book that was a brutally accurate social commentary on the 80s and turned it into something as toothless as an episode of ALF.

It's a toss-up for me: Keanu Reeves in Dracula or Keanu Reeves in Dangerous Liaisons. I guess it was kind of the same role, which is why it doesn't make sense that the same mistake was made twice.
Maybe in Hollywood, there is a community charity drive to help Keanu act better by placing him next to Cinematic giants like Gary Oldman and John Malkovich.

Yeah, this is a horrible list. i don't EVER think of Diaz in Gangs. It would be the last thing I think of during a great movie.. who really gave a crap about her part. I agree with someone above about Tom Hanks in Davinci Code. If you read the book, it SCREAMS Cambell Scott, who I'm sure would've signed on for less and made it a better film, and you could've cast a better, mmm Albino.

Markie Mark in Shooter is fine, but really, ANYONE in an M Night Shallayaman movie is miscast, because he shouldn't be doing the movies. After Unbreakable, which was iffy at best, M Nights movies have become Unbearable. Crappy list.. FAIL

I really don't see how one could claim Leonardo DiCaprio was miscast in Aviator, in which he gave an excellent performance. Even more baffling is the idea that Blanchett was miscast as Hepburn. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a modern actress who would have done a better job.

Mark Walberg can be okay, it's just that when he's the lead of a movie it usually turns out wretchedly. Especially if he's supposed to be some smoldering bad-ass. What worked well enough in the Departed, for example, became terrible whenever he had to speak more than a few lines.

Wow this list is hit or miss. A Marky mark is a fine actor who has found his niche and plays to it so the roles mentioned outside planet of the apes are wrong choices on the bloggers part. Second Dicaprio was fantastic in Gangs of New York it was his coming out from titanic, get your ducks in a row and maybe you'll see it.

You're taste in movies is awful and quite frankly you fail to grasp basic character motivation. Try not to attack performances that have won Oscars and maybe spend a little time researching these snarky little lists. Being condescending only works when you actually know what you're talking about.

Ok, I semi-agree with James Franco in the Spider-man trilogy, but you are completely MISSING Topher Grace as Venom. This was by far the biggest casting mistake I have EVER seen on the big screen. Not only is he a puny little b***ch but the way they portrayed Venom in that movie was painful to watch. He was by far my favorite comic book character growing up and when i see topher grace's face every time Venom appears on screen I want to cringe. Worst Marvel movie EVER, alongside of DareDevil. SpiderMan 1 was sooo good and 2 was solid, but WTF were they thinking when making three?? JEEZ!!!

Does ANYONE agree with this? None of these are spot on. Catwoman was just a poor film, as with Planet of the Apes, and compaired with Parts 1 and 2 Godfather 3 is a stinker all around. James Franco was not the mis-cast, Topher Grace (sorry Topher) so obviously was. Gangs, and Aviator were both very well played, and I know it's hip to Bash on DiCapprio but I just don't get it. Have you ever seen him in a bad role? Keanu is your only hit on this list, but only because it was unexpected, after you get past the "what the hell is Keanu Reeves doing in this movie" stage you see that he's not so bad in it.

It is just you bashing all your 'favorite' targets over and over again. How your articles always end up on the flash board on the home page on this website blows me away.

I'll give you Keanu and Diaz and that is it. It takes skill to write something as wrong and worthless as this article, so take pride in that. I only want to leave one important comment so I'm going to ignore the fact that you have no understanding of how movies are made. The comment is: Cate Blanchett was amazing in The Aviator. Rarely do you see actors & characters meet so well that it not only enhances the actors performance but it elevates the entire movie. Take my advice, if there is ever a casting call for "Huge Worthless Douchebag" go for it. You'll be perfect.

For a commentary on miscast movie roles, this was terribly disappointing. For any form of writing, it was even worse. Clearly, Mr. Bloch does not understand the difference between being miscast and delivering a poor performance. Often, these two go hand in hand, but in the case of The Aviator, I'll have to interject. As many others have said before me, DiCaprio's performance in Scorsese's biopic about Howard Hughes was quite incredible. Despite your opinion of that particular "miscast," the hard work DiCaprio and Hepburn put in such challenging roles really came into fruition very early within their respective first appearances in the film. While I may agree with some of your other calls regarding miscasts, I won't hesitate to remark that many of your opinions and the ways through which you begin to justify your claims are just thoroughly unsubstantiated. Cameron Diaz was miscast in Gangs of New York because she was not an actress that could fulfill such a challenging period role, not because she couldn't "decide [whether to be hot or not.]" You think DiCaprio's performance was poor in Gangs? Which film are you going to see this Christmas opening, Marley
