The Top 10 Worst Comic Book Casting Mistakes

Comic books are all the rage in the movie industry, but they don’t always have the right man or woman behind the mask. Some people are lucky they don’t read comics. They do not suffer when 30 years of waiting ends in disappointment. For the purists it’s never that simple. One poor casting job can blind them to any positives, and the following actors did not merely betray the franchise, they were doomed from the start.

Source: Warner Bros.

10. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool (Wade Wilson) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

image

Source: 20th Century Fox

I like to think they gave Deadpool his name because it’s easy to imagine him standing knee deep in a flood of corpses, all sliced in half and with bullets in their brains. Now, is that the extreme guy you think of when you look at Ryan Reynolds? Is he the type of cold-blooded assassin who leaves his blades behind when he raises the roof off a sorority house after faking an engagement to Sandra Bullock? Reynolds might have something to offer the comic book universe. Maybe as Flash, or even Havok, but for the sake of all that’s good and Marvel not Deadpool.

9. Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias) in Watchmen

image

Source: Warner Bros.

There is nothing coy or James Bond about Veidt, which is what Goode mysteriously brought to the character. Fans noticed immediately when the first in-costume still was released. It’s not mostly Goode’s fault, he didn’t have the look or the build to fit the massive mind and physique of the super-hero tycoon. Veigt was insanely toned mentally and physically. Goode was plain soft, and cocky in a bad way. It was Veigt’s demeanor what made his ultimate decision so shocking. He wasn’t really hiding anything. He was the same person on every page. Ozymandias did his deed for the better good. It felt like Goode was just having a good time.

8. Cillian Murphy as The Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane) in Batman Begins

image

Source: Warner Bros.

Scarecrow was a smart villain to work into Batman’s origin story, but Cillian Murphy was a puzzling choice to play the disturbed Jonathan Crane. We can forget the designers turning what could have been a fantastically terrifying costume into a 99-cent-store Halloween mask, but Murphy added a sense of style and sultriness that could not have been farther from the source material. In fact, it was Crane’s inability to deal with commonplace social interactions that led to his obsession with controlling people’s emotions: most specifically fear. He was a frazzled lunatic. Christopher Nolan transformed him into some bio-terrorist Hugh Hefner.

7. Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson in Spider-man

image

Source: Sony Pictures Entertainment

We’ve seen the fashionably frumpy Dunst play the seductive girl next door, so it wasn’t a stretch for an acting assignment at first. After weighing two movies worth of whining, we had a hard time rooting for Spider-Man to save her in part three. Spidey wore the tights, but with her performance, she made sure she wore the pants. Dunst confused “spunky” for “airhead,” did her best acting when she was screaming, and even blew the lid off plot details months before the producers intended.

6. Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane in Superman Returns

image

Source: Warner Bros.

Casting Bosworth as Lane is like casting Posh Spice as Professor McGonagall in the next Harry Potter movie. Then you drive the stake deeper by telling the fans she’s continuing the role from the previous films like nothing happened. Age aside, Bosworth still doesn’t come close to portraying the feisty Metropolis reporter. There’s a reason Lane worked herself to the top of a mostly male-driven industry at the time of Superman’s first publishing. She had a take-no-prisoners style of reporting, justifying her attendance of nearly every traumatic event in Metropolis. Going from Margot Kidder to Kate Bosworth may be easy on the eyes, but you don’t need x-ray vision to see she doesn’t fit.

WOOOW! this writer has no Idea WTF he's talk about when it comes to Deadpool. He evidently has little to NO understanding of the character. Yes, he's a total bad ass and one of the best fighters of the Marvel Universe, but he's know for his constant joking and trash talking. Ryan is the most perfect casting for a character EVER. Deadpool, known for breaking of the 4th wall, has called out Ryan Reynolds as the perfect person to play him multiple times (In the comics and in the letters sections of his books) and many years before he was ever cast for the part. David Goyer (writer and director of Blade 3) and Ryan have out and out admitted that in Blade 3, he was basically playing Deadpool just with a different character's name.

Now while you might have some valid points on your other characters choices, it's hard to take them seriously after the complete debacle you gave us with your interpretation of who Deadpool is. It completely destroyed your credibility on this subject. It would be like speaking at convention on Astro Physics and starting out your speech with "Gravity is caused by midichlorians". Everything you say after that may be true, but no one is gonna take you seriously. To quote the Twitter message i got about this Article, EPIC FAIL!

I haven't seen all of Wolverine, but for the few minutes I saw Reynolds playing Deadpool, I was pretty satisfied, except for the part about his face being hidiously scarred.. they left that one out, for some reason, and I think thats one of the things that makes Deadpool so awesome; it's part of the reason he's so brutal.. and I think Murphy was a good choice for Scarecrow too, even though they were right about his not being socially apt and didn't include that trait in the movie.. Scarecrow was one of my favorite villains as a kid when I watched the cartoons, and they kinda fouled it up by just having him with a mask and being really suave but still evil at the same time.. I would have liked to see a more brutally psychopathic lunatic like he was supposed to be, but I agree with what they said about him being a smart choice for the origin of Batman, it makes sense. and rkeegan was dead on about the ben affleck playing Daredevil.. that's just a full blown "wtf" .. Halle Berry was a good pick for this list too. I like her movies, but she was terrible as storm, doesnt even try to make the right accent, she doesn't have the physical presence that storm has (tall, toned) and she seems like a daycare teacher with her understanding and love for everything with a pulse.. storm was all wisdom and vengeance at the same time

Ryan Reynolds was one of thebest castings they ever could have done. Deadpool was known as the Merc with the Mouth. He was a badass, yes, but he was also a smartass. In the comic books, Deadpool even made a comment about Ryan Reynolds being a favorite of his. They are dead wrong about him being a bad casting for Deadpool.

As has been said a few times by now, Ryan Reynolds was a great choice for Deadpool, but not just for personality either. To quote Deadpool,
"Hey, if you looked like Ryan Reynolds crossed with a Shar-pei, You'd understand!" Cable and Deadpool, Issue #2, page 14
And even watching other rolls Ryan Reynolds is in it becomes obvious that it was a good choice on their part for the casting. Just a bit of info, Deadpool didn't pic the name because of any bad-ass connotations, he took it because when he was in the Workshop (Where Weapon X sent it's "Failures") there was a gambling pool as to when others there would die, AKA The Dead-pool. To summarize, in both attitude and appearance (According to the fictional man himself) Ryan Reynolds is as close to Deadpool as we can get without just having the whole thing CG. Perhaps further research into the specific subject matter before writing will keep people from acting out in this manner. (I am referring to myself, I think I've been a little curt.) Some of what has been done to Deadpools abilities I can understand, him being given the teleportation would be better to look at than him constantly reaching for his belt to do so. Cyclops' Optic blast however. . . No, just no. Even still I personally am looking forward to the upcoming Deadpool movie (Unless I've been misinformed on that).

The discussion of Deadpool reads like someone who hasn't paid much attention to the character. Anyone who has read his books (and not just his cameos as I suspect the article's writer has) knows Reynolds was near perfect, his stream of conciousness commentary and near schizophrenic demeanor are as close to what Deadpool would be like as a real person could be and still be believable.

In short, the writer really has no idea WTF they're talking about.

I would comment on the rest of the choices, but when the first one is so obviously and irrefutably wrong, it's hard to be motivated to waste time reading any further, so I didn't.

PS Spike, fire this retard, thanks.

Thoughts on the article and some of the comments...

Yes. Elektra was Greek. Read the books.

Cillian Murphy is a solid actor and was a great part of Batman Begins. The dreamy scientist may not have been the original characterization of Scarecrow in the comics, but it worked for the film in my opinion.

I read/heard Topher was cast to be a mirror image of Toby. Makes sense, but it's not like Venom in the comics as was discussed. The first two Spidey films were pretty fun, especially the second.

Thanks to Joel Schumaker, the Clooney Batman film was a disaster from the start. All you have to see is the nipples on the Batsuit in the first photo here... in fact, has anyone seen Chris O'Donnell since the 1990's?

Don't love Kelsey Grammar in general, but he was a pretty good Beast. He wasn't in a great film and the X-Men movies have disappointed overall.

Affleck is just a mediocre actor, and that Daredevil screenplay left much to be desired. Would be cool to see another actor play DD in an upcoming Marvel film, perhaps in the Avengers series.

The Dark Knight sets the bar for comic book films.

Looking forward to the next Iron Man, as the first was excellent.

Good list, I agree with nearly everything. Except...

Reynolds is a great Deadpool. His shtick is a smartass, and that's what Deadpool is, The Merc with the Mouth. His build is pretty good for it, so had he been able to suit up and be DEADPOOL rather the stupid fucking abomination he became in that movie, it would work damn near perfectly. More problems with the movie than the casting of Reynolds. And if you must pinpoint casting errors in that movie, Gambit takes it, hands down.

Murphy played Scarecrow well, what you cite here are errors in writing, which I thought fresh and fitting for the film¿s tone, and costume design, which I agree could have been much better.

I thought Garner and Berry were acceptable, though you¿re right; they were chosen just as Hollywood vixens to put asses in the seats. These two were ok cuz they are talented. Alba and Bosworth were HORRIBLE choices. And Dunst as MJ pissed me off since I first heard about the movie, she in no way should have even been considered for MJ. But you know who would have been great? A young Nikki Cox, man, that¿s a perfect look.

But I digress. Your number one choice in Topher Grace may be among the top gaffes in the history of film, not just comic book film. He was untrue to the character and acted horribly in my opinion. Everything he did from taunting Parker as a photographer to his Venom quips was incredibly forced. Just bad.

Good list though, thanks, and I also would like to see a top ten comic book casting list. And to beat the dead horse, may I suggest Ledger as the Joker be on it?

you're right. nobody thought arnold as mr. freeze would be taken seriously. same with george clooney as batman, alicia silverstone as batgirl, chris o'donnell as robin, and uma thurman as poison ivy. that whole movie was one long, campy batman romp. also happens to be one of my favorites precisely because of that.

It's as if they don't even LOOK at the comics when they get to casting the actors/actresses for the parts. There are some spot on picks but for the most part, they're off by a wide margin and it up to the people portraying the character to make it believable.

I tend to disagree with a few of the choices...

    1) Reynolds: Deadpool isn't just a mindless killer leaving people in 'pools of blood'... he is the Merc with the Mouth... a wisecracking smart-ass who is often bested by those far less capable than himself because of his mental instability...

    2) Murphy: Scarecrow has gone through a wide range of characterizations throughout the many years of Batman... and Murphy does a very admirable job of portraying the tortured mind of Dr. Crane...

As far as those left off the list...

    1) Ben Allfeck... he was terrible as Daredevil...

    2) Nicolas Cage... who thought it would be a good idea to have him play Johnny Storm as a rip-off of his character from Leaving Las Vegas?

    3) Collin Ferrel... Bullseye should be a scary son of a bitch... not a little prissy boy who spends more time posing than he does killing...

    Just my two bits...

Keanu Reeves as John Constantine? Um....no. No no no no no. If you absolutely have to make him an American (and you don't), the only acceptible choice is Dennis Leary. Imagine him in a rumpled trench with a pack of Silk Cuts...yeah.

This person who wrote the article doesn't have his Comic book knowledge together. Elektra is not Latin, She's Greek(As it's mentioned in the movie) In X-men one, It show's Rouge @ home in Louisiana.(last time I checked, that was the south.) Also, Gambit has a LA accent(not a very good one though)

I think most of this list is good, I think one that could easily have been on here right after elektra was Ben Affleck as Daredevil then again thats not really fair cause it's just too obvious, all the spider mans were right and I'd go even as far as to say that Toby's appointment as Peter Parker didn't really make sense either.
