The Top 10 Songs That Killed Hip-Hop

Hip-hop just may be the most popular music genre on the face of the planet and for good reason. It’s raw, real and unpredictable. But in recent years the music revolution that started in New York over 30-plus years ago has been dying a slow death. For some reason, wannabe hip-hop artists with little talent have decided to pervert the genre by manufacturing bubblegum garbage for the masses. If hip-hop isn’t dead yet, it is definitely in critical condition.

10. "In Da Club" - 50 Cent

50 Cent - In Da Club (Live)

I’ll be the first to admit that I thought this song was the jam when it first came out, but I’m sure I wasn’t the only fooled by this slick hip-hop businessman.

Now I'm not saying this song is bad, but when Fiddy first came on the mainstream pop scene in 2003 he pulled off one of the greater magic tricks in all of music. This man was creating the illusion that he was a real artist trying to speak for the streets, when lo and behold he was just a businessman who didn’t seem to care about the music he was attempting to represent. This success seemed to open the floodgates for a whole slew of cartoon-like hip-hop artists trying to make a buck off of Middle America.

9. "Me So Horny" - 2 Live Crew

2 Live Crew - Me So Horny

As funny as this song was in back in 1989, it was nothing more than shock-pop crap that had no place in the world of hip-hop. As Nasty As They Wanna Be was nothing more than a dirty Miami bass comedy record that featured samples of Rudy Ray Moore and Eddie Murphy getting ill on the mic.  I do love the fact that the lyrical content in their songs had conservatives like George Will shaking in his boots, but the only thing they really brought to the table were filthy raps and fat Florida asses.

8. "Ice Ice Baby" – Vanilla Ice

Vanilla Ice - Ice, Ice, Baby

I had no choice for this one. I feel like Vanilla was a pretty sincere dude when it came down to his music. The guy was spittin’ Miami raps, throwin’ down synchronized dance moves and just plain doin’ his thing.

But back in 1990, this song pretty much took on a life of its own and would go on to be one of the more hated songs in hip-hop history. It’s kinda sad that this man had no control of how people in the hip-hop community would react to the popularity of this record. I guess that’s what you get for trying to put out bunk s**t during the Public Enemy era.

7. "Too Legit To Quit"  - MC Hammer

MC Hammer: Too Legit To Quit

I can’t deny that “Addams Groove” was a worse song than “Too Legit,” but Hammer’s first single off his 1991 LP seemed to almost flush the entire hip-hop/rap scene down the crapper. The size and scope of “Too Legit” helped push Hammer even further away from his musical roots in Oakland and pretty much turned rap into a giant Pepsi ad. Even the video for the song is an over-the-top mess. At least the “U Can't Touch This” video was simple and had some hot girls dancing in spandex.

If it wasn’t for The Chronic, I don’t know what I would have done with myself.

6. "Gettin' Jiggy wit It" - Will Smith

I give Will Smith credit for making clean hip hop for the masses, but when Big Willie Style dropped in 1997 I had honestly had enough. It was like a hip-hop covers record from start to finish. "Just the Two of Us"? Fresh Prince, please.

Who ever made this list up is an idiot. Actually, I'll take that back because they did list Souljah Boy as number 1. So you're not an COMPLETE idiot, but you still have the RE-RE label. How the eff can you list something from 1989 and say it killed hiphop? Seriously who ever made this list should stay out of doing stuff like this. You are not qualified. Thank you.

I'm not big fan of Souja Boy but I understand where Kanye was coming from (not a big fan of his either.) Hip Hop as street culture has always been a juxtaposition of social commentary, braggadocio and new dance crazes. Since its inception - these three themes run concurrently. People who don't like "Chicken Noodle Soup" or "Superman" have never been to an urban ghetto and never stepped foot into a predominantly black dance club. The backpacker concept that hip hop is about cutting edge rhymes and intricate styles is probably the biggest coffin nail in rap ever. My list would include wankers like El-P and Acey Alone.

A good club track is a good club track... there's more than a few of them on here. 50 Cent may have half a mouth and rap like it, but the "In Da Club" beat is solid and the track sill rocks a party. "Superman" was a track of the moment (again hip hop has always had this - who does the PEE WEE or the smurf anymore?) Still, for that moment - that track would create such intensity on a dancefloor that it deserved all the attention it got. Black folk (and especially Southern black folk) grew up with line dances. People's mothers electric slide every time they go to a party. Hip Hop started out as dance music - and although subgenres have emerged in the near 40 years its been around, the party aspect of it is at the very core.

I am fascinated by local dance scenes... like Baltimore Breaks and Go-Go (which has existed in DC almost as long as hip hop - but for some reason never branched out - despite Spike Lee and EU's efforts in the late 80s.) Thus... the fact that MTV caught wind of Miami Bass about 10 years after - and "Me So Horny" blew up doesn not make it a throw away song. If anything, culturally "Mi So Horny" is really important. Due to Tipper Gore and the PMRC - this song managed to get rock legends and musicians otherwise uninterested in rap to support it and validate it as music.

whoever wrote this blog has very little intelligence, or knowledge about hip hop. I agree with number 10. 50 is a retard, his songs have no value with the exception of maybe Hate It or Love It. He is a business man, not a rapper. He brought us Eminem, The Game, and i guess Young Buck counts. In the club is catchy but they never should have released that shit and made the fool famous. I dont really agree with your views of loose yourself. Eminem still is a crazy motherfucker and releases stuff like "insane" on his new album. Jay-Z is a mad rapper, your an idiot. Big Pimpin is fresh, Notorious is a King no matter what song his lyrics have been place into. and Soulja boy isnt hip hop or rap. hes his own genre, and i dont think that he believes hes a good rapper, his shit is funny, and catchy. he makes hits for the club, hes being creative, dont hate.

You should remove Jay-Z and Eminem off this list. I agree with "Mo money mo problems" though.

Hip Hop is a joke in the first place. I'll never understand why these guys brag about shagging floozies that anybody with something swinging down the middle could get naked. Some of it could be considered music, but that list would be about 2 or 3 entries long.

This list would be better titled "The Top 10 Songs That Killed Hip Hop in the Opinion of an Outside Spectator Who Liked Kanye's Debut Album and Uses That Fact to Front Like He Knows Anything About Hip Hop"

And I know it's been covered, but 25 years? Really? Hip hop started in 1984? Rapper's Delight was released in 1979 and that was after years of hip hop being underground, just to give you an idea of how completely incorrect you are.

Saying "Big Pimpin" opened doors for shit rappers is like saying Nirvana sucks because they "opened the door" for Nickleback.

The only 2 reasonable songs on this list (one isn't even a song, it's a category of songs, so...really, bang-up job here) are #1 and #2, and they are completely obvious and something that even casual hip hop listeners know is hurting the genre...which is probably why you managed to get them right.

Go do a Top 10 wackiest PhotoShop list or something. At least you won't be offending anyone's sensibilities.

Seriously, how are you gonna put Jay and BIG on this list? "Big Pimpin" is BRILLIANT because of its pop success. Look at the lyrics and how over-the-top they were. They had no business being on the radio, yet the beat was so nuts that the radio had no choice but to play it.

    Dustin,

JERL here. I enjoyed the review, keep up the good work. I cant believe Kanye said that about Solja Girl. Being a true hip hop and underground hip hop fan, As soon as I hear a song or artist like Solja Boi I immediately change the station.

perhaps soulja boy did in fact expose the core mechanics of hip-hop... not turning it into a gimmick but just showing the world that hip-hop always was just a gimmick. Just a thought if anyone likes hip-hop. I have no problem with that, and I meant no harm nor insult.

25 years ago? Where the hell have you guys been? Hip Hop's first emcee was Coke La Rock back in 1973. There have been emcees and Rap groups since then. Hip Hop music/emceeing existed from 1972/3-1979 before the first records dropped. If the first Rap/Hip Hop record was in 1979 and the artform existed for more than 5 years previously then where the hell did you guys get 25 years from? Here's my theory:

Someone who doesn't know a damn thing about Rap or Hip Hop culture wrote this ignorant blog thinking that it was cute. In reality, there is an entire community of Hip Hop writers and journalists that see this as a slap in the face and a mockery of the culture. At least use the Google bar and do some fact checking first before you post crap like this. Or better yet, send an e-mail to someone who knows about this stuff first!

    One.
