Terrence Howard Dumped Without Reason

Nobody likes getting dumped. It really sucks. It's one of those things you just kind of have to hope you learn something from in the long run, and chalk it up to a character-building experience. But when Terrence Howard got dumped from Iron Man 2 last week, he wasn't even given the benefit of the doubt of knowing why: after the whole "he wanted more money" rumors, Howard has spoken out and said that he was given no reason whatsover for the termination of his contract.

Howard spoke with NPR about his getting dumped from the next Iron Man:

It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. [The contract] just ... up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up.

This kind of changes the news about Don Cheadle taking on the part of Rhodes, and him being the man to don the War Machine outfit. Cheadle is still an excellent replacement, but now it feels like the substitution lacks a fundamental element: justice.

There is justice, but not for Howard, who was treated poorly by the studio. The justice is for viewers, who will now have an exciting actor playing a major role next to Downey Jr. instead of a simply pretty one. My guess is that after the studio realized how important Downey Jr.'s performance was to the movie's success, they wanted someone who could really step up to play Rhodes. Whatever his charms, Howard is clearly no match for either Cheadle or Downey Jr.

Sorry, don't see Cheadle in the role...He just doesn't give me the 'ex-marine security guy' vibe that you need for Rhodes. Cheadle is a better actor. But don't think this is good for him.

He doesn't have a vibe that I'd recognize as "ex-marine security guy" (not that it matters, but I think Rhodes is USAF) but Cheadle is a good enough actor that he could *play* that. But so anyway, whom would you pick?

For his persona, Terrence Howard is a brillant actor and I for one will miss him in IRON MAN 2. What ever problems there were they both should have worked them out because as we all know, except for James Bond 007 a 40 year franchise, nothing kills a sequel series faster than changing actors in the middle of it. No disrespect to Mr. Cheadle. He is a great actor as well, as evident in the OCEANS 11/12/13 sequeals. Catch my drift?

I am catching your drift. Yeah, Cheadle was embarrassing in the Ocean's movies, but he's been great in Traffic, Boogie Nights, Out of Sight, Hotel Rwanda, Talk to Me, etc. Howard doesn't have anything on that. No matter what, I think the literally dozens of people who would go to Iron Man 2 exclusively for Howard will be somewhat outnumbered by those whose interest is even more piqued by Cheadle taking over the role.
