Spike TV Brings Rugby To America

Balls out! Rugby League is coming to America and Spike TV is going to be its new home. The network today announced that it would be bringing Australia's National Rugby League 2009 playoffs to the States.

The action starts Friday, September 11 at 11pm, so now's your chance to figure out the meaning of terms like dummy kick, ruck and scrum, and finally impress that hot(ish) Amazon chick that plays on the Rugby club who may or may not be in to three-ways.

The NRL is Australia's premier rugby league and routinely attracts 80,000 fans to its Grand Final (their Super Bowl), which will be broadcast on Spike October 4 at 11am ET/PT. This may be their version of football, but there are no pansy pads or stop and go bulls***. This is hurry-up the whole way through, so move over T.O. There's no crying in Rugby!

C'mon, mate, Get More Action.

The broadcast schedule is as follows:

Friday, September 11 (11:00pm ET/PT)
Friday, September 18 (11:00pm ET/PT)
Friday, September 25 (11:00pm ET/PT)

Grand Final (note - will air in the morning in the U.S.):
Sunday, October 4 (11:00am ET/PT)

For more details on Rugby League in America, head to amnrl.com.

FINALLY!!! Thank you Spike TV for showing us a real man's sport. I'm tired of watching guys get $10 million to run 20 yards, fall down when the opponent touches them (wearing more body armor than an Army Ranger) and stagger to the sideline to suck on the oxygen tank. 9 seconds of action followed by 7 minutes of high fives, butt grabs, replays from every conceivable angle and commercials.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Spike for the NRL playoff games.

I am a born and bred American from Tennessee in the heart of football country. I became a big fan of Rugby League after working with an Australian from Sydney who introduced me to the game. I know there are millions of potential Rugby League fans in the US who would fall in love with the game if it were broadcast on TV on a regular basis.

PLEASE give us an NRL Game of the Week throughout next year's 2010 season. Even better would be to broadcast multiple games every weekend but I would be thrilled with even one game per weekend.

If anyone is interested, in my opinion, the best way to get League to the States is to promote it in the high schools. The infrastructure isn't there right now for either code because neither code works on an American football field (field is too narrow, goes with yards instead of meters, schools won't draw up lines for football, soccer, and rugby on the same field), so any effort could get relegated to park fields where the sport is a "red-headed stepchild" and not taken seriously.

I am working on an 11-on-11 version of League called "gridiron rugby" so that it would fit on American football fields and use American football field markings mainly, and therefore altered some rules to make it work. For internationals, I still support 13-a-side, but realities are realities and this is a way to get football fans to support League as a spring sport in schools, to get some football players playing year-round. (IF they ever get that pro league in America going they HAVE to have a plan to get the game to our kids or it WILL flame out.)

Visit www.gridironrugby.com for more details. Thanks.

Spike SHOULD get NRL all season next year. Sooner they announce it the better. Yes, we do need a pro league here but the U.S. effort is floundering ( www.nrlus.com ) As to the comment about high schoolers in the States being confused, who are you kidding? I got evidence it is recognized as a varsity sport in TWO states (California and Vermont) with around 1,000 players, boys and girls. Union's had it's chance. I went to the U.S./Canada game on July 4th in Charleston. If I wasn't for the USA I would have been bored it had ZERO tries.

Spike having this is potentially BETTER than Setanta since Setanta doesn't do HD. Let's not forget that.

it's brutal, intense and the smartest thing spike has done this year... the UFC has similar qualities, but the various MMA shows have waaay too much chatter/review/analysis... i want more; i want it now; and i want it faster! rugby is the answer... woot!

    some pretty good comments raised!

i grew up on rugby league and can remember watching games on the weekend with my dad when i was around 6 or 7 years old, and it wasn't the national rugby league at that time. i am now 39. even when i left home and was still in australia, i would go to my dads most weekends to watch it with him.

i am an aussie living in the usa for 8 years. my wife used to work for direct tv so we had all channels for free including the soccer channel who broadcat the rugby league through skysport aus. she no longer works there.

now i see none as i don't get all channels so i miss it. i love this game.

i wish to thank spike tv for broadcasting the rugby league finals every friday evening. i love it.

i, too, am wondering if spike could carry the games for the 2010 rugby league season as i am starved of the game.

my team is the brisbane broncos. i have followed them since they entered the competition in 1988. go broncos!

please spike tv, could you see whet could be done so i could watch my favorite game and it would also introduce the game to a whole new audience and boost your ratings too!

Thanks a lot spike! Though please, please consider showning some union games . . . like tri-nations or 6 nations rugby, or the super 14, or even international. There are a lot of american viewers (and especially viewers in other countries) who enjoy seeing possession of the ball contested in line-outs, mauls, rucks and scrums.

Awesome Spike, I love you guys!!!! More Rugby needed, maybe even the League Word Cup when it comes around. I'm not going to put down Rugby Union, I think thay are both fantastic games and if Setanta loses Union, it would be great if Spike could grab it. And if I'm going to make out a wish list, how about some Aussie Rules Football as well???? No one-eyed comments please. They are all great games played by very fit and tough men. They all should be on Spike.

I think Spike just picked up another 100,000 viewers this week as anyone who watches Rugby (played in over 180 countries at last count) as well as the League-lovers spread the word. I grew up playing both codes so forget all the 'which is better' nonsense. You have to be fit and skilled to play both. I have to agree with others though about League's appeal; every time I show an American mate video of a League game their eyes fall out and they say "where can I get more of this!"

Would be great if there were more games but what the heck, this is fantastic news for all the Aussie expats that live in the States.

Now point to note, this is labelled as the toughest game in the world, what you people need to do is check out Rugby League footage from the 70's and 80's WOW!!! Big hits, look for guys Les Boyd, Ziggy Niscott, Mortemore Brothers and the list goes on.

    Enjoy

I hope that you get the whole season next year and there are plenty of us Aussies that will watch it but Americans will jump at it once they see the contact involved. Can't wait to watch some footy on TV instead of my computer with poor quality. Go the mighty Dragons.

Agreed heartily - wel ldone spike it's about time we see a NRL till now you've had to live on the US East coast or have one of thise niche Fox sports channels to to see it- and even then you were lucky....I would hope SPIKE would look at this with a view to maybe doing an NRL game of the week next year for the 2010 comp - the NRL in OZ has talked for some time about bringing the game into the and expanding the game....now is it!

Why do Union fans continue to think they outnumber leagure fans....you get a dozen or so games a year, plau a handfull of rep games and a wolrd cup. Leagure gets near thirty games , with rep and Stae of Origin which is the best sporting event going around- whatever code.

sorry Union is for fools. Not even the TV stations in Austrlalia support it anymore.

I love a game where the main action is an argument between the fans about a call the ref made!

I like Union, I have grown to apprecaiet Auusie rules- but league will always be the game for me ...

Love this conversation...I played both rugby's - Union on Saturdays and League on Sundays - up to 17 yrs of age - then went totally Union. Love Union way much more but...there is nothing like the NRL finals for pure brutality - except of course for the STATE OF ORIGIN (have to say that loud) . So Spike...show the NRL finals, get the STATE OF ORIGIN and then get either the the Super 14, or European Cup Rugby...and you will have a couple of million ex-pats from Aussie, Kiwi Land, Bokkie Bokkie, Pommy Place, and Western Europe watching your channel.

Rugby League is the greatest game of all.No helmets,no paddings, constant play, hard hits, lots of trys, and people will be glued to their TV sets once they see the the toughness of our great game.I was fortunate enough of watching all football codes in Australia, but nothing i tell you nothing will ever come close to Rugby League..

What a win for SPIKE.... Rugby League is a fabulous game to watch and support, much more to superior than Rugby Union. The only reasonable level of Rugby Union is the Super 14.

SPIKE you done yourself a favor to scoop this coverage of the greatest game of all. Hopefully you can get the premiership games next season, plus rep games especially the "State of Origin " series.

I was devastated to say the least, now I am over the moon and getting my bigscreen & esky ready. Just need some XXXX & pies and everything will be perfect.
