Spike TV Brings Rugby To America

Balls out! Rugby League is coming to America and Spike TV is going to be its new home. The network today announced that it would be bringing Australia's National Rugby League 2009 playoffs to the States.

The action starts Friday, September 11 at 11pm, so now's your chance to figure out the meaning of terms like dummy kick, ruck and scrum, and finally impress that hot(ish) Amazon chick that plays on the Rugby club who may or may not be in to three-ways.

The NRL is Australia's premier rugby league and routinely attracts 80,000 fans to its Grand Final (their Super Bowl), which will be broadcast on Spike October 4 at 11am ET/PT. This may be their version of football, but there are no pansy pads or stop and go bulls***. This is hurry-up the whole way through, so move over T.O. There's no crying in Rugby!

C'mon, mate, Get More Action.

The broadcast schedule is as follows:

Friday, September 11 (11:00pm ET/PT)
Friday, September 18 (11:00pm ET/PT)
Friday, September 25 (11:00pm ET/PT)

Grand Final (note - will air in the morning in the U.S.):
Sunday, October 4 (11:00am ET/PT)

For more details on Rugby League in America, head to amnrl.com.

Congratulations Spike for this announcement. There are thousands of Rugby League fans here in the US and even though our US competition (www.amnrl.com) is great, the NRL is the premier competition in the world. For those fellow Americans who are unfamiliar with Rugby League think of it as full contact football but with no pads, helmets and timeouts. Truly a tough man's game and far more interesting to watch than Rugby Union (often referred to as "Rugby" here in the US).

Thanks again Spike, You have a new first-time viewer to your station and I'll bring planty with me.

What!Rugby Union is so very boring, you should read the write ups on it in OZ some day,Ruggerone its not union its Rugby League which is a faster more open game with players that can tackle, dont stand around looking lost when there's a stoppage, which in Union is a regular occurrence, and why go to a union match to watch the ref.
And in Rugby League they score trys unlike Union where they kick penalty goals, trys are something that they forgot about.

Didn't mean to start a cross code discussion - both Rugby's are great and thanks to Spike for putting games on. Let's hope that they show regular NRL games next year including State of origin.

Rugby league is a much faster (less stoppages) and much tougher game (more heavy collisions, especially in the forwards) than rugby union. Its rules are simpler than those of rugby union, so newcomers to the sport (like most US viewers I imagine) can pick it up much more quickly. Australians have a choice between four codes of football, and it is a close struggle between Australian Rules (AFL) and rugby league (NRL). Rugby union runs a poor third, in terms of club attendances, and television viewership. In the UK when you compare the professional Super League (rugby league) with the national Guiness Premiership (rugby union) you find that the Super League has a much stronger viewership on the Sky satellite network (which shows both) than the Guiness rugby union competition.

I love Union more that league but this is America and I am simply grateful that any rugby will be on TV. A1 news - thanks Spike.

Also in general I think League is a better game for Americans, it is like a fast passed version of NFL.

Maybe spike should play the 3rd state of origin game from this season as a lead in game to the semis if they have the rights. An absolute cracker of a game complete with a couple of fights. Americans would love the brutal physicality without the padding and helmets. LEAGUE LEAVES UNION FOR DEAD. All union's kicking, rules, stopages and tryless games are a joke.

Enjoy it America, it's the premier sport on the east coast of Australia. It's the worlds premier rugby league competition. We are the worlds premier rugby league nation.

This is awesome stuff. I love rugby league. Union is a real bore. Just ask Wendel Sailor, Lote Tuiqiri, Timana Tahu and every other player that switched codes. They all say in interviews that league is much tougher, quicker and more intense and Union is just something to play when you're past your prime. Dell said on NRL on Fox just a couple of days ago that he never had to ice after a game of union.

Union is heaps more tougher than League. How can League call itself a man's game when they don't even push in the scrums! Even womens rugby has more powerful scrums! League is the worst game in the world! That's why it's only played in Sydney & Brisbane. Again League is piggy-backing on the name of Rugby Union, playing itself off as Union and tricking people into thinking its the real rugby when its not. If League was so great how come it's not in the Olympics??? The 'play the ball' in League is the biggest cop-out in sport, as you just take a tackle, get up and put the ball between your legs! LEAGUE IS BORING!!!

If spike was smart they would continue to make a push and help start a pro league here in the USA. Guys bash each other for free here. I could not imagine if they got to train and got paid. This could be the next UFC craze. Play the games opposite of the NFL and marget to that fan base.

Add to this the impressive skills and total physical commitment of these modern day gladiators I am sure SPIKE viewers will be desperate for more.....

What a win for SPIKE.... Rugby League is a fabulous game to watch and support, much more to superior than Rugby Union. The only reasonable level of Rugby Union is the Super 14.

SPIKE you done yourself a favor to scoop this coverage of the greatest game of all. Hopefully you can get the premiership games next season, plus rep games especially the "State of Origin " series.

Rugby League is the greatest game of all.No helmets,no paddings, constant play, hard hits, lots of trys, and people will be glued to their TV sets once they see the the toughness of our great game.I was fortunate enough of watching all football codes in Australia, but nothing i tell you nothing will ever come close to Rugby League..

Americans are going to love it,bring it on baby I'm so excited about spikes involvement in Rugby League!

Love this conversation...I played both rugby's - Union on Saturdays and League on Sundays - up to 17 yrs of age - then went totally Union. Love Union way much more but...there is nothing like the NRL finals for pure brutality - except of course for the STATE OF ORIGIN (have to say that loud) . So Spike...show the NRL finals, get the STATE OF ORIGIN and then get either the the Super 14, or European Cup Rugby...and you will have a couple of million ex-pats from Aussie, Kiwi Land, Bokkie Bokkie, Pommy Place, and Western Europe watching your channel.

Why do Union fans continue to think they outnumber leagure fans....you get a dozen or so games a year, plau a handfull of rep games and a wolrd cup. Leagure gets near thirty games , with rep and Stae of Origin which is the best sporting event going around- whatever code.

sorry Union is for fools. Not even the TV stations in Austrlalia support it anymore.

I love a game where the main action is an argument between the fans about a call the ref made!

I like Union, I have grown to apprecaiet Auusie rules- but league will always be the game for me ...

Agreed heartily - wel ldone spike it's about time we see a NRL till now you've had to live on the US East coast or have one of thise niche Fox sports channels to to see it- and even then you were lucky....I would hope SPIKE would look at this with a view to maybe doing an NRL game of the week next year for the 2010 comp - the NRL in OZ has talked for some time about bringing the game into the and expanding the game....now is it!

I think Spike just picked up another 100,000 viewers this week as anyone who watches Rugby (played in over 180 countries at last count) as well as the League-lovers spread the word. I grew up playing both codes so forget all the 'which is better' nonsense. You have to be fit and skilled to play both. I have to agree with others though about League's appeal; every time I show an American mate video of a League game their eyes fall out and they say "where can I get more of this!"
