The Seven Biggest Loopholes in Terminator Salvation

People who have never seen any of the Terminator movies will probably have a lot of fun watching Terminator: Salvation. Because, let’s be honest, it’s a fun movie with great visuals and (just barely) enough action to keep us on a post-apocalyptic thrill ride. But hard core Terminator fans won’t be able to avoid the fact that there are more holes in this movie than a hunk of Swiss cheese. Spoiler alert!

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures

7. The Terminators aren’t good at terminating people.

image

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures

Why is it that every time a Terminator gets its hands on someone (especially John Connor), it gives him or her a hundred chances to escape, fight back or just not die in general? It seems as if the first course of action for an unarmed Terminator would be to snap, strangle, or crush whatever it gets its hands on.

Instead they use the ol’ toss-‘em-till-they-die routine which, if the movie is any indication, has a very low percentage of success. Maybe the machines get smarter in the future, because it doesn’t take Arnold’s T-800 very long to kill people when he gets down to business. I can’t remember a single Terminator from Salvation successfully taking out a human with its bare hands.

Oh, yeah -- and why can’t any of these killing machines aim better than a little league pitcher? With Terminators this incompetent it seems like the resistance could’ve just sent an email with a virus to Skynet and ended the war years ago.

6. John Connor communicates via FM radio.

image

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures

Most humans who’ve survived Judgment Day are clever enough to live underground, inside crumbled buildings, and pretty much live like quiet little hermits. The machines have become so pervasive that the drop of a pin brings them to your neighborhood.

So why does John Connor use FM radio as his way of communicating with the rest of the world? Does Skynet just really, really hate top 40 radio? They’re able to hone in on just about every other noise or movement humans make, but they’re unable to track or jam up FM radio? Seems like it’d be pretty easy to find where humans were hiding out by simply tracking every place FM radio signals were being received -- or, if nothing else, the place from which they were being sent  (i.e., John Connor’s base). I guess that’s a little too advanced for machines that send flesh-covered robots back in time.

5. Marcus Wright is given free will and thus programmed to side with the humans.

image

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures

Somehow Marcus is able to find Kyle Reese in a desolate, war-ravaged Los Angeles inhabited by no more than, apparently, two humans. But he finds him. Unfortunately for the machines, they were clever enough to put together a contraption good enough to fool people into thinking he was human, but they weren’t clever enough to make him fulfill his purpose: to kill humans!

Why would Skynet program Marcus to have free will – or, worse yet, side with the humans? To infiltrate the resistance and bring Reese and John Connor to Skynet, right, I get that. But why? So that Skynet can do a little victory dance in front of their faces before terminating them? Because if Skynet is in the business of killing humans -- Reese and Connor more specifically -- then it seems like they might have saved a lot of steps if they’d just programmed Marcus to kill humans!

Furthermore, if Marcus gave his body to Skynet in 2003, then how is it even possible Skynet could have premeditated the conversion of his mind/soul/whatever into a resistance infiltrator? And why is he recognized by Skynet as a friendly machine, but earlier in the movie other Terminators don’t recognize him and actively try to kill him (but are unable to, due to their terrible aim)?

The main character of Salvation is one of its biggest loopholes.

This is a very insightful, well written article! You should send this to James Cameron. It's amazing that after so many millions of dollars spent, and so many people working on the movie, they decide to make this movie about the future run by machines, which in this case want to make believable with all the special effects, appear so dumb in its execution. How come the terminators, made with metal, and strong enough to crush anything, be so dumb as to take humans, and instead of killing them right then, decide to use them as practice soccer balls. It is understandable that traditionally, movies are meant to play with your hopes, and the traditional trick of talking to much, wasting time, long enough for the protagonist to escape, is overly abused in this flick. Especially since it is a war movie. I mean, imagine a war movie where the enemy is so clumsy that every shot they fire don't kill anyone. Caramba!

First arnould was the original very first made t-800 that why there was only one attacking connor. they were still making the other ones in the facility, The resistence got in the base so easily because skynet wanted them tocome in. Skynet did not know about connor knowing that the t-800 had a nuclear power core, because they have not invented time travel yet, and skynet has no idea that they will send robots back in time to kill john and his mother which actually teaches him alot about the machines. because they do not have time travel tech yet. the radio, heart transplant, are actual holes though but the t-800 fight, resistance attack are not. The t -800 could have been made with a stringer metal too so the liquid metal would have not destroyed it but would make it easier for marcus to rip his head off. As for marcus haveing human emotion in the movie they said he still had half of a human brain, which probly was his human elements like emotion and memory, and the robot half did motor control (moving / functioning his body) they also gave him free will because they predicted that, that was the only way that marcus could be able to infultrate the resistence. lastly marcus was not made to kill people but just to send secret transmisions back to skynet. o and about how the robots kill you with there bare hads they improve on them when they make those liquid ones t-1000 or t-1100 i forggot what they were call but they do alot better in hand to hand combat

Nonsense. If Skynet didn't know they were going to send robots back in time then they should not understand the significance of Kyle Reese. Logically, they shouldn't care about Kyle Reese at all. The fact that they do is either another loophole or proof of the fact that Skynet knows what happens in the future.

Good Point! How did they know Kyle Reese was important to the resistance? if they didn't know about time travel!

And another thing, I know in every terminator movie they recycle scenes, but the last fight scenes in this one could have been more imaginative. the liquid metal pouring on the terminator! Hello?! and the one where Connor is shooting the terminator while he is advancing slowly to kill him (Sarah Connor fighting the T-1000). Did anyone notice that?

and as soon as i realized theres only one security bot patroling the whole place, i lost hope.

Guys! That' just tell you that either the creators of this flick are all idiots, or that they think that we are. One of the two. I am hoping for the first.

sequels normally find ways to ruin solid originals, and the original had some flaws too. the industry is not about telling a story but about getting your money.

why do the machines need to corral survivors into concentration camps? machines are immune to biological disease. they can't smell rotting flesh. they have no more emotional attachment to the sight of a childs lifeless body that to that of a rock. if skynet wanted humanities infractructure intact it wouldn't have used nuclear weapons, but biological and chemical weapons would have netted the same results without the destruction.

There were many problems with the Seawolf submarine also. (1) Seawolf cruising at depth pinging active sonar like a World War II U-boat -- not done in modern submarines even when seeking another close aboard sub because it gives away the Seawolf's position; (2) Seawolf at periscope depth although just shown to be about ten shiplengths under the waves (or essentially test depth); (3) Seawolf control room with a concave overhead -- Seawolf's control room is on the middle level, so the overhead would be flat, and it's a lot bigger -- the movie used an old WW2 boat to film in and it shows; (4) old fashioned optical periscope with mirrors used when modern scopes use fiber optics with thick pedestals; (5) Hunter-killer approached the sub and seemed to know where it was by tracking a radio signal that was not emitted by the sub itself, which is not possible; (6) hunter-killer just happened to have an antisubmarine weapon - a hypersonic velocity underwater solid rocket fueled missile by the speed of it -- that just seemed to know the exact location of the sub which is not possible from a 600 mph approach of the weapon delivery platform.

You'd think that spending 100 million or 200 million would allow a thousand dollar budget for a Navy technical advisor.

    Nah.

Get over it! It's FICTION. You shouldn't knit pick a movie for its realism or lack thereof. Just enjoy the film and stop whining.

I read an article a few days ago on the molten steel not destroying the T-800. McG said something about not all molten steel would melt a terminator. It depends on what elements were mixed to make the molten steel. when i read that i thought that was a bunch of crap. i really thought McG would do a lot better than Mostow when he did T3. Salvation is better but not what i expected. There are two more films left. I wonder if McG is gonna do them

I think a good amount of the loop-holes are due to the fact that the movie was cut down in running time. It was never explained how Skynet had the technology to create the T800's 10 years prior to when they would actually go online. It is assumed that Skynet got there hands on some juicy intel probably from the past (sending Terminators back in time that inevitably get junked?? I think we seen what happens when Terminator parts get left behind...). If we take into account the WORST Terminator film, T3, the TX had the means to communicate with Skynet and was able to upload tons of intel from the future, ie T800 blueprints and who the main enemy was and how to eradicate him. It's a shame the film was shortened so much and didn't take time explain some of these things (as was promised in some of the trailers.. but never shown in the movies?? wtf WB??). I hope the McG and the WB hear what the fans have to say and take into account they can't cut corners...

    ooo, theres another one!

molten iron killed the real Arnold in T1/ 2, if this Salvation movie happened before Arnold time-travelled back in time, how come the supposedly outdated version of T800 in Salvation survives the molten iron?

okay, i havent seen the film yet... and yes, i know i should nt have read the article..

.but its too late for that now.

here are some possible explanations for some of the plot holes. skynet knowing about kyle reese might not be that they KNOW they will invent time travel but rather that they have strong suspitions due to the fact that a man named kyle reese was taken into custody in 1984 and had spoke about skynet and terminators coming back in time. reeses 1984 statement would have been logged in several police and pyschology report files that im sure skynet could have easily read as it was connected to every computer in the world. so when they learnt there was a man named kyle reese in the ressistance they would have twigged!

also, molten metal would only melt a terminator if they were emmersed in it, like i said i havent seen the scene but just poring molten metal on a terminator may not destroy it.

also, a terminator being a bit crap at killing people is evident in all three movies: in T1 the t-800 takes a fair bit of time to kill sarahs flatmates boyfriend, continuley just throwing him around when he could have just ripped his throat out and in T2 arnie takes to throwing the bikies in the pub around rather than just ending there lives like a ninja. in t3...well, lets forget that movie ever happened....

oh... and as for it being piss easy to get into the sknet hq, it seems to me that we underestimated how limited sky net actually is. skynet is not really aware of what life is or what humans are capable of, it doesnt understand sacrafice or passion and thus underestimates the ressitance. foolish but possible, i prefer to force myself into beliveing these things rather than hating the movie. suspend that dis-belief!

a few points seeing as my long post didnt save which would have explained everything in more detail.

FM radios have a signal radius believe it or not. The molten metal was cooled when conner shot the sprinkler to harden it stop the advancing T-800. not many people in the previous films died at the hands of the T-800, they were usually shot. Conner said the power cells were enough to flatten the factory not anything more than that, so the helicopter was far enough away. skynet wasnt easy to get into its just that marcus shut down all the bots and gun turrets, whatch the graphics when marcus plugs himself into the grid it says "unarmed". marcus was given freewill as skynet wanted him to find out what he was and seek retribution thus leading conner to them.

i think this film is a lot tighter than people are giving it credit for, some of the character arcs were not fulfilled but neither were they after seeing fellowship of the ring. i think its a good start to the new trilogy and more will be explained in later movies, so stop all this whining watch it properly before making silly comments and realise it is only a film which in my opinion was very entertaining

oh yeah and i missed another point. the cpu in marcus is the same as in the T-600 at the base of the neck. well this makes perfect sense as this is upgraded in the T-800 into the middle of the skull as seen in T2, as skynet realises this to be a weak point in the design of its earlier models

i really dont know how this can be a plothole in a million years. and suggesting marcus might sleep funny on it is just heading into the relm of writing rubbish just for the sake of it.

i mean what next marcus should'nt have been able to swim straight with a hole in his hand.....come on now give me a break!!!!

If you send terminators back through time you change the course of history. You create points in time where stuff happens without explanation and has evidence to prove it. Remember the 1st terminator left behind an arm and a chip that was in tact.. This was then taken and R&D and researched via skynet and shot the technology forward. All of everything that happens is recorded so sarah and kyle and there testimonies would have been recorded. so there is evidence there to sugest to Skynet that these people have interfered from the beginning.

I share the above 2 explanations but I also touch on Marcus being invented as a way to prolong the cancer patients life. The girl who used him and got him out of jail. He may have then been recycled into a perfect hybrid infiltrator.
