After the much maligned Spider-Man 3, Sam Raimi has started talking about why it wasn't the film he'd hoped to make, as well as Spider-Man 4, in the newest issue of Empire. He also gives us the skinny on the villains we might see in the next sequel. As for the casting of Kirsten Dunst, well, you'll just have to hit the jump.
Raimi talked a bit about why he felt Spider-Man 3 wasn't as successful as he'd hoped:
They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually. But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.
But he insists that things will be different in Spider-Man 4, and that he's going to regain the creative control he lost in the third film:
The best way for me to move forward on films, I realize…and this was a lesson I had to learn for myself…is that I’ve gotta be the singular voice that makes the creative choices on the film.
Let's just hope that we get his singular voice in the next movie. It seems he wasn't terribly keen on using Venom in the third, which might explain why that character was one of the weakest in the movie. It kind of sucks that Venom is now all used up in the Spider-Man movie franchise, though it sounds like we have some new villains to look forward to.
At this point Raimi is considering Morbius and The Lizard, which could be a pretty cool change of pace for ol' Spidey. But will Kirsten Dunst be part of the fourth film? ScreenRant.com says, "We also know that Raimi really wants Kirsten Dunst back as Mary Jane but no deal has been made on that front as of yet."
There are a lot of Spider-Man fans out there who will not shed tears if Dunst doesn't sign up for parts 4 and 5. Any redheads you'd like to see substitue in the next Spider-Man films?
