You may be familiar with the infamous Gumball 3000 cross-country rally, with its ultra-exotic cars racing across large expanses of blacktop at high speeds, followed by nights of unmitigated debauchery at exclusive underground parties. Sounds pretty good, eh?
Well the only problem with the Gumball is that, in order to enter, you typically need to be extremely rich. Not only do most Gumballers own something along the lines of a Ferrari F430, they also have no qualms about destroying it in the process of the rally – which happens, often.
So what’s a wage slave to do? You enter the Rental Car Rally!
The Rental Car Ralley is a 36-hour, New York to Montreal (and back) race where entrants can only use cars acquired from the likes of Hertz, Avis, Zipcar and Enterprise - unless they have something awesome. The other caveat is that you’re only allowed to use backroads the entire way, so no flatout runs at 120mph on the interstate this time.
The race starts August 15th at the stroke of midnight at the Water Taxi Beach parking lot, where drivers and their crews will haul ass from New York to a series of timed checkpoints along the way.
The teams will then race back to NYC starting 8am Sunday the 17th. The race concludes back at Water Taxi Beach, with cash prizes, various sponsor giveaways, and trophies made from gold-schlacked vintage gas pump handles for best team style. Better secure that Hertz Shelby, quick!
