Porn stars are complaining about work and are apparently looking for a little more conversation and a little less action.
Most people watch porn for, well, the porn. They definitely don’t watch it for the plot or acting. Recently, the porn industry began focusing less and less on these two elements, upsetting many performers who liked to sink their teeth into a meaty role and juicy story.
One such performer, Savanna Samson, once appreciated preparing for a role and getting into character. She told the New York Times, “I couldn’t wait to get my next script.” These days she doesn’t even bother looking at the scripts. There’s no reason anymore, the scripts contain little or no dialogue and are primarily concerned with action.
The change in pornography is primarily a result of declining DVD sales and a rise in web consumption of porn. Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment, says, “On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes. We have to cater to that.” Three years ago pornography studio Vivid Entertainment used to make nearly 60 feature-length films with story lines, today they mostly make films which are a string of sex scenes or “vignettes.” Porn companies, like Vivid, also have to compete with amateur sex videos which pay no attention to lighting, costumes, or plot.
Samson is not happy about the changes. She misses the days when she took her acting seriously, like she did for her role in the 2006 film Flasher. In it she portrayed a psychotic woman who “had an obsession with flashing and doing things in public.” Now all she performs is sex. “I used to have dialogue,” says Ms. Samson. “Getting it on in one hardcore scene after another just isn’t as much fun.” Most fans would disagree.
