Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch "Hopeful" He Has Beaten Cancer

In an email update to the Beastie Boys' official fan list after returning from a visit to Tibetan doctors in Dharamsala, India, Adam Yauch said that he is feeling "healthy, strong, and hopeful" that he has beaten cancer. Yauch traveled to India shortly after undergoing surgery in late July to remove a cancerous tumor from his left parotid gland. "I'm taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors I've been eating a vegan/organic diet," says Yauch in the message. "I'm feeling healthy, strong, and hopeful that I've beaten this thing, but of course time will tell." Heal well, Mr. Yauch. [MTV]

Blondes Take Longer to Look Good

A new survey reveals that blonde-headed women take longer than brunettes to get ready and dolled-up for the day. The average blonde spends a whopping 72 minutes every day “choosing clothes, showering, and doing their hair and make-up.” By comparison brunettes spend 66 minutes a day, which is still a lot.  The survey of 3,000 women found that every day the average blonde showers for 16 minutes, brushes their teeth for eight minutes, fixes their hair for 14 minutes, and takes 11 minutes to apply their make-up. Phewww! No wonder blondes have more fun…they deserve it. [The Sun]

Venom Has a Director

The Venom movie in the works has an official writer and director: Gary Ross. Remember him? He brought us Seabiscuit and Pleasantville. So, he’s going from race horses to symbiotic, shape-shifting alien suits… Yeah, he’s perfect for the project. Whether or not Topher Grace is going to reprise the role of Eddie Brock, the man who permanently hosts Venom (both of whom were disintegrated at the end of Spider-Man 3), is not known. Let’s just keep in mind that Ross also wrote Spider-Man 4. It seems Columbia deemed his work on that film good enough to give him the Venom franchise, or at least let him get it started. There’s some hope for this movie yet. [Heat Vision Blog]

Henry Selick No Likey Laika

Director Henry Selick, probably the world’s most famous stop-motion animator – he directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and most recently Coraline – is having a hand in dismantling the house he helped build. Laika, an animation studio in Portland, Oregon that was originally Will Vinton Studios before it was bought up by Nike founder Phil Knight in 2003, is losing its most high-profile director only five years after joining the studio. There aren’t a lot of details about the falling out, except to say that Selick became impatient with the progress of Laika’s next feature project. The studio recently cut its entire computer animation department, some 63 jobs, in addition to 65 others who were laid off after the CG movie Jack and Ben’s Animated Adventure was shut down. So what’s next for Selick and Laika? Well, Selick will probably find the doors wide open at every studio, from Pixar to Dreamworks. We’ll just have to see if Laika can survive without its genius-in-residence.[Oregon]

Flirting with Hot Chicks is Good for Your Health

Looking to avoid the doctor and increase your chances with the ladies? It turns out you can do both at the same time. A new study conducted by researchers at the University of California has concluded that flirting with attractive members of the fairer sex boosts testosterone levels on an average of a whopping 48 percent. And since that leads to an overall feeling of alertness and well-being, that's just one more reason to try your hand in the field. So what're you waiting for? [Just A Guy Thing]

In a ploy to boost ratings, Heroes hottie Hayden Panettiere is set to lock lips with a woman on the next episode of the flagging NBC show. In the hopes of turning things around the network has released a photograph the of the steamy Sapphic kiss. The photo shows Hayden’s character Claire Bennet locking lips with roommate Gretchen, who is played by Californication’s babe Madeline Zima. It might just be time to tune into Heroes again. NHL Hall of Famer's Son Gets Stern Warning For Assault Charges

Jonathan Roy (son of Patrick Roy - the greatest goalie of all-time) has pleaded guilty to an assault charge for savagely attacking another player during a junior hockey game last year in Quebec. Roy, whose father made tens of millions of dollars, generously donated $5,000 to charity and promised never to do it again. [Yahoo!]

Artist Forbidden to Stream His Own Music on MySpace

Scottish artist Edwyn Collins wanted to stream one of his own songs on MySpace, but it seems that copyright misunderstandings make him unable to do so. Management for the former Orange Juice frontman have been unable to convince the website that they own the rights to "A Girl Like You," despite the fact that they, er, do. Collins said, "I found a nice lawyer guy at Warners, very apologetic, promised to get it sorted, but all these months later it isn't." His wife added, 'MySpace are not equipped to deal with the notion that anyone other than a major label can claim a copyright." [Guardian]

Convinced Cyber Criminal Left in Charge of Prison Computer Network

A 27-year-old man serving six years for stealing £6.5million using forged credit cards over the internet was recruited to help write code needed for the installation of an internal prison TV station. He was left unguarded with unfettered access to the system and produced results that anyone but prison officials could have guessed. He installed a series of passwords on all the machines, shutting down the entire prison computer system. A prison source said, "It's unbelievable that a criminal convicted of cyber-crime was allowed uncontrolled access to the hard drive. He set up such an elaborate array of passwords it took a specialist company to get it working." The hard drive, huh? Looks like somebody needs to call the Geek Squad. [Mirror]
